Tips For Cooking Hamburgers In The Air Fryer

Tip 1 preheating: I do preheat my air fryer, per the manufacturer recommendation.

Tip 2 temperature: I cooked my hamburgers at 360 degrees.

Tip 3 cook time: The amount of time will take a little trial and error, plus common sense, yall. But here is what I recommend. Note: I like my burgers medium to medium-well. A little pink in the middle is fine with me.

For 1/4 pound patties, I recommend cooking for 16 minutes, flipping half-way through. I also tested larger patties that were 1/3 pound a piece. Mine had some pink in the middle after cooking for 18 minutes, flipping half-way through).

Tip 4 adding cheese: I do not recommend adding cheese while the air fryer is ON. I did this, and my cheese slices blew off the patties and made a humongous mess. It was like a cheese tornado.

Anyway, I remedy this by opening the basket once the cook time is complete. Add the cheese slices, and then close the basket for about a minute or two. Itll still be hot enough to melt the cheese, even though the air fryer is off.

Tip 5 capacity: Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket.

have a larger air fryer, so I had no trouble making 3 to 4 hamburgers at a time. If you need to make them in batches, just cover the cooked ones with foil, and then add them back in for the final minute of cooking to heat them back up.

Tips The Best Air Fryer Burgers

  • Pour some water on the air fryer pan. This will prevent the fat from sizzling on the hot tray when it falls from the burgers.
  • You can easily use a fattier meat, but we had excellent results with 90% lean ground beef.
  • Use a great bun. We always use brioche buns for burgers. Theyre buttery and delicious with the burgers.
  • Opt for real cheddar cheese or yellow American cheese. Most prefer yellow cheese.

Secrets For The Best Burgers

  • Go Lean: Ground beef thats 85 percent lean is your best bet.
  • Hands off: When youre creating the patties, pack the meat loosely and use a light touch with minimal handling to ensure tender, juicy burgers and prevent rubbery/tough meat.
  • Salt just before cooking: Because salt draws out water and dissolves meat protein, you dont want to do it too far ahead of cooking. Waiting to salt just before they get air-fried ensures tender meat.
  • Add cheese carefully: When the burgers are almost done, slide the basket out, add the cheese to the burgers, and close the basket. Allow the cheese to melt for the last minute of cooking.

Last Touches And Were Done Time To Eat

Cuisinart Air Fryer Toaster Oven “Simply Broiled Burgers” with Chef Jonathan Collins

The interior surfaces are hot so be careful! I recommend using tongs to remove your patties when theyre done. Build your hamburgers, add condiments, and enjoy! The result is fantastic fresh hamburgers youll enjoyand cooked with far less fat & grease.

When youve reached the cooking time or your air fryer has shut off were ready!

While you can use a fork to remove the cooked patties from the fryer cook basket, I prefer tongs. Theyre a lot less likely to slip & fall on the floor. Theyre also easier to work with, too.

Put your patties on the buns, add condiments as you like, and most importantly, enjoy your fresh, tasty hamburgers!

Youll notice they have much less fat and grease than those cooked on a traditional restaurant electric grill.

You can enjoy cheaper, healthier, and fresher hamburgers at homewith restaurant-style taste thanks to your air fryer.

Since the patties will cool off rather quickly I strongly recommend serving them as soon as possible for the best taste.

I found mine just werent the same after they cooled off and especially if they had to be reheated.

Differences Between Fresh & Frozen Burgers

Choosing between a fresh or frozen burger might be the most important decision of all.

Fresh Burgers in an Air Fryer

My first attempts at cooking burgers in the air fryer were using half-pound patties from Sunshine Provisions, the same kind I sell in my BEAST Boxes. If you can, use fresh, never frozen, you will ultimately get the best results with the air-fryer. I have moved onto cooking fresh beef quarter-pound burgers, which I prefer. The main reason being that they could cook faster, and I get quite impatient waiting. And if you prefer the half-pounders, you can always double up on the patties when assembling your cheeseburger.

Frozen Burgers in an Air Fryer

When I have no choice and must use frozen patties, Chop House By Holten Steak Burgers is my burgers of choice. Ive always got a backup box of these in my freezer whenever the need or necessity arises. The patties are 1/3 pound, which puts them in a sweet spot between the sometimes not so filling 1/4 pound and the many times too filling 1/2 pound. There is no reason to defrost these they go straight in the air-fryer as is.Now, I know many Bubba Burger fans are wondering why I didnt mention or use them. The truth is, Im not a fan, but you do you.

Placing Patties In Your Fryer Properly

Diagram showing how to place frozen patties in your air fryer for best results. Its ok if the patties overlap a tiny bit. However, as little as possible is best. Thats because the patties need unblocked access to the hot air inside to cook properly. If a patty is covered too much it cant brown properly, wont taste as good, and wont reach the right cooking temperature. For smaller air fryers, it may be possible to fit more than 1 inside in some cases.

What you need to know about frozen hamburger patties is that when it comes to air fryers youre going to have to make compromises. Space is tight and that means you cant cook as many frozen patties as you could on a grill or in an oven.

Because of that, you might be tempted to stack them on top of each other to fit more inside. Dont!

Frozen patties should be placed inside your air fryer with as little overlap as possible to cook properly. Thats because when covered they wont get enough exposure to the hot cooking air thats circulating.

If you must try to squeeze several inside, try to keep them spread out as much as possible. For nice, well-done and browned hamburgers its a must!

By the way, browned patties simply taste better than those that arent.

Ive tested several ways of fitting patties in the smaller air fryer, but its hard to get results when trying to do that. My advice would be to cook 1 at a time in a smaller model.

What To Serve With Frozen Burgers In Air Fryer

Cuisinart Digital Air Fryer Toaster Oven

Air Fryer Burgers are a quick & easy lunch or dinner to prepare last minute and can be simply enjoyed alone or with nachos, chips or carrots and celery.

If you want to enjoy burgers as a more substantial meal feel free to serve with fresh salads and deep fried side dishes like french fries, sweet potato fries or onion rings.

    • Preheat Air Fryer to 350 F.
    • Place frozen burger patties into the basket or tray of your air fryer.
    • Sprinkle the top of each frozen burger with salt, black pepper, onion powder and garlic powder.
    • Cook the frozen burgers in your air fryer for 8-10 minutes. After 5 minutes, flip the patty to ensure even cooking. The internal temperature of a medium rare burger should measure 145 F.
    • When the air fryer is finished cooking your burgers, feel free to add a slice of your favourite cheese and continue cooking for an additional 30 seconds to melt.
    • Remove cooked hamburgers from the air fryer and place on a bun, adding your favourite toppings and condiments.

How Long Should I Cook Frozen Hamburger Patties

While test cooking I carefully watched the patties and measured cooking times for 2 typical air fryers: One for families and a personal model .

What I found was interesting. The proper time was about the same for both appliances.

I measured 14 minutes at 400 degrees to get well-done hamburgers that taste great.

The cooking process for frozen patties was basically like this:

    • 5-6 minutes into cooking: Thawing, begin to cook
    • 8 minutes pass: Lightly cooked, edible, but not really good tasting
    • 10-12 minutes: Begin to brown and more thorough cook, the taste improves
    • 14 minutes: Fully cooked, browned a bit on the outside, and delicious!

What can I say? Im very careful and a bit scientific about how I cook foods the first time. I wanted to be 100% sure I didnt burn them as well as compare how 2 different air fryers would perform.

Most of all, though, is that I wanted to be sure they taste great!

Tip:You can be confident how well food is cooked by using a digital temperature gauge with pointed probe to check. When the temperature inside reaches 165° or above the food should be safe to eat and nearly done. I use a nice little ThermoPro TP03A digital kitchen gaugethats very affordable and works great.

After 14 minutes at 400 degrees for most air fryers you should be done and ready to enjoy your delicious, healthy hamburgers.

Because of that, its easy to burn food until you get the hang of it.

How To Cook Air Fryer Hamburgers

Cooking your favorite hamburger patties is so easy to do in the air fryer. Everything including prep time and cook time is all done in less than 15 minutes.

  • Lightly coat the air fryer with cooking spray or cooking oil on a paper towel.
  • Preheat the air fryer for two minutes at 400°F. Add in the hamburger patties and cook for 10 minutes, then flip them over. Cook for another 6-10 minutes, keeping an eye on them in the last couple of minutes so that they dont overcook. I like my burgers crispy so I tend to cook mine on the longer side. The burgers will be cooked when the meat is no longer pink on the inside.

What Is A Safe Beef Internal Temperature For Beef

Air Fryer Beyond Burgers, Cook and Taste Test, Cuisinart Digital

This depends on what kind of beef you are using. Store-bought ground beef should not be eaten medium-rare because it was pre-ground and stored in possibly questionable conditions. So you need to ensure that it is safe by cooking it to medium-well.

But if you bought a steak at the store and ground it yourself, just before cooking the hamburgers, you would be safe to eat them at medium-rare.

    • If youre cooking with commercial ground beef: Cook it until it reaches an internal temperature of 155 degrees F for medium-well.
    • If youre using home ground beef: Cook it until 130 degrees F for medium-rare.
