What To Do With Breaded Chicken Wings

Before You Make Chicken Wings In An Air Fryer, Watch This

Here are a few things I can tell you that you will NOT need to get the best breaded chicken wings–and I know this because I tried all of them.

I found it entirely useless to use baking powder, baking soda,or corn starch. Air frying dries the wings just fine without them. Similarly, there is zero need for olive oil or any kind of cooking spray. Chicken wings have more than enough fat without all that.

This chicken recipe is perfect to serve as an appetizer with a dip. You can also serve them as a main course along with my rosemary roasted potatoes, apple zucchini salad or with a side of cauliflower rice.

Why Use An Air Fryer

An air fryer is an incredibly easy way to cook just about anything. You place the food in a fryer-style basket and hot air rapidly circulates all around the food, making the food crisp much like deep-frying, but without the oil. You can cook anything youd make in the oven.

  • If you dont have an air fryer yet, check out these options to find one that fits your needs.

Tips To Get The Crispiest Wings

These wings are definitely restaurant worthy. This will be your new tried and true to get your wing fix, I promise. Cooking them in the Air Fryer just makes them so easy. If you havent gotten on the Air Fryer band wagon its definitely time.

  • Wings: As mentioned above, you can buy wings in two ways. They come whole or they come trimmed or broken down into parts: The drumette and the wingette. You definitely want to cook these in their parts, not whole. The whole wings are cheaper but it takes a lot of work to break them down. Its worth paying a little bit more for the work to be already done.
  • Dry: Patting the wings dry before adding the oil and seasoning will help them get even crispier. Itll remove any excess water which can slow the cooking and cause them to steam. Theyll still get cooked but wont be as crispy. Use paper towels to pat them down, or even keep them in the fridge uncovered before seasoning to help dehydrate them.
  • Turn it up: If you desire an extra crisp almost char to your wings, turn the air fryer up 20 degrees the last 2-3 minutes of cooking.
  • Stand them Up: Line the chicken wings standing upright along the sides of the air fryer. This is a great little trick if you need to fit them all in. It doesnt affect how theyre cooked, but gets them all in. Ill admit I havent tried this tip yet, but I heard about it and cant wait to try it out the next time I make these.

The Best Way To Cook Wings In The Air Fryer

Of all of the cuts of chicken, wings have the highest skin-to-meat ratio.

This makes wings ideal for air frying, because all of that skin can become deliciously crisp.

The tricky part of making crispy chicken wings in an air fryer is ensuring that the fat can fully render . If it doesnt, the wings will be soggy and greasy.

While some recipes call for making air fryer chicken wings with flour or air fryer chicken wings with baking soda to crisp them, I found this step tedious and messy.

Adding baking soda or flour also doesnt avoid the grease-factor. Heres what does

How To Make A Bigger Batch

Easy Air Fryer Chicken Wings

Frying the Wings in a single layer or separated by a double layer rack works best but you can make a bigger batch by taking some of the wings out before increasing the temperature and crisping them up in smaller batches. Just make sure not to overcrowd the basket so the air can still circulate. Watch the video below to see how I make a bigger batch in my smallest Air Fryer!

Making Air Fryer Chicken Wings In Advance

  • Giving your wings a full 24 hours to marinate will ensure optimal flavor. Leave them in a plastic storage bag overnight and simply pop in the air fryer when youre ready to eat.
  • Freezing for later. Make a batch of air fryer chicken wings. Allow them to completely cool. Line them on a baking sheet in a single layer. Pop the baking sheet uncovered into the freezer. Once completely frozen, transfer them to a freezer-safe plastic bag. Frozen wings should stay fresh for up to 3 months.

Reheat Leftovers: Reheat cooked chicken wings in an air fryer at 360°F for 4 minutes. Turn the heat to 400°F and cook for 5 more minutes. This will bring the chicken to its original crispy state.

Ingredients For Chicken Wings

Youll need the following ingredients for these chicken wings:

1 pound chicken wings If they arent cut into pieces when you buy them, you might have to remove the wing tip and detach the wing joint.

Extra virgin olive oil I like the flavor that the olive oil adds to the chicken, however you can use any cooking oil you want. It just helps crisp up the skin. If you want to spray the chicken with oil, thats fine too, just make sure you coat them well to keep the skin from drying out.

Paprika Use Spanish paprika if you have it. It gives a lovely color and nice sweet flavor. You could also use a smoked paprika if you like a smoky flavor.

Salt and pepper we keep this recipe very simple so you can decide what sauce or seasoning you want to add once theyre cooked.

How To Serve Chicken Wings

The serving possibilities for chicken wings are endless. These wings go great with just about any dipping sauce. My favorites include:

  • Ranch dressing. Add some course-ground black pepper to the ranch for additional flavor boost.
  • Blue Cheese Dressing
  • BBQ Sauce
  • Honey Garlic Sauce

Wings naturally partner with fresh celery and carrot sticks. Also, since these are herb seasoned wings, side dishes of potato salad or coleslaw are excellent choices for making them a meal.

Do You Need To Use Baking Powder When Cooking Chicken Wings In An Air Fryer

#1247 – How To Make PERFECT Air Fryer WINGS/NuWave Brio Air Fryer

Yes! Some people will tell you otherwise but thats just not what my numerous experiments has shown. Originally, use of baking powder was prompted by Serious Eats The Food Lab: In Search of the Best Oven-Fried Buffalo Wings article. A similar approach is used in the Cooks Country Oven-Fried Chicken Wings recipe. You see, baking powder is great at drawing the liquid out of chicken skin, making it significantly drier and crispier. Ive baked countless batches of chicken wings, followed by several batches in an air fryer. Every time when baking powder was used I would get a crispier skin. Feel free to experiment too, but my mind is made up.

How To Make Air Fryer Frozen Chicken Wings

Making frozen chicken wings in your Air Fryer may not require cooking skills, but there are some recommendations that you need to follow if you want to get the absolute best taste and crunchy bite.

  • Start by removing the chicken wings from the freezer bag. Inspect the wings well and discard any parts or pieces that you do not wish to cook.
  • Arrange the chicken wings in your air fryer, making sure that they are all spread in a single layer to ensure even cooking. No oil, cooking spray, or special prep is needed here you just place them inside the basket or tray, straight from the freezer.
  • Turn the Air Fryer on and cook for 18-30 minutes, depending on the crispiness you want to achieve, at 380-400 degrees F. Flipping the wings halfway through is essential, so make sure to shake the basket well or flip the wings over once your timer signals 15 minutes. Yes, we do recommend setting the timer!
  • Check the doneness and see if your wings need more time to cook. If you are cooking chicken wings different in size, you may want to transfer the crispy pieces to a plate and leave the larger wings to cook for a few extra minutes.
  • Transfer directly to a plate , add the favorite sauces or toppings, and serve. Enjoy!
  • Air Fryer Wings Cooking Time

Spread the wings in an even, single layer in the air fryer basket, leaving room on all sides.

Air fry the wings topside down for 9 minutes and then flip them over.

Continue air frying the chicken wings for 8-10 additional minutes until theyre cooked completely and crispy.

Meanwhile, melt the butter in either a microwave or on low in a small saucepan on the stove.

Combine the melted butter and the Franks Red Hot Sauce and then add the wings until coated with the sauce.

Add the wings back to the air fryer for 1-2 more minutes.

Serve immediately with blue cheese and celery sticks.

Extra Crispy Air Fryer Chicken Wings

Extra Crispy Air Fryer Chicken Wings

    October 30, 2018 by victor

These air fryer chicken wings are so good that if you have an air fryer, whip it out and make these wings ASAP. If not, go buy one now! Seriously. I am a chicken wing lover and have tried dozens of amazing recipes. This one is way up there at the top of the list. The first thing that hits you is their extra crispy, extra flavorful deep golden brown skin. Its delicious! As you bite into the wing, the second thing that hits you is the explosion of juices. These wings are probably the juiciest wings Ive ever had. They are cooked so quickly that they just dont have the time to dry out.

These wings remind me of my Extra Crispy Baked Chicken Wings. I make them in a similar way I use baking powder to draw out moisture and dry out the skin, and I use high heat and air movement to get that browning and crisping up of the skin.

The one thing I did differently in this recipe is I salted the wings and applied the seasonings before frying. Based on my experiments, salt does make chicken skin a little less crispy, but it also significantly improves browning. I now salt my wings before cooking as I like the beautiful deep golden brown color it results in.

If you have never used an air fryer before, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. I will address them one by one, starting with what I consider the most important one.

  • Is It Hard To Use An Air Fryer

Its easy to use, and once you get the hang of it youll be hooked on air frying! Air fryer ovens look similar to a toaster oven and have racks inside on which you put food. Air fryer ovens have more cooking functions and more room for food inside, but they also take up more space in your kitchen.
