Make in batches I dont know about you, but I like to eat my potatoes and fries nice and hot and crispy, right out of the fryer. Because the air fryer baskets arent generally super huge, I find it helpful to cook in batches when Im making a lot of air fryer potatoes. That way, we can eat the first round right out of the fryer and then put in more air fryer potatoes that will be ready when everyones ready for seconds.

The air fryer is a fantastic device for cooking potatoes. Theyre a healthier alternative to deep frying and theyre much more eco-friendly. However, you cant simply toss potatoes into an air fryer and expect to get the best results. You must know how to blanch them properly. Otherwise, your potatoes may not brown in the way you want, and theyll end up tasting like mush.

    The Benefits Of Blanching Potatoes

Blanching is a method of cooking that involves briefly boiling potatoes in a salt water bath. This not only helps with the blanching process, but it also makes the potatoes taste better. Before blanching, the potatoes should be scrubbed and the ends trimmed. Then, the potatoes should be placed in a pot with enough water to cover them. Bring the water to a boil, and then boil the potatoes for 20 minutes. Next, drain the potatoes and place them on a sheet pan to dry. This will take about 10 minutes. Once the potatoes are dry, sprinkle them with salt and then place them back into the same pot in which they were cooked. Heat the pot over high heat until it is very hot. While the pot is heating, fill the bottom of the pot with oil and allow it to heat up. Once the oil is hot, add the potatoes to the pot. Cook the potatoes in the oil for 5-6 minutes. This should be enough time to blanch the potatoes, but if they are not blanched enough, the blanching process can take up to 30 minutes. Remove the potatoes and drain on paper towels. Be sure to allow the potatoes to cool for at least 30 minutes before cutting them in half. These are now ready to be eaten or stored in the refrigerator.

How To Cook Frozen Roast Potatoes In The Air Fryer

    Air Fryer Baked Potatoes Recipe

Preheat the air fryer at 200C/400F for 5 mins. I like to do this as I believe it gives the potatoes a good head start as it would if oven-baked.

Transfer the frozen potatoes into the air fryer basket and cook at 200C/400F for 15 to 20 minutes depending on the size until fork-tender, golden and crispy on the outside. Shake the air fryer basket every 10 minutes to allow even cooking.

Be careful when removing the air fryer basket from the base tin so that the dripped fat does not spill on the floor or on you. It will be hot so be careful! Remove the potatoes with a tong or a fork to avoid kitchen accidents.

Season the potato as desired whilst it is still hot, serve as desired and enjoy!

Which Potatoes Are Best For The Air Fryer

Similar to these Roasted Potatoes and Slow Cooker Potato recipes, the potatoes you use in the air fryer matters. Heres what it boils down to:

    • Russets: These will air fry beautifully. They will crisp up wonderfully with a pale golden color. Their insides will be soft and fluffy with a mild flavor. Always a good choice!
    • Yukon Golds or Yellow Potatoes: These are a favorite for air frying because they will crisp up perfectly but also turn a bit deeper golden color because of the lower starch and higher sugar content. Their crisp will be a tad softer than a russets however, their insides will be creamy and full of flavor.
    • Reds: Red potatoes when roasted will turn an even darker golden brown because of their even higher sugar and lower starch content. They will be crispy coming out but soften quickly on the outside. Their insides will be creamy and soft.
    • Baby Potatoes or New Potatoes: These are not a variety or type of potato. They are regular potatoes that have been thinned from the crop early. These potatoes have a high sugar content and roast in the air fryer perfectly as well as hold their shape. Although they can be hard to find in the grocery store as they are somewhat seasonal they are usually a favorite.

    Expert Tips & Variations

    • Grate the cheese fresh. I always recommend buying blocks of cheese and shredding them at home. Pre-shredded cheese has anti-caking agents that do not allow the cheese to melt as well. Freshly shredded also has a much richer flavor.
    • Slice the potatoes thin. I recommend using a Mandoline Slicer to create uniform potato slices. This will help them to cook evenly and thoroughly.
    • Grease the foil. This prevents the cheese from sticking to the top of the foil.
    • Air fry both covered and uncovered. Covering the dish with foil is going to steam the potatoes and trap the heat better. This is necessary to fully cook the potatoes. Air frying them uncovered allows the excess moisture to evaporate and the top to brown. Both are important to make the perfect scalloped potatoes.
    • Let stand. The potatoes will be extremely hot when they come out. Allow them to cool for about 5-10 minutes before serving. This will allow the sauce to thicken.
    • Cook times may vary between different air fryer brands and models. This recipe was tested in the Cosori 5.8QT for reference.

Do I Need To Soak The Potatoes Before Air Frying

No! I usually recommend soaking potatoes before putting them in the air fryer, but for this recipe, you do not need to soak the potatoes and youll still get them nice and crispy. Soaking simply removes some of the excess starch from the potatoes which can make them crispier, but while you can soak these if you want, its still not necessary as long as you follow the tips below.

  • Be sure to brush the air fryer basket lightly with olive oil and toss the potatoes with olive oil. This prevents the breakfast potatoes from sticking to the bottom of the air fryer basket when cooking.
  • Do not overlap the breakfast potatoes in the air fryer basket. This will allow for more even cooking so that each and every potato gets nice and crispy.
  • Be sure to pre-heat the air fryer for 2 minutes. Adding the potatoes to a hot air fryer will help with the cooking process and ensure they get nice and crispy.
  • Enjoy the potatoes hot right out of the air fryer. The same as deep-fried potatoes, the longer you wait to enjoy them, the softer and less crispy they become. Enjoy these babies right out of the air fryer for the best texture!

Should I Oil Potatoes Before Baking

Some people believe that oiling the skin of a potato before baking will result in a crispier, tastier outer layer. However, studies have shown that there is no significant difference in texture or flavor when comparing potatoes that were oiled versus those that were not.

Additionally, adding oil to the potatos skin can cause it to over-brown and even potentially catch fire in the oven.

If you still prefer a crispy outer layer on your baked potatoes, try using cooking spray or brushing them with melted butter before baking. This will provide a similar effect without risking potential hazards. Overall, it is not necessary to oil potatoes before baking them. Focus on choosing high-quality

Do I Have To Use Buttermilk

Yes, you really should! Not only does it add flavor but it actually helps the chicken maintain its juiciness inside while helping to create a crispy outside. If you have time you can even let the chicken sit in the buttermilk from an hour up to overnight. If you dont have buttermilk on hand you can make your own using lemon juice or vinegar using this How to Make Buttermilk recipe.
