-Add herbs de provence salt for a rustic French twist.

-Cajun seasoning sprinkled over fries gives a spicy Five Guys like french fry flavor – straight from your air fryer.

-Brush fries in the final 15 minutes of baking time with butter, diced garlic, and finely diced parsley for sinfully rich garlic butter fries.

Ingredients You Need To Make Homemade French Fries

This easy french fries recipe only requires 3 basic ingredients. This is just a starting point, so feel free to play around by using different seasonings or types of potatoes. Heres what you need:

  • Oil
  • Salt and pepper

While the fries are cooking, make a batch of spicy mayo for dipping! All you need is mayonnaise, ketchup, and sriracha sauce.

What To Season Fries With:

Fries are really like a blank canvas. My favorite seasoning is just plain Kosher salt. Need some more flavor? You can also use seasoned salt.

Another favorite is to combine 1 tablespoon brown sugar + 1 teaspoon chili powder + 1 teaspoon salt and use that as a seasoning. Its slightly sweet and smokey and perfect for fries.

For an herby twist combine fresh chopped rosemary, thyme, lemon zest and salt and toss with the hot fries.

Or better yet melt some truffle butter, toss the hot fries in the melted butter and top with a sprinkling of parmesan cheese.

If you need some inspiration with what dish to serve these fries, my Air Fryer Chicken Legsare the perfect match. They go perfectly with the fries and are great for a quick summer dinner.

Why We Love Fries In The Air Fryer

My air fryer is my new best friend! This easy recipe for homemade air fryer french fries replaces deep-fried fries for the perfect hamburger partner!

They are healthier than fast food and have great flavor. I definitely feel better eating these fries!

An air fryer circulates heat around each piece, crisping the outside while leaving the inside nice and fluffy making them quicker than oven fries.

Instead of deep-frying french fries, the air fryer uses a fraction of oil and has minimal cleanup, too! Or, stick with good old ketchup!

No Air Fryer?! No Problem!

You can make amazing crispy baked fries in the oven too!

How To Prep Your Potatoes

15

I did not peel the potatoes because I like the texture the skin offers, but you can peel them if you want. I also think they taste better with the skin on, and you lose some vitamins when you peel them.

I cut them into 1/2-inch or so wedges, maybe a little smaller or bigger, give or take 1/8 of an inch. Just know that the thinner you slice them the more quickly they will fry upyou might have to shave a couple minutes off the fry time if they are skinny.

How Long Do You Cook Frozen Fries In The Air Fryer

No need to search for air fryer frozen french fries time. Frozen french fries take about 15 minutes to make in the air fryer.

You will want to shake the basket half-way through for even cooking. If you want extra crispy french fries, cook for an additional 5 minutes.

Needless to say cooking frozen fries this way is so much more efficient than in the oven. They become crispy and cook perfectly in the air fryer.

No more soggy frozen fries in this house!

Soaking: A Crispy Essential

While it may seem like a pain, soaking the potatoes in hot water for 10 minutes prior to cooking them in the air fryer is essential.

  • The water removes excess starch, allowing the fries to be their crispiest.
  • I like to use hot water to cook the potatoes slightly. This creates the double fried effect that makes many restaurant fries so addictive.

Tips For Making Air Fryer French Fries:

This works wonderfully with russet potatoes. These can be peeled or not, its up to you. Our family prefers peeled, so thats what I opted to do for these.

It is also likely that you will need to do multiple batches. If you do plan to do multiple batches, you can turn the oven to 225*F and store the earlier batches there until ready to serve.

This keeps them nice and warm without overcooking the french fries.

Its best to space these out well to allow them to cook evenly, which means you will likely need to do multiple batches unless you have that great new Ninja Foodi Double Air Fryer!

This recipe can be made in a Ninja Foodi using the air crisp function or a traditional air fryer, its totally up to you.

How To Cut Potatoes For Fries

To create fries that crisped but didnt burn, I found that cutting the potatoes into matchsticks that were ¼-inch wide on each side and 3 to 4 inches in length worked best.

  • In order for your fries to cook evenly in the same amount of time, its important for them to be cut the same size.
  • I suggest using a mandoline for easy cutting and to ensure uniform fries.

Which Potato Is Best For Air Fryer French Fries

When it comes to which potato to use for air fryer French fries, you have two options: Yukon gold potatoes and russet potatoes. Each will yield a different result.

  • Russet potatoes resulted in fries that were crispy outside, drier inside, and tasted most similar to fries you would eat in a restaurant.
  • Yukon gold potatoes resulted in fries that were equally crispy outside, but that had a firmer, creamier inside. Thanks to their naturally buttery taste, the French fries made with Yukon golds also had a richer flavor.

While Yukon golds are my favorites for Oven Roasted Potatoes and Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes, when it came to making a healthy version of classic French fries in the air fryer, russet potatoes did the best job.

Feel free to try both potatoes and pick your favorite! And you MUST try Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries at some point too!

How Long Do You Cook Fries In The Air Fryer

Air fryer french fries will cook in about 20 minutes, depending on how thick you cut your fries, and if they were frozen when you put them in there. I cut mine on the thinner side, which also helps them crisp up better! They were ready to go in 20 minutes.

If your fries are frozen, or a thicker cut, you may be looking at 30-40 minutes. The important part is that you take them out about every 5 minutes to shake the basket. If youve ever had someone tell you that the air fryer doesnt make fries crispy, its because they didnt follow this step!

Do You Need To Preheat The Air Fryer

Crispy Air

I always recommend preheating the air fryer before using it. You can turn it on for just 2-3 minutes before you put your food into the basket, and it will be preheated and ready to use.

If you skip this step it isnt the end of the world. It just ensures that your food is cooking instantly when it goes into the air fryer.

I used a combination of expeller pressed canola and coconut oil, which I typically use for skillet cooking and roasting veggies. Any kind of vegetable oil would work.

Keep in mind that if you use olive oil the potatoes will brown more quickly without necessarily being cooked all the way through. I did not enjoy that.

You only need about a tablespoon or so of oil, tossed to coat, in order to help crisp up the potatoes.

Yes and no. Air fried fries are healthier then their alternative, fully fried golden morsels of deliciousness. But youre still eating potatoes here, which are a higher calorie starch. So while you can enjoy them will less guilt then their counterparts, lets still keep everything in moderation.

Some nice truffle oil, some freshly grated Parmesan cheese, and a can of Guinness stout.

Why Guinness? The intensity of the beer flavor will increase the flavor profile of the fries after soaking for an hour or two.
