The Term Air Fryer Is Just A Marketing Ploy For Technology That Has Existed For Decades

Should You Get an Air Fryer or an Air Fryer Toaster Oven? | Gear Heads

This is a plea, not in condescension, not out of derision or scorn, but for the sake of all things honest and decent in the worldwide web of consumerism. Don’t fall for marketing ploys that clutter your kitchen.

Convection cooking has been around since the early 1900s, and in home kitchens since at least 1945 in the form of your trusty ol’ toaster oven.

With the addition of a wire tray and a metal sheet pan, any decent convection toaster oven will achieve what an air “fryer” can and more. It can bake, roast, and broil, and it can even toast! Oh, the novelty! Further, thanks to the internal fan that prevents hot and cold spots, a convection toaster oven arguably works better than the regular oven.

Is An Air Fryer Healthier Than A Toaster Oven

I am not a nutritionist or a scientist, so I cant give you any professional advice here. But, from my laymans point of view, I think both these kitchen appliances would be similar when it comes to health. You might even argue that a toaster oven is healthier, as you can cook mostly without adding any oil. Whereas, for a lot of food in the air fryer, it is recommended to spritz the surface with oil to help it get crispier.

Both air fryer vs toaster oven is very popular kitchen appliances used for cooking, baking, and roasting. Both of them come in different shapes and sizes and both have their own specific advantages and disadvantages. So the question is: Air Fryer vs Toaster Oven which one should you choose? Here I will discuss the basic differences between these two types of ovens so that you can make your decision easier when purchasing an oven for your kitchen.

Pros and Cons of Air Fryer vs Toaster Oven

Air Fryer

Air Fryers are becoming more popular among family kitchens. These are some of the benefits and drawbacks of using an air fryer that you should know before buying one for your kitchen.

Pros of Air Fryers:

  • Many of the models come with a built-in timer and automatic shutoff, which comes in handy while cooking different kinds of food.
  • With preheating time of fewer than 10 minutes, these devices cook your food faster than conventional ovens that take more than 20 minutes to get ready for cooking. Moreover, they use lesser energy compared to oven or stovetop cooking methods.
  • Since no oil is required when using an air fryer it reduces the consumption of extra calories from oil and other sauces by almost 80%.
  • This makes Air Fryer vs Toaster oven food healthier than deep-frying and grilling/barbecuing where many dishes can taste better but are not healthy at all. If you dont like using oil, then an air fryer is the best option for you.

Air Fryer And Multicooker: An Air Fryer That Does It All

These are the most advanced and versatile air fryers and they do a whole lot more than air fry. Think Instant Pot but with an air fryer function as well. Ninja’s Foodi multicooker and Instant Pot Duo Crisp are two popular models, and if you want an air fryer and multicooker or pressure cooker but don’t have a lot of kitchen space to relinquish, one of these is a great option. I’ve used the 6-quart Duo Crisp a bunch and find it works really well, turning out some of the most delicious fried chicken ever

These models generally retail for about $175 to $250

If you already have an Instant Pot, you can buy an Instant Pot air fryer lid to attach or a Mealthy which will clamp on top and air fry food down below.

The Duo Crisp is a powerful air fryer but it’s also a pressure cooker, slow cooker, rice cooker and more.

    Air Fryer Vs Microwave

Some microwaves are beginning to offer air fry settings or other features that help achieve crispy, fried-like results. One of the main differences between these two appliances is that an air fryer or countertop oven circulates dry heat that helps remove moisture from the exterior of foods, while microwaves use electromagnetism to accelerate particles within the food.

If you are looking for optimal results on your air fried creations, choosing an appliance specially designed for the task usually cant be beat. However, just as with countertop ovens or full-sized ovens, most types of microwaves generally offer more functions than a standalone air fryer. Depending on how often you plan to make air fryer recipes, you could opt for just a microwave with cripsing features. Select KitchenAid® microwaves feature Crispwave Microwave Technology and a Crisper Pan that can be used to brown, crisp, and pan-fry foods.

The appeal of an air fryer is obvious. With a few teaspoons of oil, you can make crispy golden chicken, french fries, tater tots, and moreall of which are far healthier for you than deep-frying because you use so little oil.

But what if you dont want another appliance eating up space on your countertop? Or you want to air fry in larger portions than the typical air fryer will hold? The answer may already be in your kitchen.

More and more range ovens, wall ovens, and toaster ovens that have convection now come with air fry settings. Convection, which constantly circulates hot air using one or more fans, is the same technology behind countertop air fryers. So we tried out a few to see how well they work. Below are tips for getting the best results from each, plus a closer look at the top appliances from Consumer Reports’ tests that can air fry.

    What About Using A Full

For the record, you can get similar air fried results when cooking food in a full-size oven with convection. But because a full-size oven is so much larger than a toaster oven or an air fryer, it takes much longer to preheat and can take longer to cook food. The Cuisinart TOB-260N1 toaster oven preheats almost immediately, making it the better choice if speed is part of what appeals to you about an air fryer.

Even Our Reporters Who Test Air Fryers Don’t Really Like Them

Our job is to tell you what to buy, and in some instances, we’re assigned to review products we ourselves would never buy. We still consider, test, and review these products with every bit of the respect we give all products and services. At the end of the day, you’re going to buy what you’re going to buy and that’s that. We respect your choice.

But the kindest thing our reporters, Jen Gushue and James Brains, who have tested dozens of the things, have to say about air fryers is this: “The results are more like oven roasting at a high heat still a delicious end result, but you won’t fool anyone into thinking you just pulled those chicken wings out of a deep fryer.”

    What About Convection Toaster Ovens

Convection Toaster Ovens employ the same heating mechanism as Toaster Ovens but are supercharged by a fan.

Convection Toaster Ovens also Employ a Fan for Convection Heating, but Their Size is Larger and they Do Not Use a Confined Basket to Cook the Food Up Rapidly. Source: Oster

We established earlier that Air Fryers also primarily use the convection technique to cook the food. This leads us to the next question: how is an Air Fryer different from a convection toaster oven?

Basically, both the air fryers and the convection toaster ovens use a fan in order to circulate the air inside. This results in even as well as faster cooking.

However, an Air Fryer circulates the heat much more rapidly thanks to its more powerful fans. Furthermore, it includes a basket that allows a small amount of food to fit inside that is often stacked together.

The smaller and more confined space in an Air Fryer allows the fan to cook by focus heating in a small space.

The fans facilitate the circulation of warm air inside the oven.

The Pros To Getting A Small Pod

Over the past few years, weve received some strongly worded feedback about our decision not to recommend a pod-shaped air fryer in this guide. Though we stand behind this decision for the reasons outlined above, we do understand that there are a couple of reasons why someone may prefer getting a small, pod-shaped air fryer over a larger toaster oven. The most obvious reason is lack of space: The pod-shaped models hog less room on a kitchen counter. Smaller households that plan to make only one or two portions of food at a time may also find a larger machine to be superfluous.

If a pod-shaped air fryer is conducive to your space and lifestyle, by all means get one. The Philips Premium Airfryer HD9741/96 is the best pod-shaped model weve tested. It performed exactly the same as the model we used to recommend, the now-discontinued Philips Avance Collection Airfryer HD9641/96. Little has changed between the two models, according to the Philips representative we spoke tothe company made slight upgrades to the internal components, and the icon on the cooking presets button has a new symbol.

Like its predecessor, the Philips Premium has a small footprint and an easy-to-use interface. When filled to capacity, it also cooked food more evenly than other models of the same style, though we still discovered a handful of underdone fries and some soggy patches on fish sticks and chicken fingers. It does, however, maintain its internal temperature well.
