What Is The Difference Between An Air Fryer And An Air Fryer Oven

Although air fryers and air fryer ovens work in the same way to cook your food, they both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Before you can consider which one to buy for your kitchen, you should ensure you understand their differences. In addition, see our ‘Air Fryer Vs. Dehydrator’ review in case you need your food to last longer.

Should You Get An Air Fryer Or An Air Fryer Toaster Oven

The style of air fryer thats right for you is going to depend on things that are specific to your household like how many people you need to feed, your budget, your available counter space, and what you want to cook with it.

In our small two-person household, a drawer-style air fryer was the best option. Thats because we already had a convection toaster oven that we loved and enough space for a second appliance.

The drawer-style air fryer is super easy to clean and great for quickly roasting veggies or making a fast batch of fries while the countertop oven is perfect for baking small batch cakes and muffins, cooking sheet pan meals for two, toasting bread, and more.

In the event that I could only have one appliance, I would probably go with an air fryer toaster oven.

While I love how easy it is to clean the drawer-style air fryer, we use our toaster oven way more its basically our main oven. Id be looking for a good toaster oven and would consider the air frying function a bonus, not the main selling point.

But if I was buying one for my sister, Id get her a drawer-style air fryer because:

At Tims office, counter space is limited so he got an air fryer oven .

The oven handles the most important jobs that everyone in the office needs it to do like reheating pizza or other lunch items, baking fries, toasting bread and bagels, and if he wants to air fry something he can!

Do you have an air fryer or air fryer oven that you love? Tell us about it in the comments!

Deep Frying And Regular Baking

Best Choice Products 11.6 Quart 1700W 8

With actual deep-frying, your food is directly immersed in hot oil. The oil completely surrounds every inch of the food, so it gets uniformly crispy. With ordinary baking, your food gets less crispy, because baking cooks by surrounding your food with hot air and air is not as good a conductor of heat as oil.

Best Countertop Convection Ovens

Most air fryer ovens are convection-powered toaster ovens, meaning that fans circulate the heat evenly throughout the cooking chamber. This allows the food to cook more quickly and evenly than it does in a traditional oven.

These straightforward, toaster-oven-style air fryers use convection heat to evenly cook and crisp food on all sides.

Why Are My Fritters Not Crispy

Simply put, fritters wont properly crisp up if the batter is too wet. Grating, salting and wringing out zucchini is key to crispy outsides and fork-tender middles. Picking smaller zucchini will also be helpful they often contain much less water than their larger counterparts. If using frozen corn, thaw and drain it prior to adding it to your batter. Are your fritters leaving a little to be desired in the crispiness department? No sweat. Increase your bake time in 1-to 2-minute increments in either the oven or air-fryer until theyve reached the desired crispiness.

Should You Get An Air Fryer Toaster Oven Or Something Else

Overall, we think air fryer toaster ovens are far more versatile than pod-shaped air fryersespecially if you have a larger household. Chichi Uguru, creator of the Air Fryer Yum blog, told us, If you have a large family, youre better off using an air fryer toaster oven because it can cook more food at once. Not only can these ovens air fry food, but they can also bake 12- or 13-inch pizzas , 9-inch cakes, pies, and more. The models we recommend can roast a whole 5- to 6-pound chicken, and even squeeze in a 5.5- or 6-quart Dutch oven , which makes them more akin to a full-size oven. Since they take only a few minutes to preheat, theyre ideal for cooking in warmer months and dont use as much energy as a full-size oven. Air fryer toaster ovens also allow you to turn off the convection fan, which is ideal when baking. The main drawbacks: Theyre often bigger and more expensive than most pod-shaped models, they require a brief preheating period, and they take a bit longer to cook food.

So Is An Air Fryer A Convection Oven

Air Fryer Toaster Oven Demo (TOA-60)

Most convection ovens can air-fry, but not all air fryers can do what a convection oven can. The main difference between an air fryer and convection oven lies in the size, with a convection oven generally having more space for cooking larger amounts of food at one time . The fan in an air fryer is located at the top of the appliance, which cooks food a little faster than the back-of-the-oven fan in a convection oven, but a convection oven doesn’t require any specialty equipment or accessories like an air fryer does.

When To Use Convection

Before diving into the many ways you can apply convection baking into your cooking routine, letâs address one important consideration: adjusting recipes for convection. Because convection cooks faster and with more heat dispersion, recipes need to be converted to avoid burning.

How do you convert cooking times for a convection oven?

  • Drop the temperature by 25 degrees.
  • Cut cooking times by 25 percent and check often.
  • With that in mind, these baking conditions are great for:

    â Proteins

    â Baked entrées

    â Multi-rack baking

Thereâs even more to discover about this innovative oven feature, which we detail in our guide to convection baking.

When To Consider A Regular Toaster Oven

Air frying is just convection baking, smartly rebranded . So any oven with convection works the same way as an air fryer: A fan circulates hot air around the food, crisping the outside in a way that mimics deep frying .

Modern air frying uses more powerful fans, but a good convection toaster oven , can deliver similar results. Generally, if you opt for a convection toaster oven over an air fryer toaster oven, youll pay a little less, and youll need to cook your food a little bit longer to get comparably crispy results. You also wont get features like a specific air fry setting or basket, but those arent necessary to get extra-crispy results.

If air frying isnt a top priority but a smaller footprint or lower price is, you might just want a small, regular toaster oven . Wed recommend the Panasonic FlashXpress . It wont blast food with hot air, but it can still bake relatively quickly and provide crispy results due to its small oven cavity, which is similar in size to a pod-shaped air fryer.

    What Is Convection Baking

Convection baking introduces a fan to the interior of an oven, allowing hot air to be blown around and onto the food. The force of the air thus transfers more heat to the surface of the food, so that it produces more crispiness than an ordinary oven .

Note that although many oven ranges offer a convection setting, for this discussion, we’re solely comparing countertop convection ovens with air fryers.

What Is An Air Frying Oven

By now, were all relatively well-versed in the world of air frying, including which air fryers are the best, what recipes you should cook in them and potentially, most importantly whether or not they really are the secret to healthier eating.

Overall, an air fryer functions by crisping and cooking food with circulated, heated air with little-to-no oil compared to typical deep frying. While countertop air fryers are great for quickly preparing smaller batches of food or cooking without heating up your kitchen, they’re not ideal for big-batch cooking or air frying an entire turkey for example. This is where an air fryer oven comes into play. You can achieve the same results you love from a countertop air fryer in your oven which gives you another level of versatility.

    What Is An Air Fryer

An air fryer refers to a smaller version of a convection oven. There are two models of an air fryer which include an air fryer oven and an air fryer basket. Both models work the same way, though the various parts of the devices may be in different places.

The temperatures may be different for the two devices, and they may also differ in their food placement.

An air fryer may be an excellent option if you wish to cook your food quickly. It works by circulating hot air around your food.

This enables your food to cook without using oil. Most air fryers have the heating element placed above the food.

Additionally, you may not need to preheat the oven like convection ovens. As such, it saves you a lot of time in addition to ensuring healthy eating.

    Are Air Fryers Energy Efficient

Air Fryer Oven Battle! Ninja vs Cuisinart vs GoWISE USA – Chicken Wings

Air fryers vary in their energy efficiency, but it is possible to calculate how much energy an appliance will use, which in turn will help you cost up the impact it’ll have on your bills. Here’s how:

Take the appliance’s wattage and multiply it by the gadget’s hours of use per day, then divide the total by 1000. The result will be the appliance’s daily kilowatt-hour .

The cost per kilowatt-hour will vary depending on your energy tariff and area. If you have a smart meter installed at home, you’ll be able to see the cost per use during cooking without having to calculate it.

One of the many useful qualities of air fryers is the countertop size. These gadgets are much faster to heat up and designed to circulate hot air efficiently, meaning food can be cooked much quicker than in a traditional oven. For smaller quantities and specific ingredients, air fryers will be switched on for considerably less time, which equates to less electricity consumption.

This easy-to-use, easy-to-clean air fryer oven from the makers of the Instant Pot is a great choice for families. You can cook on up to two racks at once or cook a chicken rotisserie-style.
