What Is An Air Fryer

Air Fryer Breakfast – Eggs, Hash Browns & Sausage!

The Air Fryer is a healthier alternative to frying foods. It’s basically a small, powerful convection oven that sits on your countertop.

It circulates hot air around the food you’re cooking, which is what gives it that crisp texture that mimics fried food .

I personally use this Ninja MAX XL Air Fryer because it hold 5.5 quarts, which is more than most. It has worked great so far and we just love how easy it is to use!

The Procedure Of Making Frozen Shredded Hash Browns In Air Fryer Easily

During my initial days in the US, I was alarmed once I heard the term Hash Brown. I took it for Hashish or something close to that. But soon I realized that it is something else as it is regularly appearing in the menus of various eateries as breakfast items or even as a side dish. I decided to give it a try and, to my astonishment, once the dish was placed in front of me it was nothing but finally chipped potatoes or a thinner version of potato fries. As days and weeks passed, I dug my heel further and decided to avoid eating outside especially breakfast. However, cooking was never my forte and I used to create a huge mess while cooking in my tiny kitchen. A visiting friend suggested me to go for an air fryer to avoid mess as well as for having healthier meals. Air fryer became the number one item on my wish list and soon it landed on my kitchen counter.

Cooking my meals in the air fryer for the first time was a pleasant experience as I did that seamlessly without creating a usually huge mess and had the sense of achievement of making healthier food for myself. Slowly, I noticed that I have started enjoying cooking. For breakfast, I eat hash browns along with eggs like scrambled, fried, poached, or boiled, eggs. In my view, hash browns always make a great partnership with eggs.

Air Fryer Hash Browns (From Frozen)

Wash, peel, and grate the potatoes. Collect the grated potatoes in a cheesecloth and squeeze out the excess moisture. Then I add the seasonings, mix, and press the potatoes in a greased small loaf pan that can fit into the air fryer basket.

Place the pan in the air fryer and air fry at 400 0F for 5 minutes. Then, remove the pan and flip it to remove the big potato patty on a wooden board. Then, using a knife cut it into equal pieces. Now air fry them by putting them in the air fryer.

They would take about 10 minutes at 400 0F. Flip them using a non-metal spatula halfway through the cooking time. Air fry the hash brown patties to your liking .

Since most frozen hash brown patties already contain oil from their original cooking, you can make this recipe with absolutely no oil needed.

Can I Stack The Hash Brown Patties In The Air Fryer

While stacking most frozen foods in an air fryer is okay, Ido not recommend stacking these hash brown patties.

The patties start to get a little fragile once cooked andcan fall apart if stacked.

My rule of thumb is if the basket is shaken to rotate the food instead of flipping them with a spatula, the food can be stacked, like French fries, chicken wings, and roasted carrots.

Tips For Making Air Fryer Hash Browns:

This method is done using frozen hash brown patties, I was able to pick these up at Aldi but they taste just like the hash browns you would purchase at your local McDonalds. The best part is now you can make some similar right at home.

Its best to only make the amount you need, so if you only need 2, just make 2, they are best eaten right out of the air fryer nice and warm. They do not have that same great taste when reheated again, in my opinion.

The temperature and time will stay the same regardless of how many you choose to cook at one time.

Its also best to use a cooking oil spray to give them a nice coat of oil before air frying them, not a lot of oil just a light coat.

What Air Fryer Is Best

Air Fryer Hashbrowns From Scratch Melanie Cooks

Choosing an air fryer depends on the size of your family and how many people you typically cook for. Here are a few options that may work for you.

Instant Pot Air Fryer Lid – This is helpful for a family of 1-2 people who are looking to save space in the kitchen without adding a whole separate appliance. While the air fryer lid is still large, it fits on top of an instant pot, and you can usually store it this way as well. Overall this saves space more than a separate air fryer would. The downside is its challenging to cook food for a large amount of people. I also notice that the lower basket does not cook as well as the top basket. However, it is the least expensive at roughly $60-70.

Ninja – One of the most popular air fryers, this comes in 4 quart or a dual, which cooks in two separate baskets at the same time. The XL version comes with a 5.5 quart basket, which would be best for a large family. A 4 quart costs about $99.

Philips – Philips air fryers also come in a range of sizes and are better for a larger family as well. They tend to have the best reviews as far as reliability, but are more expensive. A 4 quart air fryer costs about $150.

Why Wont My Hash Browns Get Crispy

The best way to achieve crispy hash browns is to use frozen potatoes instead of fresh ones. The freezing helps evenly release the moisture in the potatoes for a crispy result.

You can use a brand like Simply Potatoes, or your personal preference. For this recipe, make sure you opt for shredded frozen hash browns.

How Many Hash Browns Can I Put In An Air Fryer At One Time

Be sure to put the frozen hash browns in one single layer inside your air fryer basket. If you crowd the potatoes too much, they wont cook properly.

When it comes to placing food in your air fryer basket, less is always more. If you want to serve up a large number of hash browns, cook them in batches.

How To Reheat Hash Browns

The space in an air fryer is not that large, so when reheating, consider the size of your air fryer and do not stack the frozen hash brown or place them on each other. The steps to reheating them are simple.

Put the frozen browned potatoes into the air fryer basket and spread them in a single layer to not overlap. Do not use oil because they might already have, no need to spray the air fryers basket, and do not thaw either.

Cook at 380°F for 8 to 10 minutes. You can flip them after the cooking time if finished and cook for extra 3 minutes or until browned to your desire.

The timing for reheating hash brown above is tested on an air fryer thats not preheated first and might change when cooking in batches because the air fryer would have been preheated already.

Why Do I Need To Cook Hash Browns With An Air Fryer

An air fryer cooks healthy foods. It is made to cook crispy and delicious foods without extra fat or oil. It gives you room to air fry your favorite food, such as hash browns from frozen, and keeps them crunchy.

The air fryer wont take much huge space on your countertops it can fit into a small corner.

You can use the air fryer every day. This means you can broil, bake, roast, fry, and reheat. Its durability is guaranteed.

The air fryer is easier to cook with, the heating element and the power help cook food faster than any other cooking method.

Why Air Fryer Hashbrowns

We all love potatoes. Be it old or young, kid or adults every one has a weakness for spuds. Hash browns come closest to aloo tikki you get in India. It usually has 4 main ingredients potatoes, maize flour, canola oil and salt. Hash browns are great as a filler in sandwiches or burgers too. Sometimes they may be the only vegetarian/ vegan dish you may get at a restaurant chain abroad in remote areas.

What Type Of Potato Should I Use

There are just so many types of potatoes at the grocery store. Which kind is best for hash browns? Well, it depends…

Waxy potatoes are long or round in shape with thin, smooth skin. They are relatively low in starch and high in moisture. They hold their shape when cooked which means that the hash browns won’t fall apart but they also won’t get crispy either.

Starchy potatoes are long in shape and have coarse skin. They are high in starch and low in moisture. If you’re looking for extra crispy hash browns, use these potatoes. The only downside is that the hash browns will fall apart and they won’t hold their shape.

In between potatoes they have medium starch and medium moisture. They’ll hold their shape and slightly crisp up.

For the best hash browns, I like a mix of both Yukon Gold and Russet potatoes but you can use just Russet potatoes, too. Soaking the shredded potatoes in water will remove some of the starch and will ensure that you’ll have the crispiest hash browns.

How To Make Them

Air Fryer Hash Browns (From Frozen)

Gather your ingredients. All you need is potatoes, salt, a little oil and onion powder, if youd like.

You may peel the potatoes or leave the peel on, just scrub well first.

Then shred your potatoes using a box shredder into a plate, cutting board, or directly into a large mixing bowl to save an extra dish to wash.

Next, youll cover the potato shreds in cold water, give it a stir and let them sit for about 20 minutes. Then drain in a colander and rinse with cold water.

NOTE: This process removes the starch, resulting in crispy air fryer hash browns later, so do not skip.

Now dry your potato shreds using a clean dish towel or paper towels. Lay them out and press and squeeze out as much moisture as possible.

Return the DRY potato shreds to your mixing bowl . Add your seasoning and the oil, if using, and mix well. Then transfer the shreds to your basket.

Spread the shreds into an even layer and try not to leave any thicker areas or those spots wont crisp up as much. Then cook until golden and crispy, no need to flip.

Once golden and desired level of crispiness is reached, carefully remove the hash brown from your basket.

Use a silicone spatula to gently separate the edges if needed, and then lift it out. Enjoy with all your favourite breakfast foods or as a side dish.

Break off pieces or use a pizza slicer to cut into cleaner, cut wedges, if preferred.

One round hash brown easily serves 2 with a generous portion or you may cut into 4 triangular slices.

How To Cook Hash Browns In An Air Fryer

Air fryer hash browns are the ultimate in easy comfort food. Whether you have them with breakfast, lunch or dinner, they are quick to prepare, and come out perfectly in the air fryer every time.

Air frying is the best way of cooking frozen hash browns . The reason for this is simple. As you start to cook frozen foods they begin to defrost before the cooking process actually begins.

This can lead to the outside of the food absorbing water and becoming soft and sometimes downright soggy! Yuck!

This is why air fryers are so great for cooking frozen hash browns. The hot air that circulates during the cooking process helps to dry this moisture as it occurs so the outside of the food will crisp up nicely.

Also, there is no need to wait for the oven to heat up like you do with a conventional oven. Preheating the air fryer only takes a couple of minutes .
