What Can You Cook In An Air Fryer And What In Convection Oven
Air fryers cook foods that normally require dry heat, such as roasting and frying. Its main purpose is to cook food of many shapes and sizes, such as meat, fries, burgers, fish sticks, pizza rolls, cookies, sandwiches, and small pastries.
Breaded foods like mozzarella sticks, jalapeno poppers, or chicken nuggets also are a great fit for an air fryer. Just remember to use minimal or no oil at all in order to avoid soggy results!
For your larger baking needs, convection ovens are the better option and can bake things like breads, cakes, and pies in a fast manner that will make your house smell delicious!
Convection Oven Vs Air Fryer Which One Is Better For You
As the name suggests, a convection oven circulates hot air around the food to allow for even cooking on all sides.
Convection ovens do not cook by circulating hot air as an air fryer does rather, they use gas or electric heating elements to heat up an oven cavity and surround the food with radiant heat.
This means that convection ovens are best suited for cooking things that require indirect heat and high temperatures like bread, pizzas, meat pies, pastries, and cookies.
On the other hand, an air fryer is best for recipes that require dry frying or stir-frying since it uses circulating hot air to cook your food. There is also no need to add any oil or butter when using an air fryer to cook food.

A Few Thoughts On The Hybrid Ovens That Didn’t Make The Cut
The Cuisinart Digital Air Fryer Toaster Oven: This hybrid convection oven and air fryer wasn’t terrible and it certainly had one of, if not the most powerful, air fry functions. That proved to be a blessing and curse since some of the food I cooked burned on the edges and cooked unevenly — I think due in part to the high-octane super convection fan. This air fryer oven also had my least favorite interface, and I found myself mashing my fingers on the dials and buttons in frustration at times just hoping I’d get to the right setting since it never seemed to do what I wanted with ease. It’s also not cheap and thus not an oven I’d recommend.
Calphalon Precision Air Fry Oven: The Calphalon scored high marks in the toast test with an even browning, but that’s about where the accolades ended. This oven was slow to preheat, had trouble holding a consistent temperature and the air fry function was among the weakest. It also has no internal light, which most of them do. I admittedly do like the look of it and the interface is elegant and simple to use. This oven can also be had for about $150, so it is among the more budget-friendly options.
Can A Convection Oven Be Used To Air Fry
Convection toaster ovens can air fry in the same way a convection oven can. We test two models, one from Breville and one from Cuisinart, that have a dedicated air fry setting. Both toaster ovens produce wings and fries in about the same time as the oven air fryers, using 1 to 3 teaspoons of oil.

What Is A Convection Oven And How Does It Work
A convection oven is a type of oven that circulates hot air around the food to allow for even cooking on all sides.
Depending on the type, a convection oven can cook up to 30% faster than other traditional ovens because it cooks more evenly. That means it cooks up your dish faster without compromising any taste or texture!
In addition, by moving hot air around the food in a circular motion, convection ovens are excellent for making crispy pizzas and baked goods. Theyre also less likely to scorch or dry items out.
A convection oven will typically have an electric fan that uses the airflow from the fan to make this happen. The fan is usually located at the back or top of the oven chamber . The fan is often controlled with a knob, and you can turn it to increase or decrease the airflow.

The Drawbacks Of An Air Fryer
- When using your air fryer, you can’t check on it as easily as you can with a convection oven. While some home chefs are perfectly fine to set it and forget it, others have a tendency to monitor the doneness of the food to get it just right.
- Air fryers are considerably louder than a convection oven, reaching 65 decibels or so, according to Philips. To give you an idea, this is the same noise level of a vacuum cleaner. So, not exactly quiet. But then again, lots of kitchen appliances are loud, too.
- Cleaning air fryers takes some effort. You have to clean a perforated basket along with its bucket. And if you’re cooking, let’s say buffalo chicken wings, you’ll have to clean any drippings they leave behind, too. The convection oven is a clear winner here as all you have to do is clean the pan. For an even easier cleanup try lining the pan with aluminum foil before filling it with wings and loading it into the oven.

Difference Between Air Fryer And Convection Oven
An Air fryer circulates the air more rapidly inside a small chamber. Its also more portable. However, since its smaller, it will accommodate a smaller amount of food. A countertop convection oven offers additional cooking options for the same or lower price. Also, cleaning an Air fryer is more difficult.
Using A Convection Oven As An Air Fryer
Both air fryers and convection ovens cook recipes about 20°F to 25°F lower than a recipe for a conventional oven, so in terms of temperature, many air-fryer recipes work in a convection oven. “The conversion is very similar, as long as there is enough airflow for air-frying, such as a basket tray,” Sieber says. A perforated tray or even a large air-frying basket for a convection oven will help crisp foods in a convection oven to get the same air-fried results, especially with these air-fryer egg rolls and these air-fryer jalapeño poppers. Because many air-fryer recipes are intended for small batches, you can often double the recipe for a convection oven just remember to space food out on the trayespecially for air-fried Brussels sprouts,air-fried buffalo cauliflower, and air-fried chicken tendersto make sure the air can easily touch all sides of the food. Although cooking times for recipes should be close in both an air fryer and convection oven, keep in mind that air fryers cook a little faster than convection ovens, so some air-fryer recipes may take a bit longer in a convection oven. Check to see if the food is ready around the time stated in the recipe, then follow up every 2 to 3 minutes if it needs a bit more time to brown.

Air Fryer Vs Convection Oven
Given that the air fryer and convection oven cook food in quite similar manners, picking between them is not always a straightforward affair. But as much as they are similar in various aspects, these cooking appliances will also have some key differences which should help make your choice easier. And here are some of their few differences.
1.How they Cook
These appliances will use quite similar cooking methods as they will both cook by spreading hot air over and around the food. However, there are still a few differences in how they do this.
The air fryer will generally cook food by forcefully circulating air over the food and many models will use a special rapid air technology that allows them to heat up fast.
They will have either one or two heating elements and also just one fan or a couple. The cooking chamber is often always sealed out completely almost like in an instant pot.
Another point to keep in mind is that air fryers will typically be electric as it is hard for any other power source to work well with the cooking technique.
Convection ovens, on the other hand, will be more like regular ovens but with a built-in fan, and they can use either gas or electricity.
They will cook by producing heat using conduction means like a regular oven, but they will also have forced convection which will force the hot air to circulate inside to speed up the cooking process.
3. Size and Footprint

Toaster Ovens: A Mediocre Middleman
Want every function in one tiny box? Say hello to the toaster oven. This wild card appliance claims to do so much with so little. Optimized for snacks and appetizers, toaster ovens can be useful for some foods.
Small batches of foods like pizza bites, mozzarella sticks and even cookies do well enough in a toaster oven. You can choose from specialty modes for certain foods like cookies or pizza, and some models even include air frying. Our current favorite is the $150 Panasonic FlashXpress, a toaster oven that aced our tests and boasts thousands of great customer reviews.
Once you get into things like actual toast or a pizza big enough for more than one person, toaster ovens aren’t the best option. Put your toast in a toaster and your pizza in an oven. That’s how you’ll get the best results.
That’s not to say toaster ovens aren’t worth it. They certainly offer more functionality than an air fryer. They preheat faster and use slightly less energy than a full-size oven, and you don’t have to blow your budget to purchase one.
If you’re looking for a less-than-full-size appliance, I’d go for a toaster oven with an air-fry option before purchasing an air fryer solo.
Chop Your Food Properly
Foods like french fries are in slender sticks to ensure there is plenty of exterior surface for browning. Cut your food into long sticks or tiny, bite-sized chops. When cooking meals like tofu, consider tearing them to bits rather than slicing them. A craggy shape encourages the food’s edges to be crispy and brown.

Fan Speed Placement And Size:
The fans in air fryers are larger and run quicker than those in convection ovens. According to one manufacturer, the fan on their air fryer setting is 30 percent faster than the fan on their convection setting. The fan is situated just below the heating element on the top of an air fryer. Its in the back in a convection oven, either in the center or on the side.
How To Adjust Air
You dont need to seek out air-fryer recipes to get great results in a convection toaster ovenany recipe written for a conventional oven works. However, if you have your eye on a recipe written specifically for an air fryer but want to prepare it in a convection toaster oven, you have to make some minor adjustments for best results.
Generally, you need to increase the temperature and cooking time in an air-fryer recipe a bit to compensate for the toaster ovens larger cavity. You dont need to buy an air-frying basketa regular quarter-sheet pan will give you similar air-frying results in a convection oven . Here are some tips for cooking some common dishes in your convection toaster oven.
- Roasted vegetables: Roast at 425 °F with speed convection for 12 to 20 minutes, tossing halfway through cooking time.
- Air-fryer pickles: Bake at 425 °F with speed convection for 15 minutes, flipping halfway through cooking time.
- Hand-cut fries: Bake at 425 °F with speed convection for 40 to 45 minutes, tossing occasionally.
