Air Fryer French Fries Cook Times
The amount of time you need to air fry French fries will vary based on your model and its power.
- I primarily tested these as Ninja air fryer French fries, as this is the model I own. My cook time was 8 minutes.
- Other popular air fryer models include the Phillips, the Vremi SkinnyTaste air fryer, and budget-friendly GoWISE USA.
Since models vary, I recommend you check a few minutes early, and then again towards the end of cooking time to make sure your fries do not burn.

The Many Ways To Cook A French Fry
I fully recommend cooking french fries
- Using a frying pan on the stove top
- In an air fryer
But I do not recommend trying to cook frozen fries in the microwave. They turn out mushy every single time (unless you have the ones that come in a special package and are specifically formulated for cooking in the microwave.
Do You Wanna Preheat The Air Fryer Before Cooking
That is why I always recommend preheating the air fryer before using it. You can turn it on for just 2-3 minutes before you put your food into the basket, and it will be heated to an optimal cooking temperature right when you are ready to start.
You dont want that delicious meal sitting in a cold oven while waiting for things to heat up!

Air Fryer French Fries
Say goodbye to the guilt of indulging in french fries! When you are craving that salty, crispy hot fresh french fry, air frying is the only way to go. They taste just like theyve been fried in oil, but they are not! They are so much healthier for you, and the taste is amazing. I used to bake my frozen french fries so I wouldnt have to fry them and Id feel better about serving them to my family. But the taste and texture always fell a little short. You have to try this air fryer recipe. It will change the way you eat your french fries forever.
Air Frying has changed the way I cook so many things. From steak, to chicken, to even pizza, the air fryer makes them faster, healthier and so much better. With this air fryer frozen fry recipe you get all the taste and texture of fried french fries but without all the oil and fat and so much faster than in the oven. Its a total winner in my book.
Dont Crowd The Air Fryer
This rule also applies to baking things in the oven. If you want crispy food, you cant have food touching in the air fryer as it relies on the air circulating around the food. If the air cant fully circulate, the desired crispiness wont happen. It will depend a little on the size of your air fryer and the size of your potato, but one medium potato is a full batch of french fries in the air fryer. You want to make sure that none of the fries are touching each other in the basket.
Then all thats left is to enjoy them with your family. Burger night will never be the same.

Why Soak Fries In Water Before Cooking
The soaking gives the fries their crisp texture, according to Mr. Nasr. This process removes the starch from the starches, making them more rigid and less likely to stick together when baked. It is customary for the cooks to fry them twice, blanching them until they are slightly limp in peanut oil heated to 325 degrees and then browning them again in 375 degrees of oil to give them a crisp and golden appearance.
Top Tips For Air Fryer Frozen French Fries
- You can adjust the cooking time depending on how crispy you like your fries or how thick they are. For softer or thinner fries, decrease time. For crispier or thicker fries, increase it.
- If youre using an air fryer that doesnt rotate, toss your fries very, very well midway through. Make sure the fries that are sitting on the bottom of the bowl are scooped up to the top.
- If your air fryer does rotate, be sure to check on them halfway to judge how thoroughly cooked they are.
- Do not spray too much oil, or your fries will get mushy!
- You dont have to preheat your air fryer, but be aware that your cooking time may be longer!
- Try your fries with different seasonings for a more gourmet snack. Try garlic or onion powder, seasoned salt , or chipotle powder for fries with a kick.

Can You Put Foil In An Air Fryer For Fries
There are many people who think so, but there is no real evidence to support this claim. In fact, the truth may be quite the opposite. Heres why:
1) The heat from the fryer can cause foil to ignite and create a dangerous fire. This is definitely not something you want to experience!2) Foil can also get stuck on the cooking surfaces inside of an air fryer and start creating a mess.
If this happens, its likely that your air fryer will have to be cleaned thoroughly.

Which Potato Is Best For Air Fryer French Fries
When it comes to which potato to use for air fryer French fries, you have two options: Yukon gold potatoes and russet potatoes. Each will yield a different result.
- Russet potatoes resulted in fries that were crispy outside, drier inside, and tasted most similar to fries you would eat in a restaurant.
- Yukon gold potatoes resulted in fries that were equally crispy outside, but that had a firmer, creamier inside. Thanks to their naturally buttery taste, the French fries made with Yukon golds also had a richer flavor.
While Yukon golds are my favorites for Oven Roasted Potatoes and Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes, when it came to making a healthy version of classic French fries in the air fryer, russet potatoes did the best job.
Feel free to try both potatoes and pick your favorite! And you MUST try Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries at some point too!

Can I Make My Own Fries
Yes, of course you can make your own fries from raw potatoes. The best way to get them uniform is to use a french fry cutter, like this one. This professional grade french fry cutter gives you the type of fry you would buy in a bag. They will cook at about the same rate as frozen fries.
The only thing different is that youll have to spray them with oil in order to get them crispy, because they wont already have oil on them like the store-bought ones do.

Air Fryer French Friescommon Questions
Q: Which type of potatoes are best for French fries?A: Russet potatoes are ideal for French fries, as theyre high in starch and low in moisture, which enables them to crisp up nicely.
Q: Do I have to preheat my air fryer?A: Because air fryers are much smaller than typical ovens, they heat up quickly and do not require preheating. Weve always had great results without preheating, which is consistent with general consensus for most air fryers.
Q: Why do I have to soak the sliced potatoes?A: Soaking helps to draw out some of the starch from the surface, which helps with browning evenly. Dont forget to rinse after soaking.
How Many Layers Can You Cook At Once
One of my biggest frustrations with the air fryer is that, despite the baskets large overall volume capacity, in order for certain foods to crisp properly, they need to be cooked in a single layer.
Since the surface area of the basket is small, that means you end up making a lot of batches, taking away from the air fryers quicker cook time.
To determine whether or not you could fit more fries into the air fryer at once, I tested a few different methods. Here is what I found.
- Single Layer of Potatoes. Cooking just one layer of potatoes at a time resulted in the best, crispiest fries. The downside was that I needed to make at least 4 batches, which extended the recipes total time.
- Double Layer of Potatoes. My next test was to see if I could stack the potatoes in two layers. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the double-layer fries, while not *as* crisp as the ones I cooked in a single layer, were still delightfully crispy and very satisfying. This approach also cut my number of batches in half.
- Three Layers or More. When I stacked the potatoes in three layers or more, they were noticeably less crisp and representative of fried fries. I would not recommend this method.
For us, the double layer was the perfect balance between crispiness and faster recipe time.
