What Can You Cook

Air fryers can cook practically anything, though there are some limits. While you can cook entire chickens with delicious, juicy results, their smaller overall size can be problematic if, for example, you wanted to cook up a giant platter of crispy wings.

Thats because items ideally need to be spread across the bottom of the basket in a single layer for even results. Due to their smaller footprint compared to ovens, this means wings and other items need to be cooked in batches, which might be inconvenient depending on how many hungry mouths you have to feed.

Misconceptions About Energy Usage

Since air fryers are smaller than ovens and heat up faster, most people believe they save energy .

While that can be true, consider this.

Air fryers continuously heat and circulate air until the food is ready. The heating element and fan expend energy throughout the entire cooking process.

In contrast, convection ovens limit the power flow and go into maintenance mode when the desired temperature is reached. When the thermometer detects the temperature is dropping, the heat and fan turn on.

That said, air fryers dont use much energy compared to other appliances in your home, especially since theyre only on for short periods each day.

Most models use between 1.4 kWh and 1.7 kWh per hour of use. Depending on electricity prices in your area, air fryers cost between 18 and 25 cents per hour to run.

The point is, dont buy an air fryer because you think itll save energy and money. Energy usage varies by model, but you wont see a significant change in your electricity bill in most cases .

Air Fryer Vs Deep Fryer

How To Buy An Air Fryer

Let’s face it. Most people love fried food. Some eat fried food every day, while others only indulge once in a while. There is no denying that most fried foods are very tasty, but with more and more people looking at healthier ways to prepare their meals, many fried foods have been relegated to occasional treats. That was until air fryers hit the market place. These great little kitchen appliances need little or no oil and can produce food that has fried texture and taste, but without the artery-clogging fats and oils. But do they really live up to all the hype? Well take a look at the air fryer and how it compares to a deep fryer so you can decide for yourself.

An Air Fryer Doesnt Hold As Much As An Oven

If you are cooking for more than 3 or 4 people, then an air fryer may not be the best option for you since most of them are relatively small when compared to something like a convection oven.

While you would be able to fit a chicken and some trays of veggies in a regular oven, with an air fryer you would have to choose one or the other since it couldnt fit both at once.

This smaller size means that if youre cooking for a large crowd, everything would have to be done one at a time.

With that being said, there are some larger models that you could use if you plan on only cooking the side dishes or the main dish in the air fryer and using the stovetop or other methods for the rest of the meal.

I wouldnt say the size is a complete deal-breaker, but it is definitely something to consider if you have a larger household that you regularly cook for.

No Oil That Can Go Rancid Or Splatter

Nothing will go to waste with an air fryer! I know that you can find it hard to eat leftovers since you will not receive the original taste and texture. But with an air fryer, you will not throw anything since it allows you to reheat foods yet get their original taste.

It reactivates oil in your food and restores the crispiness. Ensure that you check your food regularly to avoid burning or drying.

You can reheat all types of food except water-based ones, from chicken wings, French fries, and battered fish, to fried chicken, without getting soggy compared to reheating in the microwave. As time goes by, you will learn the time your appliance takes to reheat your food without grease.

When Shouldn’t You Use An Air Fryer

Air fryers are great for crisping foods, but there are certain scenarios when you shouldn’t use one.

  • You shouldn’t use an air fryer for liquids, as they can easily spill and splatter, even when heated in a heat-resistant vessel. You also shouldn’t use an air fryer for foods that require a wet batter, like tempura, because the coating doesn’t set quickly enough to stick, which can cause drips and smoking as well as failing to produce a crispy food.
  • We wouldn’t recommend an air fryer for many baking tasks: Most can’t actually bake because they have heating elements only on the top of the unit versus the top and the bottom like a toaster oven or oven. The basket or shelf design also generally restricts the size of your baked goods. Air fryers are, however, great for desserts that benefit from browning like a baked apple or an individual sized crumble.
  • You should avoid cooking greasy foods in an air fryer. If air frying something greasy, use a lower temperature to help reduce splattering, which can cause grease to hit the elements and create smoke.
  • Beware of lightweight food, such as bread, as well some air fryers with a powerful fan can cause it fly around.

An air fryer gives you a beautiful degree of crispiness on the outside, with a perfectly cooked tender and delicious inside too. And it does so using little to no fat. Using zero oil is the healthiest way to go but may not always be practical.

Weve had the best results overall by using a little bit of oil in our air fryer. Compared to a deep fryer the difference is like night and day from a health point of view. Theres no two ways about it deep fried food isnt good for the body. Foods cooked in a deep fryer absorb plenty of the oil they are cooked in. So you end up consuming more fat. Since all oil is at least 120 calories per tablespoon, this can result in considerable additional calories and added weight.

In an air fryer, a little oil goes a long way thanks to the rapidly moving heated air. Any excessive oil tends to drain away from the food which is a huge advantage over deep frying.

Con: Air Fryers Can Get A Bit Pricey

On the other hand, some argue that compared to other countertop appliances an air fryer can seem like a considerable investment particularly those air fryers at the higher end of the scale. If youre new to air frying and you want to see what theyre all about, $250 can be a big chunk of change to spend on something youre not sure about.

Not Good For Large Groups

You will have a hard time using the air fryer to prepare food for a large number of people. The appliance is small and can therefore only accommodate a small amount of food at a time.

If you have a big family or if you get visitors then youll be forced to cook in batches. This can be tiresome.

The disadvantage of this is that by the time you finish cooking, the initial batch of food will be cold.

Therefore, this kitchen appliance is suitable for small families that can cook their food in one round.

Air Fryers Have Many Health Benefits

PRO: As weve already covered, air fryers are a healthier alternative to using a deep fryer or heading to your nearest drive-thru for your fix, for that matter. But the appliance comes with more health benefits than just cutting down on calories. For example, when potatoes are fried in oil, it makes a chemical called acrylamide, which has been linked to cancer. Using an air fryer instead can reduce the amount of the chemical by up to 90 per cent.

CON: While air fryers definitely crisp-ify your food quicker than the conventional oven, they can be slower than a regular deep fryer because the oil heats up more quickly than air. So, if youre in a rush and you dont mind a little extra oil, a deep fryer may be right for you.

Still on the fence about purchasing an air fryer? Be sure to shop around and read reviews to see what other home cooks think about this little kitchen appliance with a big reputation.

Cant Cook Light Items

An air fryer uses a powerful stream of hot air to cook your food. The downside to this is the fact that any light food you place inside your air fryer will simply fly around the cooking compartment . At worse, your food wont get cooked at best, it could get stuck in your air fryers heating element and cause a potential fire hazard!

If you want to cook light food, you need to find a way to pin it down. I like to put it between two wire racks personally.

How We Tested Air Fryers

What is the first thing you think of when you consider air fryers? Chips, of course, so our homemade fries test was crucial.

The key to crisp fries was to peel and soak the potatoes in cold water for half an hour to remove starch, before drying thoroughly. We used Maris Piper potatoes for all.

We looked at the manuals for each model and followed their directions for cooking temperature, time and the quantity of oil needed. If the type of oil wasn’t specified them we used vegetable.

Anything from the size of the cut to the variety of potato can make a difference here, so itâs always good to gauge things halfway through the time. But for the purpose of the test, we shook ingredients only when prompted too and scored the appliance based on its performance.

We tested the air fryers using set criteria and scored each one on the following core areas out of five. The average of all determined the overall star rating they achieved:

Quality of foodTo ensure fairness, we initially cooked chips in every fryer we tested. We looked at how evenly they âfriedâ and whether they were brown and crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.

Ease of useNo-one wants to resort to a YouTube video to work out how to use a new gadget. We looked for fryers with clear, simple instructions, so we could get them out of the box and cooking our dinner as quickly as possible. Fryers also scored highly if the icons or control buttons were easy to use and intuitive.
