Setup Process: Set It On Top And Go
To operate the air fryer lid, it just needs to be placed on top of the Instant Pot and plugged in. The air fryer plug has a shield affixed to it that makes it impossible to plug it into an outlet next to another plug. This offers some protection from overloading a circuit, but its still possible if there are other outlets on the same circuit and theyre being used.

How To Air Fry With The Crisplid
You dont have to pressure cook something before air frying! Use the CrispLid to cook any food that would make it in an air fryer.
Fill the air fryer basket with the food you would like to cook. Place the tall trivet in the bottom of your stainless steel cooking pot, then put the filled air fryer basket on top. Place the Crisp Lid on top of the stainless steel cooking pot and lock the handle in place. Then follow your recipe instructions for temperature and cook time.

Who Should Buy The Duo Crisp With Ultimate Lid
The Duo Crisp with Ultimate Lid is a good choice for someone who uses a multicooker often but also wants to air fry on occasion. I stress often because if you tend to use an air fryer far more than an Instant Pot, pressure cooker or multicooker, this model is far bulkier and heavier than most solo air fryers.
I personally air fry far more than I use a multicooker so I’m happy with my small and light 2.6-quart Magic Bullet air fryer and its nonstick basket. I leave it on my counter most times, whereas my multicooker is stored in a closet until I’m ready to use it.
The Instant Pot Duo Crisp with Ultimate Lid is bulkier than most air fryers and it also requires more cleanup after an air frying session than I’m used to. It also takes about five minutes to preheat, while most other air fryers don’t need preheat time at all. That said, once it was ready to cook, this machine air-fried, broiled and roasted with the best of ’em.
I liked the new Duo Crisp fine, but the originalDuo Crisp without the built-in air fryer lid can be had for about $130. For my money, that’s the better pick if you’re looking for a machine that does it all. If you already have a 6-quart Instant Pot you like, grab the air frying lid for $70 or on sale for $55 at Crate & Barrel.
The Instant Vortex Has More Space
The Instant Vortex holds about about 2/3 of a bag of steak fries compared to the lid, which holds about 1/3 of the bag. The air fryer basket for the lid is even smaller than the inner pot of a standard six-quart Instant Pot, which should give you an idea of the limited space you’re working with. If you’re using your air fryer to cook for a family, the Instant Vortex is the way to go.

Thrilled, I ordered it from Amazon. It arrived a few days later in a fairly large box, almost the size of the Instant Pot itself. Indeed, the Air Fryer Lid is not insignificant in size, measuring 13.8 by 13.7 by 12.8 inches. It weighs in at 11.7 pounds, which is not exactly feather-light, but I didn’t find it to be too heavy. Bundled with the lid is a fryer basket and a metal insert, which you can use as a broiler tray or as a way to air-fry two tiers of food at once. There’s also an Air Fryer Lid cover, which you can turn upside down to use as a resting spot for your lid when it’s hot, so you won’t damage your countertop.
Interestingly, the instructions note that you should not have the Instant Pot and the Air Fryer Lid plugged in at the same time. In fact, the Air Fryer Lid’s plug has plastic webbing around it that covers up the other outlet when plugged in. The idea here is that the Air Fryer Lid is pretty powerful, and having a couple of devices plugged in might overwhelm the circuit.
About halfway through, the Air Fryer Lid beeped loudly, with the words “Turn Food” on its display. I then removed the lid and proceeded to, well, turn the food. From reading other air fryer recipes, this seems to be unique to the Air Fryer Lid. Most other air fryers just recommend you shake the basket around, and even that’s up to you there’s certainly no flashing reminder of it on the device itself.
What The Duo Crisp With Ultimate Lid Does
Unlike any Instant Pot before it, the Duo Crisp with Ultimate Lid has air fryer functionality built into the main lid. Because of this convection cooking element, you can air fry, broil, bake and roast — all cooking methods that most Instant Pots don’t offer. It also has most of the functionality of your basic Instant Pot multicooker including pressure cook, slow cook, steam and sauté.
While you won’t have to screw on a bulky conical air fryer lid attachment as you do for the original Duo Crisp, you will have to slide in the pressure cooker lid when you want to pressure or slow cook. However, that lid is very light and thin measuring no more than 2 inches high it shouldn’t be hard to find space for one.
I found the dials and controls simple to use, but I’m not used to air fryers that require preheat time.

The Air Fryer Basket Wore Out Quickly
After a few uses, I started having trouble with the air fryer basket that is included with the pot. The non-stick coating started to wear down quickly, leaving me with fries and chicken that were sticking to the bottom. To work around this, I purchased some perforated parchment paper inserts, and theyve made ALL the difference!
Multiple Appliances In One
This was the biggest sell for me, as I live in an apartment and dont have a huge amount of storage space. Im a bit of a kitchen appliance junkie, so Ive had my eye on an air fryer for a long time but couldnt justify the space it would take up, especially since I already own a toaster oven that can produce pretty similar results. The fact that the Duo Crisp combines multiple appliances into one is a huge plus for me!

Should I Buy The Instant Pot Air Fryer Lid Or The Duo Crisp
If you already have an Instant Pot that you love, or dont want to upgrade to the 8-quart, you can also purchase a separate air fryer lid to pair with it! The air fryer lid comes with its own controls and functions, and is able to air fry, broil, and dehydrate. The Instant Pot air fryer lid works just as well as the one that comes with the Duo Crisp , but the big drawback is that by using it with a 6-quart pot youll have even less space in your air fryer.
If you mainly want the lid so that you can brown food and make smaller batch sides like fries or crispy brussels sprouts, the lid is a great option! But, if youre looking to air fry entire meals like chicken wings, wed recommend upgrading to the 8-quart, or just know that youll need to work in multiple batches!
It Cooks Quicker Than An Oven But Not As Fast As An Air Fryer
Ive found that when cooking air fryer recipes in the Duo Crisp, youll need to add a few minutes to the cook time. For example, the average air fryer recipe calls for cooking fries at 380°F for about 15 minutes, but I find that in the Instant Pot they need about 20 minutes. However, they still produce a crispier and faster result than the oven, which takes about 40 minutes!

Making Fries With The Air Fryer Lid
For instance, to make fries, I start by putting the frying basket in the pressure cooker. Next, I like to preheat the pot and the basket , so I place the lid over the pot. When it makes a small ding sound, you know its locked in place.
Now, its time to get to set stuff up. Press the Air Fry button on the lid and adjust the time and temperature. Youll notice the temperature and time are already pre-set, but you can change the values by pressing the plus and minus buttons for Temp and Time.
For me, it takes about 13 to 15 minutes at 360F to make a batch of golden, crispy fries that melt in your mouth. When youre happy with the settings, press the Start button. Youll notice the display only says On – this is the preheating section of the cycle and when its done, it will display the temperature and make a noise.
Once the preheating is over, I use the handle on the lid to pick it up and place it on the provided heat-resistant pan. Next, I add the fries inside the basket and place the lid back on – the air frying process will resume.
One of the reasons I love this lid so much is that it notifies me when I should turn the fries . It does this by pausing the air frying process and displaying a turn food message . So, to do this, I will take the lid off and arm myself with a pair of heat-resistant mittens to pull out the frying basket and shake the fries. This lets the air move better through the food and ensures the fries will be golden on both sides.
The Instant Pot Air Fryer Lid Works As Promised But Only For Small Batches
The Instant Pot has garnered a huge fan base in recent years, and for good reason. Yes, it replaces your slow cooker and you can make yogurt in it but its real claim to fame is as an electric pressure cooker that can significantly shorten cooking time. Imagine braised short ribs in under an hour, or homemade pho in 30 minutes. The best part is that you can just set the timer and walk away, without having to tend to it like you would a stovetop version. It’s been over two years since I purchased my Instant Pot Ultra, and it remains one of my favorite kitchen appliances.
That said, I found myself lusting after yet another trendy kitchen appliance: the air fryer. The idea behind it is that it can “fry” foods with just hot air and without the oily mess that deep-frying entails. However, as publications like Wirecutter and Cook’s Illustrated point out, air fryers are nothing more than re-packaged convection ovens. If you do want crispy “air-fried” foods, Wirecutter recommends getting a countertop convection oven instead, which obviously has a lot more features than just air frying.
