How To Make Air Fryer Fried Chicken
First, you will want to your chicken. I use a mixture of half buttermilk and half hot sauce. I learned the hot sauce trick from my mother-in-law. The buttermilk helps keep the chicken juicy on the inside and the hot sauce adds flavor to the chicken. Dont worry about it being spicy, it wont be. You can marinate in the refrigerator anywhere from 1 hr to as long as 24 hours.
Combine flour, italian seasoning, seasoning salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper. I use a whisk to ensure that my flour is fully seasoned.
Grab a pair of tongs and remove one piece of chicken from the buttermilk mixture, allowing it to drain off a bit, and place it in the flour mixture and use the tongs to make sure the chicken pieces are fully coated.
Place a piece of parchment paper with holes in the Air Fryer. This has been my best solution for not having breaded fried chicken stick to the bottom of the Air Fryer. Just make sure that you dont put the parchment paper down without food on top. If it there is no food to hold it down, it could fly up into the heating coils on top of the air fryer and start a fire.
Place your floured chicken piece on top of the parchment paper. Make sure the chicken pieces are not overlapping or touching. The more space the better.
What Oils Should Not Be Used In Air Fryer
Technically you can use just about any oil in an air fryer, however, oils with lower smoke points will likely start smoking before you reach the target temperature. This smoke gives off a âburntâ smell and can affect the quality of the food youâre cooking. Examples of oils with low smoke points include olive oil, walnut oil, unrefined coconut oil, and good olâ butter. There are oils that are much better suited for use in the high temperatures of an air fryer, as weâll discuss below.

What Is Smoke Point Of A Oil
Before we discuss about the oils, we should know what is the smoke point of the oil. At which temperature the oil starts to evaporate and break down into monosaturated fats. These fats start to produce smoke which is called its smoke point. Every oil has its own smoke points and differs from each other. Some oils have high smoke points like olive oil, avocado oil, canola oil, peanut oil, etc. Some oil has a very low smoke point like palm oil, canned oil.
We all know the air fryer cooks food at high temperatures using its rapidly circulating hot air. The inner temperature of the air fryer can reach 400°F-450°F while cooking. If you use low smoke point oil then it will make smoke inside your air fryer and burn your food. So using non-refined, unprocessed, and high smoke point oils are the best choice for cooking in the air fryer.
