The form factor , in the shape of a large egg, made the new product friendly and approachable, and also facilitated ease of cleaning. .

In the intervening decade, the air fryer has come to rival the Instant Pot as the new, super popular appliance changing how we do things in the kitchen. Despite the name, these appliances have proved extremely versatile. Far from being a single purpose appliance for frying food, air fryers can cook pretty much anything without the need for oil.

Not exactly. It all comes down to what you’re cooking in your air fryer.

You can use it to cook similar things as you would in a normal oven, such as grilled meats and vegetables and homemade chips. But if you’re cooking pre-packaged frozen foods that are highly processed, it’s not going to be a healthier option.

And although air-fried foods are better than deep-fried foods in that they use much less oil, it’s no different from using oil to roast or grill in a conventional oven.

“It’s just smart marketing to make people think they can get the same results as deep frying without all the oil used, but this is not the case,” says Fiona. “You need oil to give the flavour and texture to the food to call it fried.”

It’s not a deep fryer

She also warns against using your air fryer as you would a deep fryer. Wet, homemade batters will slip right through the basket and off the food. But there are a few traditionally fried foods, such as doughnuts, that can be made in an air fryer. They may not be exactly like their fried counterparts, but they will be somewhat better for you.

Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro

If you have a large family and a few hundred dollars of discretionary income on hand, Id look at the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro. Its got the largest form factor of any air fryer, and resembles the offspring of a toaster oven and a Hummer. One advantage of this is that the Breville can replace, rather than sit next to, your current toaster. So if your Black and Decker is on its last legs, this might be a reasonable purchase even from an economic perspective.

The Breville also rocks from a health perspective no plastic in sight, except for the exterior handles. Your food will be in contact only with a metal mesh fryer tray, a coated metal cookie tray, or a pizza rack.

And in terms of volume, it cant be beat. You can get a lot of stuff on a single mesh fryer tray. And you can buy extra ones, to stack up to four at a time.

The downside of the Breville is that it doesnt give you the same air fried experience that youll get from a smaller basket-type appliance. Food will turn out similarly cooked to those in a regular convection oven than one of the other air fryer models described below.

Small Volume For Large Meals

It is very difficult to cook a large meal with an air fryer.

Sure, you can do batches of food to get more cooked. However, this takes much longer to do and might not be practical for large gatherings and meals.

You can even cook different types of food at the same time! But a lot of times you cant due to different cooking temperatures and cooking times.

Something like an air fryer oven , convection oven or deep fat fryer might be faster and better for large meals.

What Are The Pros Of Air Frying

Having talked a lot about air fryers and the whole process involved in air frying, it is only important that we discuss a bit about the part of the numerous benefits involved in air frying. By now you already know that air fryers, just like every other product you will come across in the market have their positives and negatives. Some of the most glaring advantages of air frying include:-

What Is Air Frying

First, a quick explanation of what air frying is and isnt. They dont actually fry food at all. They are more like a self-contained convection oven than a deep fat fryer. Most units have one or more heating elements, along with a fan or two to circulate the hot air. These appliances quickly heat and circulate the hot air around and through the food in the tray.

This cooking method takes advantage of the heat and the drying effect of the air to cook foods quickly, leaving them crisp and browned on the outside but still moist inside. While the results can be similar to using a deep fryer, they are not identical.

What Do Air Fryers Cost

Now that there is such a huge demand for air fryers, prices of many brands have come way down. Unfortunately, the market is also now flooded with super cheap models from unknown makers. Some of them may work fine and hold up for a while. Others are a complete waste of money.

You also now have a range of sizes from which to choose, and naturally, the larger models cost more.

Depending on the brand and size, you can expect to pay anywhere from about $75 to just over $300. For quality, performance, and durability, we dont recommend any of those that sell for less than $50.

If you want top of the line look at Philips models. They are the most expensive, but in my experience theyre worth every penny. For all the details you can read my review of the HD9641 model where I explain why I think Philips is the best.
