“I’ve been using this everyday,” another said of their unit, adding that they wish they had “pulled the trigger” on their purchase sooner.

Although there are lots of positive reviews for the Ultrean 4.2 Quart model, there are some shoppers who have said the machine is rather loud to operate, and that the machine may be too big for kitchens with minimal storage. Another thing to note is that the tray may be removable, but there are other components of the machine that need to be washed by hand.

What To Consider Before You Buy An Air Fryer

  • Air fryers come in various styles and sizes. In general, basket units are easy to use and great for the basics. If you want a model that can do-it-all and then some, consider an air fryer toaster oven instead.
  • Many air fryers are multi-functional. You can find air fryer-toaster oven combo units and even pressure cookers with an air fry function. Depending on your space and how you plan to use your air fryer, a combo unit could be right for you.
  • Prices vary. Air fryers can range in price from around $50 to upwards of $300. We’ve found that many of the best air fryers cost around $100 and are often on sale.
  • Make the most of your air fryer with accessories. Like the beloved pressure cooker, air fryer accessories can help make air fryers more versatile.

Are Air Fryers Healthy

“Air frying use significantly less oil than deep frying and pan frying, so it can provide a lower-calorie and lower-fat alternative that still delivers a crisp texture,” says Stefani Sassos, MS, RDN, CDN.“But air fryers are only as healthy as the foods you chose to cook in them. They wont magically remove saturated and trans fats from your meals.

To get the most health benefits out of your air fryer, Sassos recommends using it as a vessel to add more veggies and lean proteins to your diet. One of her favorites uses for it is air frying frozen veggies. “I couldn’t believe how easy it was the first time I tried it,” she says.

Breville Joule Oven Air Fryer Pro

If youre looking for the biggest bang for your buck, the Cosori Air Fryer Max XL is hard to beat . This touchscreen digital air fryer is one of our favorite basket-style units and the one Rachel Gurjar used to test her air-fryer recipes . Its a spacious 5.8-quart air fryer thats both larger and more affordable than most other basket air fryers, so you can get a double portion of French fries in the frying basket at once. The removable basket is nonstick and dishwasher safe, and its easy to unplug and stash this thing under the counterideal if you have limited counter space. Unlike with the Breville Smart Oven, you can also fry foods right in the basket without worrying about dripping and smoking fat. Bonus: Its equipped with a “shake” reminder to ensure all of your chicken wings, mozzarella sticks, and brussels sprouts come out super crispy. When the alarm sounds, just pull the basket out and give it a shake to make sure the goods are all evenly exposed to the circulating air.

The downsides: The basket is enclosed, meaning youll have to keep opening it to check for doneness, which will release some heat. And as a single-purpose appliance, its just not as versatile as the multitasking Breville oven.

How We Tested Air Fryers

Best Air Fryer 2022: Cheap vs Expensive!

What is the first thing you think of when you consider air fryers? Chips, of course, so our homemade fries test was crucial.

The key to crisp fries was to peel and soak the potatoes in cold water for half an hour to remove starch, before drying thoroughly. We used Maris Piper potatoes for all.

We looked at the manuals for each model and followed their directions for cooking temperature, time and the quantity of oil needed. If the type of oil wasn’t specified them we used vegetable.

Anything from the size of the cut to the variety of potato can make a difference here, so itâs always good to gauge things halfway through the time. But for the purpose of the test, we shook ingredients only when prompted too and scored the appliance based on its performance.

We tested the air fryers using set criteria and scored each one on the following core areas out of five. The average of all determined the overall star rating they achieved:

Quality of foodTo ensure fairness, we initially cooked chips in every fryer we tested. We looked at how evenly they âfriedâ and whether they were brown and crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.

Ease of useNo-one wants to resort to a YouTube video to work out how to use a new gadget. We looked for fryers with clear, simple instructions, so we could get them out of the box and cooking our dinner as quickly as possible. Fryers also scored highly if the icons or control buttons were easy to use and intuitive.

Different Types Of Air Fryers

There are a few different types of air fryers to choose from, but all of them work in a similar way. You can choose between two main types:

Drawer air fryers have inserts with handles that can be easily lifted out of the cooking unit and shaken up to evenly cook your fries or chicken without having to turn using a spatula.

They are a very popular design because they often have an insert that elevates your food to allow air to circulate inside the air fryer basket as it cooks. You can sometimes even lift this filter out of the main basket, which contains oil and juices as they drip away from your food, to make sure none of it ends up on your plate.

Toaster oven air fryers are the second and less common type. We feature many of them in our guide to toaster ovens because they come with layered designs that can be used to bake and roast as well as air fry.

Some even come with rotisserie functions that can be used to cook kebabs or whole chickens, but because they don’t have a drawer that can be easily pulled out, they can be more fiddly to operate, but they most closely resemble a smaller-scale oven in our experience.

What To Know About Nonstick Pans

If you follow a few specific rules, your pan just might last a lifetime!

  • Never use nonstick cooking spray. These sprays are not compatible with non-stick pans and create a buildup on the surface of the pan that, over time, is impossible to remove. If you need to use fat, use a minimal amount of butter or oil.
  • Skip the dishwasher. Even if a brand says its pan is dishwasher-safe, stick to hand-washing. The harsh soaps and high temperature and pressure of dishwashers can dull and damage the coating of the pan that is essential to maintaining its nonstick magic.
  • Dont use over high heat on the stove. There are a few pans that you can use over high heat, but, in general, low to medium low heat is recommended for nonstick pans. This is not only to keep them functioning properly, but also to keep them from releasing any harmful odors or chemicals.
  • Never heat an empty pan. This can release that awful odor that can be dangerous, and the high heat may be damaging to the pan.

Other Air Fryers We Tested

Crux Marshmello: This compact 3-quart air fryer did well in testing and the cooking basket was easy to clean. But I wasn’t a fan of the control panels, which sport cutesy LED images in place of words, and it wasn’t abundantly clear what each one was for.

The Crux air fryer performed well but the control panel was a little too cute for its own good.

Phillips Essential Compact Air Fryer: I didn’t have any major complaints with this 4-quart model, and it’s a good value at under $120. That said, it was less powerful when air frying chicken wings and other foods.

PowerXL Air Fryer: This is another small air fryer that did well in testing, but I prefer the controls and sleek design of the more budget-friendly Gourmia 2-quart.

Instant Vortex: One popular option is the Instant Vortex. It’s priced in line with the other air fryers in this group. The Vortex is made by the same company that created the groundbreaking Instant Pot electric pressure cooker. Despite that, though, I wasn’t blown away by its results. Chicken wings and fried chicken were acceptable, not incredible, and less juicy than what other fryers produced. My Brussels sprouts ended up overdone too. And frozen fries were done but cooked unevenly.

What Should You Look For In An Air Fryer

Power and size are the most important factors in finding the best air fryer for you. The Ninja air fryer that we liked best has 1,550 watts of power but you can expect an oven with slightly less oomph to also deliver solid results.

The best size for an air fryer is relative and will vary based on your personal requirements. A 4-quart model should be enough for most households and can easily hold five or six chicken thighs at once. There are also air fryers as large as 10 quarts that make cooking for large groups easier and some as small as 2 quarts that are perfect for singles and couples. Other considerations include how intuitive the interfaces, dials and controls are as well as the build and durability of each air fryer.

How Much Oil Do I Need To Use In My Air Fryer

While most recipes call for a teaspoon or half a teaspoon of oil. We found we got a more even coating on some foods by decanting our choice of oil into a small spray bottle and using that. Never use one-calorie oil spray, which is a step too far in the diet stakes we found, producing nasty, chewy fries.

Most of the machines we tested couldnt be used with fattier meats such as sausages or chicken or duck with the skin on. This sometimes results in meats being drier on the outside. This was where a spray oil came in handy and definitely improved results if not making them as good as if theyd been fried.
