How To Clean An Air Fryer

Want the BEST AIR FRYER?! 2021 Air Fryer Buying Guide

You’re a few simple steps away from your basket fryer looking good as new again!

Your air fryer is probably one of your favorite kitchen appliances, and it comes in so handy to cook foods fast and without excessive oil. Think about crisped-up fish sticks or chicken wings with no added oil, and perfect al dente zucchini noodles, and leftovers reheated to perfection.

That said, air fryers need to be cleaned after every use. Even after using minimal or no added oil, food bits and grease can accumulate and cause your air fryer can smell, or even begin to smoke. Whether you use a basket-style or tray air fryer, here are some tips from the Good Housekeeping Institute to make cleaning it a breeze:

Why You Should Trust Me

As a senior staff writer at Wirecutter, Ive researched, tested, and reviewed toasters, toaster ovens, and deep fryers, among other kitchen gear and gadgets, since 2016. Ive spent more than 250 hours over the past four years researching and testing air fryers for this guide. In that time, Im pretty sure Ive eaten more fish sticks and french fries than the Gortons Fisherman and Ronald McDonald combined.

What’s The Best Way To Clean An Air Fryer

It depends on your air fryer model, so consult the user manual. Generally, you should clean the fryer basket and grease catcher with hot, soapy water and a soft sponge after each use.

You can simplify cleanup by air frying your food on aluminum foil or parchment paper.

Instant Pot Instant Vortex

Ive been a fan of air frying for several years already, so I didnt think there was anything a new air fryer could do that would really impress me. Boy, was I wrong! The Instant Vortex has a far larger capacity than my former small countertop air fryer and even boasts a transparent window that allows you to peer in as your food cooks to check its progress. Its a genius addition because you dont have to worry about under- or overcooking food, or letting the precious hot air escape by opening the pull-drawer to take a look. I also love the all-digital display of this machine, which gives it a distinctly Space Age feeling that appeals to just about everyone who loves tech gifts and gadgets.

Beyond just clever design, the Instant Vortex has enough space to cook a meal for a family. In the past, Id have to use an air fryer for small loads or dinner for one at the most, but this machine easily cooks the veggie burger, vegan sausage, and large home-grown zucchini my husband and I have a habit of sharing with a salad on warm summer nights. Plus, theres room for plenty more! Id definitely recommend this model to anyone looking to cook larger portions. Bryce Gruber, Home Editor

Pros:

  • Large enough capacity for a family
  • Transparent window to keep tabs on your food

Con:

  • Not ideal for small kitchens or tight spaces, as this air fryer takes up significant counter space

What To Know About Nonstick Pans

Bella Pro Series 2

If you follow a few specific rules, your pan just might last a lifetime!

  • Never use nonstick cooking spray. These sprays are not compatible with non-stick pans and create a buildup on the surface of the pan that, over time, is impossible to remove. If you need to use fat, use a minimal amount of butter or oil.
  • Skip the dishwasher. Even if a brand says its pan is dishwasher-safe, stick to hand-washing. The harsh soaps and high temperature and pressure of dishwashers can dull and damage the coating of the pan that is essential to maintaining its nonstick magic.
  • Dont use over high heat on the stove. There are a few pans that you can use over high heat, but, in general, low to medium low heat is recommended for nonstick pans. This is not only to keep them functioning properly, but also to keep them from releasing any harmful odors or chemicals.
  • Never heat an empty pan. This can release that awful odor that can be dangerous, and the high heat may be damaging to the pan.

How I Tested The Best Air Fryers

As is the case with any kitchen gadget, air fryers should be convenient, easy to use, and easy to store. Before testing any of these products, I assessed aesthetic factors like how much space each product takes up on the countertop, how easy they are to store, and how complicated they are to set up. I observed the control panel and took note of how simple or complicated the controls are for a beginner to use.

Next, I put each air fryer to work to test its basic functionality. To test air frying ability with dry food and just a bit of cooking spray, I fried frozen french fries. To test air frying ability with greasy, fatty food, I fried chicken wings to see how each oven would handle dripping juices to make sure they didnt create any smoke. To test baking ability, I baked chocolate chip cookies and brownies and observed how evenly the desserts were baked throughout, while making sure they didnt get too crispy or blackened on the outside.

To ensure consistency in my cooking tests, I used the same temperature settings and timeframe to … make wings, fries and cookies.

Are Air Fryers Energy Efficient

Air fryers vary in their energy efficiency, but it is possible to calculate how much energy an appliance will use, which in turn will help you cost up the impact it’ll have on your bills. Here’s how:

Take the appliance’s wattage and multiply it by the gadget’s hours of use per day, then divide the total by 1000. The result will be the appliance’s daily kilowatt-hour .

The cost per kilowatt-hour will vary depending on your energy tariff and area. If you have a smart meter installed at home, you’ll be able to see the cost per use during cooking without having to calculate it.

One of the many useful qualities of air fryers is the countertop size. These gadgets are much faster to heat up and designed to circulate hot air efficiently, meaning food can be cooked much quicker than in a traditional oven. For smaller quantities and specific ingredients, air fryers will be switched on for considerably less time, which equates to less electricity consumption.

What Is An Air Fryer And How Does It Work

Despite the name, an air fryer doesn’t fry at all. Rather, air fryers are more like a supercharged convection oven, circulating hot air with a fan and hitting food more rapidly than most ovens. That causes the outside of food to cook more quickly without drying out the inside and giving a crispy, fried-like outer shell to wings, fries and other foods.

Most air fryers come with a grated rack or perforated basket so the air can travel through and hit the food on all sides.

Dont Be Afraid Of The Amount Of Oil

Not only does the olive oil prevent the tomatoes from burning, but it also helps to cook the tomatoes, providing a smooth and rich mouthfeel. I promise, you want to use the full 1/2 cup!

Air Fryers Vs Multicookers

The home appliance market changes over time and new trends emerge. Right now, countertop cooking appliances are becoming bigger, bulkier and more feature-laden as they take on a multitude of cooking tasks, from air frying and pressure cooking, to steaming and slow cooking.

Weve tested pressure cookers and multicookers that also work as air fryers, like the Ninja OP350UK and the Instant Pot Duo Crisp & Air Fryer. These have separate lids for pressure cooking and air frying, and do a number of other jobs, too. All this versatility comes at a premium though, so if youre tempted by fancy features, consider whether youll really use them all. If you just want batches of chips and the odd chicken drumstick cooked, a simpler, cheaper air fryer will do the job just as well.

Are Air Fryers Healthy

The 10 Best Dual Voltage Air Fryer

“Air frying use significantly less oil than deep frying and pan frying, so it can provide a lower-calorie and lower-fat alternative that still delivers a crisp texture,” says Stefani Sassos, MS, RDN, CDN. “But air fryers are only as healthy as the foods you chose to cook in them. They wont magically remove saturated and trans fats from your meals.

To get the most health benefits out of your air fryer, Sassos recommends using it as a vessel to add more veggies and lean proteins to your diet. One of her favorites uses for it is air frying frozen veggies. “I couldn’t believe how easy it was the first time I tried it,” she says.

Instant Vortex Plus Xl Dual Basket Air Fryer $17999 On Amazon

We are big fans of multi-tasking, so when we heard about the dual-compartment Instant Vortex Plus, we knew it was a winner. It has 8 different modes and each basket has a window so you can see just how crisp your food is. The separate baskets save even more cooking time by allowing you to cook two different foods or two batches at once.

Air Fryers We Reviewed But Didn’t Score As Well

  • We’ve always loved Instant Pot. But if you’ve never used an air fryer before, we can’t recommend the Instant Vortex Plus . Its “Getting Started Guide” wasnt very helpful. We also found cooking with the included tray yielded better results than the basket the manufacturer suggested using. Still, if you don’t mind a lot of trial and error, this device can produce solid results.

  • We’ve reviewed a few Krups models. We like the Krups Easy Fry Deluxe Digital a bit better than the Krups Fry Delight thanks to its design and cooking results. However, neither are very close to mimicking the crispiness of food that came out of a traditional deep fryer.

  • Farberware 3.2 quart Digital Oil-Less Fryer is very inexpensive and does a decent job of crisping and browning, especially with frozen foods. However, the basket sticks and it’s a little confusing to use.

  • The generic-looking Power Air XL has a small capacity, and its basket doesn’t glide out very smoothly.

  • The Black and Decker 2L Purifry is a big appliance, but comes with a much smaller basket. With no digital controls and tiny numbers, it’s really difficult to set your temperature precisely.

Cosori Air Fryer Max Xl

Plugging in my Cosori Air Fryer was the culmination of a yearslong battle between me and my husband. He said that, for an air fryer with almost 100,000 reviews and a , wed be instantly obsessed. I said wed have zero space to store it. In the end, we were both right.

As a fan of roasted veggies, I appreciated the ability to whip up cooked vegetables in less timeand without heating the kitchen, a boon for summer cooking. The device is easy to use, and the touchscreen is a cinch to program. Admittedly, even the best air fryer takes some air frying trial and error to get the cook time just right. Following the included recipe booklet led to nearly burnt fries the first time, but simply using the preset settings helped me air fry a batch that was perfectly golden on all sides. Three cheers for the beep that lets you know when to shake the basket! Its convenient for those of us who might forget to tend to our food, and it ensures even cooking.

Of course, size still matters. Though not the largest air fryer on the market, this one still takes up more counter space than I can spare. And while the ability to toss it in the dishwasher is a plus, you wont fit it all in if youre also washing a dinners worth of dishes. Still, if you have the space, its a super convenient way to cook pretty much any meal imaginable. Tracey Neithercott, Editor

Cut Fat From Your Favourite Dishes Not Flavour Here’s Our Pick Of The Best Air Fryers

The best air fryers are ideal for cooking everything from chicken nuggets and chips to vegetables and even stir-fries. That’s because air fryers are an efficient way to satisfy your craving for “fried” foods with a much lower fat content so you can nibble on your favourite comfort foods with less oil.

They work by convection, meaning they circulate hot air around your food, ensuring every bit of surface area is exposed to the oil and heat. You simply need to spray or pour a little oil onto whatever youre cooking before switching on the appliance. A clever chemical process called the Maillard reaction creates a crispy result with far less fat up to 99% in some cases.

Air fryers generally operate between 150 and 200C, although different models will vary. Because so little oil is used, an air fryer won’t recreate exactly the same results as your favourite chippy, though most of our picks below do come close. So if you’re ready to make your favourite foods that little bit healthier, read our buying guide and bite-sized reviews to find the best air fryer for your needs and budget.

What Should You Look For In An Air Fryer

Power and size are the most important factors in finding the best air fryer for you. The Ninja air fryer that we liked best has 1,550 watts of power but you can expect an oven with slightly less oomph to also deliver solid results.

The best size for an air fryer is relative and will vary based on your personal requirements. A 4-quart model should be enough for most households and can easily hold five or six chicken thighs at once. There are also air fryers as large as 10 quarts that make cooking for large groups easier and some as small as 2 quarts that are perfect for singles and couples.

Other considerations include how intuitive the interfaces, dials and controls are as well as the build and durability of each air fryer. There are superpremium air fryers with loads of fancy bells and whistles but I tend to think they aren’t really worth the money. The air fryer is a fairly simple machine to begin with, so it’s best to avoid any that seem complicated.
