Switching To An Air Fryer May Aid In Weight Loss

Deep-fried foods arent just higher in fat, but theyre also higher in calories and may contribute to weight gain.

One study of 33,542 Spanish adults found that a higher intake of fried foods was associated with a greater risk for obesity .

If youre looking to trim your waistline, swapping your deep-fried foods for air-fried foods may be a good place to start.

Clocking in at 9 calories in every gram of fat, dietary fat contains over twice as many calories per gram as other macronutrients like protein and carbohydrates.

Because air-fried foods are lower in fat than deep-fried ones, switching to an air fryer may be an easy way to help cut calories and help you manage your weight.

Besides being higher in fat and calories, frying food can create potentially dangerous compounds like acrylamide.

Acrylamide is a compound formed in carbohydrate-rich foods during high-heat cooking methods like frying .

According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, acrylamide is classified as a probable human carcinogen, meaning that some research shows that acrylamide may be linked to cancer development .

The Environmental Protection Agency also finds that acrylamide is likely to be carcinogenic to humans .

Air-frying your food instead of using a deep fryer may help lower the acrylamide content of your fried foods.

In fact, one study found that air-frying reduced acrylamide by up to 90% compared to traditional deep-frying .

Editors Note:Air frying is the newest feature on many ranges. It seems straightforward enough to use heat to crisp up your food instead of frying it in oil.

The technology is available locally. I am a fan of B.Good and their healthy fries .

While Air Fry modes are touted as the next big feature, the better question is: Does it work?

Air frying has become one of the biggest cooking trends lately following the Instant Pot craze.

Typically done in a tabletop device, a couple of appliance manufacturers have attempted to include air frying modes in a standard range.

It makes sense to utilize the existing technology in the range and market it with the trendy label – if it works.

In this article, I tested out two different ranges, GE and LG, with the Air Fryer mode and compared it to a tabletop air fryer .

Let’s get started.

Do Air Fryers Make Tasty Food

Do Air Fryers Work?

What’s more meaningful is whether the food cooked in an air fryer tastes good. The answer? It depends. If the food that goes in is tasty, it’ll be tasty. But again, the issue with foods like french fries, chicken wings, and tater tots is never that they don’t taste good enough.

The issue with those foods, to the extent there is an issue, has more to do with health, as well as convenience. Deep-frying might be the best way to cook conventional fried foods, but mucking about with oil isn’t all that convenient.

Dont Worry About Buttons Or Functions

Similar to capacity, our experts agreed that the buttons on an air fryer are just marketing jargon. Those buttons do the same thing, Weinstein said, which is turn the heating element on and turn the fan on. Dont be fooled by an air fryer with a thousand different functions if youre using an air fryer to air fry, then all you need is the air fry button.

How Much Do Air Fryers Cost

Like anything else, you can pay a whole lot for an air fryer but in our experience, the most expensive air fryers aren’t necessarily the best. A basic air fryer is actually not a terribly complex machine so you really needn’t break the bank. Small no-frills air fryer models start at $25 or $30 and I’ve found they will do a serviceable job. That said, if you bump up another $30 or $40 you’re going to get a better build, sharper look and generally a bit more power too.

At the high end are the hybrid countertop ovens with air fry functions. These can go as high as $300 but you can get less advanced models from bargain brands or ones that are on sale for around $150.

Is Air Fried Food Healthy

The taste and texture of air fried food is comparable to the results of a deep fryer: Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. However, you only need to use a tiny amount of oil, if any at all .

So yes, compared to deep-frying, air frying is “definitely a healthier alternative if you commit to using just 1-2 tablespoons of a plant-based oil with seasoning, and you stick to air-frying veggies more than anything else,” says Good Housekeepings Nutrition Director Jaclyn London, MS, RD, CDN. “Any appliance that helps you and your family up your veggie game is key to weight management, reduced risk of chronic disease, and improved long-term health as we age.”

No To Very Little Oil Needed

How Does An Air Fryer Work

This is a very important point that all users should be well aware of. How does an air fryer combat health risks? You do not have to use any oil in most cases. However, in the case of meat, a very small quantity has to be sprinkled on the base. This is done to avoid sticking.

For most meals, there is no need to use any oil. In other words, you can have mouth-watering fried meals without worrying about any health issue.

Why After Four Years We Finally Recommend Air Fryers

Im always surprised that of all the appliances Ive tested, the one I get the most questions about is the air fryer. You may also have wondered if air fryers work well, and if you should get one. Back when I first started testing them, I would have said no, since a convection toaster oven can do everything an air fryer can do and more. But after four years of researching and testing different air-fryer models, although my main advice remains the same, my take has become more nuanced. If you dont have the space for a larger appliance, or if you want a dedicated machine to cook smaller portions of frozen snacks, meat, or vegetables, an air fryer might be a better choice for you.

Why did we change our tune? Initially, we didnt recommend pod-shaped air fryers because theyre less versatile than convection toaster ovens and dont cook food as evenly, so we didnt consider them to be a great value. At the time, the best-performing pod-shaped model cost about $100 more than our pick, the Cuisinart Chefs Convection Toaster Oven TOB-260N1, and we didnt see an incentive to spend so much more for a less capable machine. Now that the Cuisinart convection toaster oven is closer in price to the pod-shaped Philips Premium Airfryer HD9741/96, the playing field has leveled somewhat, and weve made the Philips a pick.

Are all fryers the same? No, not really. Among many brands, I can say that some machines cook better and more evenly. Almost all of them brown and chop the food above and below, although some do it more evenly. In the best kind of fryers, the food is also fried in the middle of the basket. The difference lies in the construction of the oven, and as you would expect, and, needless to say, the best are the most expensive. However, you can help by preheating these fries and shaking and turning them while cooking.

Can I do without the oil altogether?

Most manufacturers of air fryers and recipes recommend spraying it with some oil. However, I have discovered that this is unnecessary. The food remains just as crispy without a thin layer of oil. If you want to add a little butter or olive oil for flavor, I suggest that you do this after cooking to maximize the effect.

Does An Air Fryer Cook Food Faster

A bit, yes. The air fryer, like the Instant Pot, does also make quick work of cooking in general. Thats thanks to the fact that air fryers reach high temperatures in mere minutes , and then that hot air is circulated for faster cooking all around. Since almost everyone is pressed for time these days, shaving even just a few extra minutes off of the dreaded waiting-for-dinner limbo is a bonus.

So Do You Need An Air Fryer

The short answer is no. Given the air fryers size it takes up about as much space as a toaster oven, if not more and its relatively limited capacity, it hard to suggest that every kitchen needs an air fryer. You can do everything an air fryer does with minimal equipment and a regular home range, especially considering the amount of storage space required for even a smaller, still-bulky air fryer.

However, if youre a household with the kitchen space, cooking habits, and disposable income to support it, an air fryer could be incredibly efficient for you. You can cook small batches of everything from roasted vegetables, to chicken, to perfectly reheated frozen foods all in less time than it would take to heat a full-scale oven. You can also often yield more flavor and texture than a microwave or toaster oven can.

Do Air Fryers Cook Food Fast

The air fryer is very quick because it doesnt take long before the heated air circulating the air fryer is hot. Opposite to a deep fryer that has to heat an entire bath of oil before it starts frying, once there though, it cooks the food in a matter of minutes.

The air fryers two main components are the heating coil and the fan blowing the heated air throughout the air fryer.

Heating air takes less time than heating liquid, the hot air circulating the air fryer can reach impressive temperatures very quickly, making the air fryer a quick cooker.

It takes about 20 minutes for a medium sized chicken breast to go from raw to perfectly cooked. It may take more or less depending on the size of the chicken breast and the power of the air fryer but lets say approximately 20 minutes to cook.

During these 20-minutes the air fryer takes care of the chicken breast without my assistance, which gives me time to prepare the rest of the food. In some cases, you may have to open the air fryer midway and shake or stir.

How Do They Work

equipment

Air fryers are square or egg-shaped devices, about the size of a coffeemaker, that sit on your countertop. You put the food you want to fry — chopped potatoes, chicken nuggets, zucchini slices — into a slide-out basket. If you want, you can toss it in a light coating of oil.

A fan pushes heated air — up to 400 F — around the food. It’s a bit like a convection oven.

The circulating air cooks the outside of foods first, which creates a crispy brown coating and keeps the inside soft, just like deep-fried foods. As the food cooks, a container below the basket catches any grease that drops.

Bottom line: Air fryers create the crispy, chewy foods people love without all the oil.
