Toss Sliced Carrots And Diced Red Potatoes In A Tablespoon Of Olive Oil And Air Fry For 15 Minutes At 400f

Air Fryer Baked Potatoes | Crispy & Fluffy!

In case you cant tell from the photo above, you can get away with imperfectly sliced carrots and potatoes here. Aim to keep the potato slices around the same size as the potatoes, and youll be perfectly fine.

As a quick air fryer note, I use a 301 model Ninja Foodi for air frying. If youre using a smaller or larger air fryer, youll probably need to slightly adjust the cook times.

Use the photo below to get an idea of what your potatoes and carrots should look like after air frying the first time. Youre looking for some wrinkling on the potato skins and some browning around the edges.

You want your veggies to be mostly cooked and fork tender before adding a little extra olive oil and the seasoning blend. Theres no harm in extending the time in the air fryer by a few minutes in this step if youre unsure about them being done.

Pro Tips To Get The Perfectly Baked Potatoes In The Air Fryer

  • Dont forget the oil! This will help the skin crisp up, and make sure that youre using oil with high smoking point such as canola oil, corn oil, sunflower oil, and avocado oil.
  • If you overcrowd your air fryer, then your potatoes might not crisp well. So always make sure that theres at least 1 inch between the potatoes.
  • If your potatoes are quite large, then you might need more time for them to be perfectly baked. After 30 minutes of air frying, check the potatoes with a fork or a knife and see if you need to cook them for longer.
  • If you like eating crispy potato skins , you can add flavorings after spraying the oil. Season with sea salt flakes, ground black pepper, dried garlic, dried onion, smoked paprika, you name it!

Why I Love These Air Fryer Roasted Potatoes

For starters, these air fryer potatoes taste even better than I thought possible. Thats likely due to two things: the way the potatoes are sliced, and the seasoning blend used to flavor them. My instinct has always been to quarter baby Yukons for roasting, but this recipe instructs you to halve them. I was skeptical during my first go-round, but I quickly became a convert. Halving the potatoes gives you a bonus amount of fluffy, creamy goodness underneath the crispy exterior almost like a mini baked potato.

The seasoning blend is also a revelation. Always laser-focused on adding enough salt , I neglected to even consider other seasonings. But this recipe has you add Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and black pepper, and I like to throw in a little Cajun seasoning, too. This combination ensures every potato packs a punch, but still tastes neutral enough to sit next to any main. I also like that you dont need tons of oil just one tablespoon per pound of potatoes.

And lets not ignore the ease. Theres no pre-soaking or par-boiling required. Simply pop em in the air fryer while you prep the rest of dinner. Even the midway flip is just a shake of the basket no tedious turning of individual spuds.

Tips For Buying Potatoes

I use russet potatoes in this recipe. They are the classic brown-skinned potatoes with firm, white flesh. The potatoes’ nutrient-dense skin is thick, making them perfect for getting those crispy potato skins in the air fryer.

Ive heard of people trying air fryer sweet potatoes, red potatoes, or Yukon gold potatoes as well, but Id say russet potatoes are the best choice for cooking this way.

Potato skins contain potassium, vitamin C, calcium, and good carbohydrates like fiber. Plus, a baked potato is gluten-free.

When buying potatoes, look for firm potatoes with as few blemishes as possible. Bruises, cuts, soft ends, wrinkles — and those spouts — are all signs the potato is past its prime.

Also, pick potatoes that are organic or grown using organic methods if possible. Potatoes are on the Dirty Dozen list, which means they are among the 12 foods grown with the most pesticides. You can read more about the Dirty Dozen here.

  • Wash and scrub the potatoes, then pat them dry with a dishtowel. Using a fork, poke holes in the potatoes.
  • Place potatoes on a cutting board or in a bowl and drizzle with olive oil. Sprinkle with kosher salt and rub to coat the potatoes.
  • Place potatoes in the basket of the air fryer and cook on 400 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes. After 30 minutes, test the potatoes with a fork. If the fork pierces the potato all the way through, its done. If not, cook for an additional 5-8 minutes.
  • Carefully remove the potatoes from the air fryer using oven mitts. Slice open the top of the potato and squeeze the ends to release the steam.
  • Add butter, salt, and pepper or any of your favorite toppings!

Which Potatoes Are Best For The Air Fryer

Similar to these Roasted Potatoes and Slow Cooker Potato recipes, the potatoes you use in the air fryer matters. Heres what it boils down to:

    • Russets: These will air fry beautifully. They will crisp up wonderfully with a pale golden color. Their insides will be soft and fluffy with a mild flavor. Always a good choice!
    • Yukon Golds or Yellow Potatoes: These are a favorite for air frying because they will crisp up perfectly but also turn a bit deeper golden color because of the lower starch and higher sugar content. Their crisp will be a tad softer than a russets however, their insides will be creamy and full of flavor.
    • Reds: Red potatoes when roasted will turn an even darker golden brown because of their even higher sugar and lower starch content. They will be crispy coming out but soften quickly on the outside. Their insides will be creamy and soft.
    • Baby Potatoes or New Potatoes: These are not a variety or type of potato. They are regular potatoes that have been thinned from the crop early. These potatoes have a high sugar content and roast in the air fryer perfectly as well as hold their shape. Although they can be hard to find in the grocery store as they are somewhat seasonal they are usually a favorite.

How To Bake Potatoes In An Air Fryer

Air fryer baked potatoes are surprisingly simple and can be made with any make or model. Chebotar’s step-by-step instructions are as follows:

  • Wash your potatoes. Scrub them gently under running water to remove any dirt and pat them dry.
  • Lightly oil the skin. Spray or brush the skins with a light, even coating of oil.
  • Season liberally. Sprinkle sea salt and pepper all over your potatoes.
  • Arrange potatoes in the basket. Lay the potatoes in the air fryer so that they are not overlapping and there’s space for air to flow between them.
  • Cook. Air fry up to four potatoes for 30 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit, turning them over halfway through.
  • Do the fork test. Insert a fork into the potatoes to check if they’re done. If it doesn’t slide in and out easily, they need more time.
  • Remove the potatoes when done. Your potatoes may finish cooking at different rates, especially if they vary in size. Remove any potatoes that pass the fork test, and return any potatoes that are not finished cooking to the basket for five more minutes or until they’re fork-tender.

    Toaster Oven Air Fryer Tips

While cooking a whole potato in an air fryer toaster oven takes about the same amount of time there are a few adjustments you might want to make.

Lower The Temperature. For our ovens, lowering the temperature to 375°F helped to keep the potatoes from over-browning before they could cook through the center. If your oven runs hot or the air fry setting is really intense, you may have better results with an even lower temperature like 350°F.

Use a Pan To Catch Drips. The little holes in an air fry basket make it great for circulating heated air around the food and crisping it up. But if youre cooking something that might drip and dont have a pan underneath the basket there is the potential for things to get messy.

One of our air fryers is designed in a way that makes it difficult to use a pan with the basket. To bake potatoes, I like to swap the basket for my trusty quarter sheet pan/wire rack combo. The potatoes bake up nicely without leaving a mess behind to clean up!

Instant Pot Vortex Baked Potatoes As A Main Course Or A Side Dish

Most people will serve an air fryer baked potato as a side dish, but I like to use them as a meal as well. You can top your potatoes with all sorts of good things, and if you top them with quite a few items, you might suddenly find that they are a meal in and of themselves.

Try any of these options, or get creative and just put anything that you love on top:
