An Air Fryer Uses Less Energy Than A Big Oven Here’s How Much
The answer won’t be the same for everyone since energy costs vary by state in the US. Oven efficiency also varies and newer models tend to use less gas or electricity. For this exercise, we’ll use some averages and estimates to assess how much you can potentially save if you fire up the air fryer instead of the oven. Oh, and saving money on energy is just one of many reasons we think air fryers are a worthwhile investment. More on that in a bit.
Faqs About Stove And Brick Air Fryer
What Is the Warranty on This Appliance?
1-year replacement of the product.
Does This Recipe Require Oil?
Yes, most things require about a teaspoon of oil until they have any fat. For example, frozen French fries take around a teaspoon of oil. We did not use any and removed the skin from the skillet. The results were not great.
Which Place Would You Put the Oil?
You do not. In some of the recipes, I’ve made, I haven’t used oil. I have used pam to ensure that food doesn’t stick. We found a recipe for fried chicken. The chicken was sprayed with olive oil and peppermint oils. The chicken turned out fantastic, as you can see.
This Retractable Cable Is Why?
It doesn’t have retractable cables.

Cooking for a family can be tough. Especially this year, as many households are cooking up to 200% more meals at home than last year. If you’re looking to create family meals, that are more healthy than takeout and guilt-free, consider a stove with air fry mode.
Last year I visited a friends house to watch a football game. As I entered the kitchen I was greeted with the familiar aroma of football fan favorites including chicken wings, french fries, nachos, doughnuts, and a whole bunch of other fun snacks. When I asked where they got their takeout, they led me over to a giant countertop appliance, called an air fryer.
We love it! I listened to my friend pitch the features of his air fry oven. Plus, its great for the kids’ foods, so easy.
Air fry is essentially a supercharged convection mode that circulates hot air throughout the oven to deliver all the flavor and a crispy texture. It’s a great way to enjoy healthier and delicious meals without adding oil, grease, and fats typically used to fry foods. You can expect perfect browning on the outer edges and a satisfying crunch every time.
An air fryer is a true convection oven with a heating element designed to circulate hot air throughout the oven. This supercharged convection system delivers faster, more even than multi-rack baking results.
Today you can get air fry in one of two ways. You can buy a countertop air fry appliance or you could buy a stove with a built-in air fry mode.

How Much Energy Does An Air Fryer Use
Air fryers are electric appliances, so we can use the same methodology as above to find the operating cost. The wattage for air fryers varies and larger models will use more energy, but a standard 4-quart fryer such as this Ninja uses about 1,500 watts.
Considering that’s exactly half the wattage pull of the average full-size oven from our stove calculation, we can project that the air fryer will use roughly half as much electricity to operate.
Using New York’s electricity prices, we safely say a standard 4-quart air fryer will cost about 25 cents per hour to run. That’s 50% more energy-efficient than the average full-size electric oven and about 35% more efficient than the average gas oven .
Ninja’s 4-quart air fryer oven is one of the best we’ve tested.
What Is An Air Frying Oven
By now, were all relatively well-versed in the world of air frying, including which air fryers are the best, what recipes you should cook in them and potentially, most importantly whether or not they really are the secret to healthier eating.
Overall, an air fryer functions by crisping and cooking food with circulated, heated air with little-to-no oil compared to typical deep frying. While countertop air fryers are great for quickly preparing smaller batches of food or cooking without heating up your kitchen, they’re not ideal for big-batch cooking or air frying an entire turkey for example. This is where an air fryer oven comes into play. You can achieve the same results you love from a countertop air fryer in your oven which gives you another level of versatility.

How Much Energy Does An Electric Oven Use
To determine electric stove consumption you’ll calculate the wattage pulled per hour of cooking. Most electric ovens draw around 3,000 watts, depending on the temperature. Once you find the wattage of your oven via the appliance tag, owner’s manual or an online product listing, multiply that by the number of hours you use the oven each day , then divide by 1,000 watts to find the kilowatt-hours of electricity used.
Next, find the average price per kWh of electricity in your state. For that, you can consult this chart that has the 2020 prices listed in cents per kWh. The prices for 2021 won’t be released until December 2022, but if you do some web searching, you should be able to find the latest figures. Multiply that amount by the number you just calculated to determine your operating cost per day.
Working with New York’s current electricity rate of 17 cents per kWh, a 3,000-watt oven would cost about 51 cents per hour when run at high heat. If I used my oven for roughly 1 hour per day for one year that would equal roughly $182 per year. This cost doesn’t include energy used by the range and burners.
A standard 1,500-watt air fryer has both gas and electric ovens beat handily when it comes to energy efficiency.

An air fryer basket, also known as a countertop air fryer, is a conventional air fryer with a free-style basket. The results of cooking using an air fryer with a basket mimic the results of deep-frying .
With an air fryer basket, the heating mechanism helps to circulate the heat around your food rapidly.
The countertop air fryer comes in various sizes, ranging from 3 to 5 quarts. A 5 quart appliance would be best for a family of 1 to 2 people.

How Is Air Frying Different From Baking In An Oven
Conventional ovens work by producing heat from an element . The heat is slowly dispersed through the oven over time. In the case of convection ovens, that time is sped up by the use of a fansimilar to the one in an air fryer.
On the other hand, air fryers use rapid air technology to create heat instead of an element. That helps them heat up much more quickly than an oven . That small size helps them circulate the heat more evenly, crisping up your food without hot spots.

How Is An Air Fryer Different From An Oven
The heating method in an air fryer is pretty much the same as a convection oven in that both use circulating dry heat to cook food. However, the small size of an air fryer means that both the food and the appliance itself heat up much faster . Another difference that accounts for the efficiency of the air fryer is the fact thatagain, due to its smaller sizethe food is much closer to the heating element itself, which is located at the top of the appliance. Because of its larger dimensions, a convection oven has heating elements on both the top and the bottom, but when using the middle rack to cookthe preferred placement in a convection oventhe food is never in such close proximity to the heat source. Aside from the heat itself, another difference is in the way that heat circulates: In both cases theres a fan to help spread the heat for even cooking, but the fan of an air fryer, located directly beneath the heating element, operates at a significantly greater speed . Finally, air fryers do such a good job at getting food extra crisp because they feature a fryer-style basket that allows the hot air to penetrate while oils fall away into a perforated tray below. This means that less tossing and turning is required throughout the cooking process.
Air Fry Mode Cooking Test
First, there is no preheating required for either GE or LG, but the tabletop unit did require a preheat time.
Second, the GE display does not show a timer or countdown when you set a cook time, but the LG and the tabletop unit did give a countdown.
I followed the instructions in the manual for recommended cooking temperatures and adjusted the cook times based on how the food was cooking.
The GE and tabletop unit were both set to 400 F. The tabletop unit was the fastest, 15 minutes, GE was around 20 minutes, and the LG was set to 450 F and took around 25 minutes.
I could have left the wings in longer in both the GE and LG ovens to obtain more of a crisp factor, but they were fully cooked when I removed them from the oven.
GE Air Fry Mode at 400 F: 20 minutes
LG Air Fry Mode at 450 F: 25 minutes
Tabletop Air Fryer at 400 F: 15 minutes
I cooked the Brussels sprouts for the same amount of time and at the same temperature in both the LG and GE. I tossed them in olive oil, salt, and pepper.
As you can see by the coloring, the tabletop sprouts cooked the fastest and had the most color. The sprouts cooked in the GE obtained slightly more color than those cooked in the LG for the same amount of time and temperature.
GE Air Fry Mode at 450 F: 15 minutes
LG Air Fry Mode at 450 F: 15 minutes
Tabletop Air Fryer at 400 F: 8 minutes
GE Air Fry Mode at 425 F: 10 minutes
