Best Vegetarian & Vegan Option: Fruffalo Wings
Not that there was any competition here , but these Fruffalo Wings are definitely a good option for anyone who is vegetarian, vegan, or just wants to cut back on meat but still enjoy the game day tradition of wings. The taste and texture of the field roast “sausages” is more similar to that of chicken than another meat substitute like cauliflower bites.
I will admit they looked a bit off-putting at first, mostly because they are naked with Buffalo sauce in a separate packet, but once tossed in the sauce they look a lot like chicken nuggets. They’re fairly crispy and take on the flavor of the Buffalo sauce, so all in all, pretty decent.

How To Preheat Your Air Fryer
I measured the preheat times to 380°F for both of my air fryers before I cooked wings. Even though they reach their full cooking temperature in under 5 minutes, as a rule its best to use that amount of time. The internal surfaces should be hot and ready to cook food on contact so youll want to be confident theyre up to temperature.
Preheating is really easy! The way you go about doing it depends on the type of air fryer youll use.
Preheating is done two ways:
- Digital controls/push buttons: Most have a preheat button to take care of this. When used, the unit will heat itself for the time required then shutoff. You can also set the temperature and cooking time manually to do the same thing.
- Air fryers with dial controls can be set to the cooking temperature then set for 5 mins cooking time. When the timer is done youre ready to add food and start the cooking process.
In either case, 5 minutes is a typical preheat time that works well. Use a preheating temperature thats the same as youll use for your food .

The Secret To Extra Crispy Wings In Air Fryer
- DO NOT overcrowd the basket. It might sound like a good idea if you are in rush and dont have much time to cook in batches. But believe me you dont want to do this! To get crispy skin and let wings cook properly air fryer needs enough air to circulate. If you will ovecrowd the basket you will end up with soggy chicken wings.
- If you cook chicken wings from frozen, make sure to rinse them first. Wings are usually covered in solution, that is basically water and salt. When heated it drains on the bottom of the air fryer basket and creates steam. That steam makes it so hard for chicken skin to crisp! I recommend draining the basket after about minutes of cooking.
- Once you drained the extra water , sprinkle wings with some baking powder. It will them to get extra crispy while cooking. Try it!
- If after the cooking time is over wings are not as crispy as you want, just set the maximum temperature and let them cook for additional 2-3 minutes. It will not dry the meat but it will help crisping the skin.
- At the last 5 minutes of cooking time spray wings with olive oil spray. Or avocado oil. If you dont have a spray, brush them with oil. It will help to crisp the skin too.

Be aware that it is much better to warm up raw frozen wings in the air fryer before seasoning them. The reason is that they can be seasoned or marinated properly and then tossed in spices, salt, or sauce. Then you can return the chicken to the air fryer to complete the cooking process.
The other option is to defrost them beforehand, rinse them very well, then season them thoroughly. Thereby, the procedure of cooking the wings in the air fryer continues as usual.
In addition, for pre-cooked chicken wings, cook them in the air fryer only. There is no need to thaw them. With your air fryer, this is the quickest way to cook them.

When done cooking, I recommend you dont just dump out the wings on to a plate or bowl as its easy to spill the leftover grease/liquid fat or drop wings on the floor.
In my experience, its easier to use some inexpensive food tongs . Theyre also helpful for keeping your hands away from the hot fryer basket.
After emptying the fryer container, add your favorite dry sub seasoning, sauce, or whatever you prefer. I recommend serving them immediately as the taste just isnt the same after reheating.
After cooking and adding the flavoring or favorite sauce you can have fresh, hot, and most of all delicious wings just like these! Restaurant-style quality thats cheaper, healthier, and in less time. Even better you can do it yourself any time you like!
