What Type Of Air Fryers Are There

How To Choose An Air Fryer | Picking The Right Air Fryer For You
  • Basket style with heating elements: tall, slim air fryers feature a main unit with heating elements and fans. These have slide-out baskets or trays that slot into place inside. As they tend to have a smaller cooking area than oven-style fryers, in testing we found even results were more likely if the cooking was paused occasionally to rearrange or toss the food around. Some fryers will cut out automatically when you do this, some will need to be paused if you want accurate timings.
  • Rotisserie air fryers: these are designed to produce evenly browned but moist cooked chickens, roasted much quicker than in the oven. Plus, thanks to the nifty interior lights, they’re a real crowd-pleaser for entertaining. Chip rotisserie baskets toss raw potatoes within these that allow heat to reach every nook and cranny for a crisp finish.
  • ‘Mini ovenâ types: these models use convection or fan technology to cook food on flat, slide-in trays. As well as roasting, their extra air frying functions circulate hot air around the food for more efficient crisping. These took up the space of an average-sized microwave. Some may also include rotisserie elements.
  • Interior paddles: The Tefal model we looked at has an interior paddle â its stirring motion keeping the food moving around a doughnut-shaped tray. Unlike âbasketâ models, the oil stayed in the pan rather than draining away, so sauces, rice or even casserole-type recipes could be used here.

How Big Should An Air Fryer Be About A Quart Per Person But Bigger Isn’t Always Better

If you’re cooking for one or two people a 2- or 3-quart air fryer should be large enough. From there, I would suggest adding a quart of capacity for every person that you’re regularly cooking for. So, if you plan to air fry for five people on a regular basis, spring for a 5-quart model.

Size matters when it comes to air fryer prowess but maybe not in the way you expected. A smaller air fryer means food is going to get blasted faster and more often than inside a larger model where the air has further to travel and more time to lose heat. I’ve found that small and powerful air fryers including the Magic Bullet 2-5-quart model and Instant Pot’s Duo Crisp work exceptionally well and very quickly.

The smaller air fryers mean less overall capacity so you may have to cook in batches.

I find that smaller air fryers like Magic Bullet’s 2-5-quart model do an excellent job but the trade-off is less cooking space.

Using medium chicken thighs as a unit measurement, a 2.5-quart air fryer can fit three thighs. A 5-quart model will comfortably fit six thighs and so on. If you spring for a hybrid oven with multiple racks, you can cook as many as 10 or 12 chicken thighs at once, but it will take longer than with a smaller air fryer

Now, there are whole new categories of air fryers. While the original form remains available, there are air fryer toaster ovens, air fryer Instant Pots, and even dual-drawer air fryers. So the question becomes: Which air fryer is right for you?

Ultimately, the type of air fryer you need is all about what you are going to do with it. Some people with limited kitchen space may be using their air fryer as a replacement oven. It may be their only appliance, so they want it to do a lot.

For others, crisping up fries or chicken wings is the extent of their air fryer need. They have specific recipes in mind, and beyond that, they have other appliances they can use. A Few Thoughts On The Hybrid Ovens That Didnt Make The Cut

How to Choose The Best Air Fryer for Your Home? in 2021

The Cuisinart Digital Air Fryer Toaster Oven: This hybrid convection oven and air fryer wasnt terrible and it certainly had one of, if not the most powerful, air fry functions. That proved to be a blessing and curse since some of the food I cooked burned on the edges and cooked unevenly I think due in part to the high-octane super convection fan. This air fryer oven also had my least favorite interface, and I found myself mashing my fingers on the dials and buttons in frustration at times just hoping Id get to the right setting since it never seemed to do what I wanted with ease. Its also not cheap and thus not an oven Id recommend.

Calphalon Precision Air Fry Oven: The Calphalon scored high marks in the toast test with an even browning, but thats about where the accolades ended. This oven was slow to preheat, had trouble holding a consistent temperature and the air fry function was among the weakest. It also has no internal light, which most of them do. I admittedly do like the look of it and the interface is elegant and simple to use. This oven can also be had for about $150, so it is among the more budget-friendly options.

Are Air Fryers Healthy

In the Real Food world, this is sort of a trick question.

Is fried food healthy? It depends on how its fried and what type of fat you use.

Is using an Air Fryer healthier? It depends on your bio-individual needs and what type of fat you use.

Either way you look at it, the important factor is the fat. Are you using healthy fats like avocado oil, coconut oil, lard, and tallow, or are you using processed vegetable oils?

There is no harm in cooking with less fat by using an Air Fryer. But you do have to use healthy fats no matter what cooking method you choose.

So if an air fryer is like a convection oven and a convection oven is similar to a toaster oven, do you actually need an air fryer toaster oven? Maybe not, but it depends on if the air fryer toaster oven has any features that you aren’t already getting from your air fryer and if those are features you actually intend to use.

“Steer away from combo air fryers whose secondary appliance does repetitive functions,” says Nick Drewe, CEO and founder of Wethrift.

If your biggest concern about purchasing an air fryer is devoting precious counter space to yet another appliance, then you might be a good candidate for a combination air fryer and toaster oven.

“While this appliance is bigger than the standard toaster oven, it does allow you to have one appliance on your counter that performs multiple functions quite well, including toasting, baking small foods, and, of course, air frying,” says Emily Paster, author of Epic Air Fryer Cookbook.

The biggest difference between basket style air fryers and air fryer ovens is how they are configured. “With a basket style air fryer, you can shake the food around in the basket to flip things over. With an air fryer oven, you’ll need to flip foods by hand,” Laurence says. Often, however, you’ll find you don’t need to flip at all because they cook quite evenly with the air moving all around the food.

Air Fryer Buying Guide

Deep-fried food is delicious, but its not the healthiest option when youre hungry for a snack or meal. Because deep frying involves dipping your food in oil, it can add calories and fat to everything you make. Thankfully, there is a healthier way to get that deep-fried flavour and crispy coating. All you need is an air fryer. It will take everything from chicken strips to wings or French fries and make it crispy and delicious, and it uses nothing more than hot air to do so.

Air Fryers Usually Use A Basket Not A Pan Or Tray

Theres no point in having brilliant airflow if something gets between it and the food youre trying to cook. Thats why instead of sticking your food on a baking sheet, most air fryers provide some kind of mesh basket. That means the air reaches everywhere, and reduces the likelihood of getting a soggy bottom on what are supposed to be crisp fried foods.

How To Clean Your Air Fryer

How difficult an air fryer is to clean can be a breaking point for a lot of people when they’re trying to decide how to choose an air fryer. If it’s hard to clean, you simply won’t use it. This is where footprint also comes into play. If the footprint is smaller, the amount of air fryer you have to clean is also smaller.

    Different Types Of Air Fryer

There are two main types of air fryer mechanic and electronic. Both of them have the same cooking result, but their possibilities are different.

Mechanical air fryers have two switches. One regulates the cooking time and the other sets the temperature. There is only one fan speed. These devices are simple and reliable. They have an acceptable cost.

Air fryer with electronic control is more expensive. Because they are smart. When pulling the basket out of the unit, the device automatically turns off. As soon as you insert the basket back, the display lights up and the air fryer is ready for use. There are up to ten automatic programs in the menu with selected temperature and cooking time.

Capacity of an air fryer pot is a reasonable question from the category which one to buy? There are capacities of 10 liters and less, and 11-18 liters. The larger the capacity, the more food you can cook at a time. But here you should approach the choice wisely:

    • For a small family, a large device is expensive. It uses a lot of electricity
    • Bulky basket is uncomfortable to wash, and its easy to drop it from your hands.

How Did We Choose The Best Air Fryer

When testing, Homes & Gardens took into account the following factors:

Noise: The noise of an air fryer can impact your ability to use it. Perhaps you like to cook while listening to the TV, or you live in a smaller home and the noise of an air fryer running would distract you as you work. If an air fryer is noisy, we make a note of it.

Speed: Air fryers promise to speed up cooking times, so when testing them we used standardized recipes to see how long they will take to cook classic recipes. While potato fries would typically take around 25 minutes in the air fryer, the speediest air fryers we tested have taken as little as 12 minutes to make crisp, evenly-cooked fries.

Looks: It’s going in your kitchen counters, so it has to look the part. You might not mind a less attractive air fryer as much as some other users, but any bulky features or unattractive elements such as smudging or busy display panels were noted during testing.

Cleaning: Cleaning an air fryer should be easy. Most have baskets that can go in the dishwasher, and it’s rare to find on without a non-stick inside. If we ran into any difficulties cleaning, we marked it down.

Some of the air fryers in our guide have been reviewed on other Future Homes websites, but they have all been reviewed by the same Editor, meaning she can still bring you all her inside knowledge even if you can’t click through to read the full review on Homes & Gardens.

What Should You Look For In An Air Fryer

    Space

First, make sure you know how much bench space you have available. If you make chips regularly, you might want to leave it out permanently. The two basic shapes are tall and fat and short and slightly fatter . Be aware that top-opening models could be out of the running if you have restricted space above the bench, as the lid needs to be opened upwards. If you’re planning to pack your air fryer away after use, look for a compact size with a uniform shape to slot easily into a cupboard.

    Claimed capacity or volume

Take the manufacturer’s claimed measurements with a grain of salt as the claimed capacity or volume can be misleading. Some manufacturers measure the whole space inside the air fryer and not the actual useable capacity. A ’10-litre’ model may only be able to cook about 500g of chips and a ‘2500-gram’ model won’t actually be able to accommodate that weight of food.

    Cleaning

Air fryer parts are reasonably easy to clean and fit into a domestic sink. Most parts are dishwasher-safe, but they’re also easily cleaned by hand if they have a non-stick coating.
