What We Think Of The Ninja Af161 Max Xl Air Fryer
One of the best parts about fried food is the crispy exterior. If you are a crispy lover, you need an air fryer with extreme crisping abilities, and only one air fryer really fits that bill: the Ninja AF161 Max XL Air Fryer.
This air fryer comes with max crisp technology because of its super heat. It can get as high as 450 degrees Fahrenheit. The high heat allows the air fryer to cook quickly and crisply. It even comes with a convenient broil rack to ensure your meals have a crispy crunch or bubbly finish.
Of course, the Ninja AF161 Max XL Air Fryer is good for more than just crispy finishes. It also has the ability to air roast, bake, reheat, and dehydrate, making it another great multipurpose pick. In other words,
Now, lets talk about some of the downsides of the Ninja AF161 Max XL Air Fryer. It is highly expensive. Even though it offers multifunctional capabilities, it is much more expensive than the previous model, which proves that you can get an affordable air fryer that functions for many purposes.
I chose this air fryer because it has a smaller carbon footprint than others. It has multiple modes of cooking and has a great crisp option. The secret to this air fryer is to shake up the food every few minutes to make sure it is all crisped evenly. The fact that you can dish wash the cooking parts further makes it a better option than some of the other air fryers.

Switching To An Air Fryer May Aid In Weight Loss
Deep-fried foods arent just higher in fat, but theyre also higher in calories and may contribute to weight gain.
One study of 33,542 Spanish adults found that a higher intake of fried foods was associated with a greater risk for obesity .
If youre looking to trim your waistline, swapping your deep-fried foods for air-fried foods may be a good place to start.
Clocking in at 9 calories in every gram of fat, dietary fat contains over twice as many calories per gram as other macronutrients like protein and carbohydrates.
Because air-fried foods are lower in fat than deep-fried ones, switching to an air fryer may be an easy way to help cut calories and help you manage your weight.
Besides being higher in fat and calories, frying food can create potentially dangerous compounds like acrylamide.
Acrylamide is a compound formed in carbohydrate-rich foods during high-heat cooking methods like frying .
According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, acrylamide is classified as a probable human carcinogen, meaning that some research shows that acrylamide may be linked to cancer development .
The Environmental Protection Agency also finds that acrylamide is likely to be carcinogenic to humans .
Air-frying your food instead of using a deep fryer may help lower the acrylamide content of your fried foods.
In fact, one study found that air-frying reduced acrylamide by up to 90% compared to traditional deep-frying .

Air Fryers Reduce The Risk Of Toxic Acrylamide Formation
Frying food in oil can cause dangerous compounds to develop, such as acrylamide. This compound forms in certain foods during high-heat cooking methods, such as deep frying.
According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, acrylamide may have links to the development of some cancers, including endometrial, ovarian, pancreatic, breast, and oesophageal cancer. have also suggested a link between dietary acrylamide and kidney, endometrial, or ovarian cancers, though the results are uncertain.
Are Air Fryers More Healthy
One of the main selling points of air fryers is that foods cooked in them are healthier than foods cooked in a deep-fryer, because an air fryer uses less oil.
So let’s look at that. For starters, we know that all cooking oils are pretty healthy. As long as you’re not frying your foods in vegetable shortening or lard, there’s nothing particularly unhealthy about the oil that goes in a deep-fryer.
Of course, oil has calories and while calories themselves are not unhealthy, if you’re looking to cut calories, using less oil might be a good idea. Right?
Well, that depends. When cooked at the proper temperature , deep-fried foods actually absorb very little oil. In fact, a comparative study found that french fries cooked in oil had between 14 and 40 more calories per 4-ounce serving than baked fries, depending on the type of oil that was used and whether or not the fries had a seasoned coating. For reference, 40 calories is about half a banana.
In other words, the amount of added calories from deep-frying is negligible. French fries are just a high-calorie food, whether they’re cooked in oil or not.
Not only that, but the instructions for the air fryer call for tossing the uncooked fries in 1 to 1 1/2 tablespoons of oil before cooking. That’s 120 to 180 calories worth of extra oil. Even divided into two servings, which is a typical batch for an air fryer, there’s still just as much oil on your air fryer french fries as there are in your conventional deep-fryer french fries.

What To Consider Before You Buy An Air Fryer
- Air fryers come in various shapes and sizes. In general, smaller units are designed to cook food for one to two people at a time. XL and XXL sizes can fit enough food to feed up to six people at a time.
- Some air fryers are multi-functional. You can find air fryer-toaster oven combo units and even pressure cookers with an air fry function. Depending on your space and how you plan to use your air fryer, a combo unit could be right for you.
- Prices vary. Air fryers can range in price from around $40 to upwards of $300. We’ve found that many of the best air fryers cost around $100 and are often on sale.
- Make the most of your air fryer with accessories. Like the beloved pressure cooker, air fryer accessories are hitting the market making the appliance even more versatile.
How Do They Work
Air fryers are square or egg-shaped devices, about the size of a coffeemaker, that sit on your countertop. You put the food you want to fry — chopped potatoes, chicken nuggets, zucchini slices — into a slide-out basket. If you want, you can toss it in a light coating of oil.
A fan pushes heated air — up to 400 F — around the food. It’s a bit like a convection oven.
The circulating air cooks the outside of foods first, which creates a crispy brown coating and keeps the inside soft, just like deep-fried foods. As the food cooks, a container below the basket catches any grease that drops.
Bottom line: Air fryers create the crispy, chewy foods people love without all the oil.

How do they work? Is it really frying? What kinds of foods can you make in your new air fryer? Here’s everything you need to know about a basic basket-type air fryer.
How Large Is An Air Fryer
Air fryers come in different sizes, so you need to take into account both the external dimensions and the internal space .
One of the limitations of an air fryer is that if food is crowded inside, the cooking performance will be affected. It cooks by circulating hot air, so if the air cant get to the food, it wont cook properly.
The internal capacity of most air fryers ranges from approximately 1.5 litres to 5.5 litres. At the smaller end, youll be able to cook a side dish like fries for one to two people. At the larger end, youll be able to cook a main course for four people. The cooking capacity will be shown in kg or quarts if youre in the US.
In terms of counter space, bear in mind that itll need several inches of free space around it while its in operation.

Air fryers have gained popularity for producing crispy, evenly browned “fried” foods without the use of an actual deep fryer. They work by circulating hot air around food, similarly to a convection oven, and eliminate the need for much, if any, cooking oil, resulting in grocery savings and less cleanup.
Many consumers are convinced air fryers produce a superior fried finish on French fries, tater tots, and chicken wings, compared to a standard oven. They can even be used to make homemade chicken tenders and potato chips, making them worth the investment for fried snack food lovers.
Many air fryers are programmed with multiple cooking functions and can double as a toaster oven, convection oven, warmer, rotisserie, indoor grill, and more. With so many options on the market, it can be tough to choose the one that’s right for you, so we sent the top-rated air fryers to our experienced product testers to review. They cooked French fries, wings, and more, and tested out each appliance’s special features and additional functions beyond air frying. They specifically rated each air fryer on its design, heating capacity, performance, versatility, and overall value.
Here, the best air fryers, based on our extensive testing insights.
Does The Air Fryer Make Food Healthier
One of the claims about the air fryer is that it can fry things with a fraction of the oil of traditional deep fryers, while still delivering similar taste and texture. For that reason, its often touted as a healthier alternative to deep frying.
But my results were mixed. While I found I could air fry most vegetables with less oil than I needed for deep frying, I still needed about the same amount of oil Id use for oven-roasting in order to really make them taste comparable.
And while its true that you can air fry some things without any oil at all, the results varied for me here, too. Oil-less air fryer-roasted chicken tasted great. Oil-less french fries? Wouldnt recommend.
In short: If youre buying an air fryer to replace your Fry Daddy, youre likely to use less oil overall, and still end up with results that taste good. If youre buying an air fryer to replace or supplement your oven, you wont see as much of a difference in the amount of oil you use.

Solo Air Fryer: Best For Most People
The most basic of air fryers looks like a small robot. They are generally just a cylindrical base with a basket to hold the food that pulls in and out. These come as small as two quarts and can be as big as six or seven. These models come with digital controls or manual dials. There are also air fryers with dual compartments so you can make two types of food at different temps simultaneously. Ninja makes a particularly good one with two 4-quart cooking baskets .
Solo air fryers are the least expensive too, and they can be had for as little as $30. I’d say if you just want to try air frying but don’t want to commit a lot of money or kitchen space, opt for one of these.

Why Some Experts Dont Recommend Air Fryers
The primary reason some experts dont like Air fryers because of fried foods. Although air produces foods that may be healthier than deep-fried foods, its important to remember that when cooking with oil they are fried foods even though less harmful.
The air-frying also produces high temperatures at a rapid rate, thus making it extremely easy to burn food. As most of the air fryers cook 1 to 3 pounds of food at a time, it will be challenging to prepare for a large family at a time.

Best Air Fryer For A Small Kitchen: Cuisinart Compact Airfryer Toaster Oven
For anyone living in an apartment or with limited counter space, this compact air fryer from Cuisinart is a great investment. It acts as a replacement for a toaster and toaster oven, in addition to giving you crisp, air-fried foods.
“This air fryer also functions as a toaster oven and would fit easily under a cabinet without taking up too much space on a counter,” says Johnson.
Despite its versatility and size, there were a few drawbacks to this appliance. The air fryer created some burnt bits around the surface of the food. There is also no digital screen for accurate temperature reading. And in terms of cleanup, the removable parts aren’t dishwasher safe, and the mesh basket is a little hard to clean by hand.
This air fryer would take some trial and error to get things just right, but overall it acts as an all-in-one appliance that’s great for small kitchens.

I really wanted to love my air fryer. After talking to a few experts who raved about them I decided to give one a try. I figured even if I wasnt ambitious enough to make chicken parmesan or kebabs, air-frying up some veggies regularly would be a tasty way to get myself to eat more of them.
But before I got going on some veggies, I needed some protein for lunch, so I tried this coconut shrimp recipe from Ben Mims, author of “Air Fryer Every Day: 75 Recipes to Fry, Roast, and Bake Using Your Air Fryer”. They came out great crispy and golden with a nice, coconutty crunch.
