Crispy Air Fryer Potato Chips

Easy Air Fryer Sweet Potato Chips + {VIDEO}

Who doesnt love crispy, crunchy snacks? Im a big fan of popcorn with butter, tortilla chips with salsa, and chili lime baked potato chips with just about anything! You, tooright?

If youve never tried fresh, homemade potato chips, you are in for a wonderful treat. Fresh chips taste so wholesome, thanks to the earthy flavor of fresh potatoes shining through.

Plus, my version here is made in an air fryer, using just a little bit of oil, so these are a snack you can feel good about making, and sharing, with the ones you love! My kids love when I make a batch or two of these tasty potato chips as an afternoon snack.

What Is The Method

The family that oil sprays together, stays together

1. Cut your potatoes into chips. I use a chef’s knife for this but you could get some kind of device off the internet if you are pernickety about all your chips being exactly the same size and shape.

In our handy guide to mistakes everyone makes with their air fryer, you will find ‘overloading your air fryer’. This is something to staunchly avoid when making chips as well. For absolutely ideal results, I would actually put the chips on racks in my fryer, spaced out from each other. Perhaps this is a little impractical if you are trying to feed a family of six in a hurry, so feel free to use the basket as normal. But seriously, don’t pack in too many chips or you will probably end up with a soggy and unsatisfying result, even with my ace method.

2. If your air fryer requires pre-heating, pre-heat to 140ºC/280ºF. Unfortunately all air fryers are different so you may find you need to experiment over a few batches of chips, and end up changing the temperatures to ones that suit your own air fryer better, but 140/280 is a good starting point.

4. Take the chips out, put them on a big plate and let them cool for, let’s say, half an hour? Or as long as you can stand to wait really. Some people put the chips in the fridge at this point but that seems a bit much to me.

Frozen Chips In Airfryer

Surprisingly frozen chips still take about the same time to cook from frozen as fresh chips! Chunky cut frozen chips will take about 15-20 minutes at 200°C / 400°F.

You are ready to serve your homemade air-fried chips! Perfect as they are, or as a side dish to many recipes!!!

How Do I Store Air Fried Potato Chips

You store these chips just like any other: in an air-tight container at room temperature. They should stay fresh up to two weeks.

If you have leftover chips that you want to keep longer than two weeks, you can freeze them. Simply place them in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Put this sheet in the freezer. Once the chips are completely frozen, you can transfer them to a plastic freezer bag. To reheat, pop them back in the air fryer for a couple of minutes, until they’re warm and crispy. Don’t let them overcook. Alternately, you can reheat them in the oven at 250º for about ten minutes.

Air Fryer Frozen Chips

Homemade Air Fryer Fish & Chips

Can you use frozen chips in the air fryer? Yes, you can and it’s the best and quickest way to cook frozen chips. Simply heat your air fryer up to the temperature on the packaging and then cook them for ¾ of the time stated, but check on them every 5 minutes. You don’t need to add oil or seasoning, as they are usually already coated in these.

We find that cooking at 200°C for 13-14 minutes results in perfect air fryer frozen chips.

You don’t need to arrange the chips like we have described above – simply dump them in the basket and cook! You can also make cheesy chips this way by sprinkling some cheese on top once cooked and cook for a further 2 minutes.

Yes, you can, and that was the whole reason why an air fryer was invented. When the Philips Air Fryer was introduced, it was all about the chips.

This is one of my favorite ways to use up leftover zucchini because you only need a couple extra ingredients to bring it together! Theyre all things that you can find in your pantry. See my tips section below for more ways you can customize the flavor of your zucchini chips!

    Shaking Your Air Fryer Chips

The shaking of the air fryer basket is fantastic for making sure your chips are not stuck together or stuck to the bottom of the air fryer basket.

It also helps you get an even crisp on all your chips rather than just one or two.

Some air fryer chips recipes, will tell you to shake your chips every 3rd minute and this is bad advice. Who wants to stand over their chips and shake them that much?

Instead, we recommend shaking your chips twice, just as you alter the temperature.

    Cook Your Chips: Part Two

Air fryer time! Preheat if required, keep your chips as spaced out as possible nb: it may not be all that possible and give them 10-15 minutes on 160ºC/320ºF, shaking at least once during this time. It’s hard to be totally specific here as air fryers vary so much in terms of performance, so you might need to experiment.

The important thing to note here is that you should not use any oil. I don’t know why but this seems to work better, for me. Depending on your taste, and how your air fryer performs, you could consider using oil at this stage but not in the final stage. Up to you, guv’nor.

Again, you are now meant to let your chips cool. Again, I am too impatient to let this happen completely, so I give it 10 minutes while helping myself to a nice big vat of wine, before my partner has time to polish off all the vino.

What You Need To Make Potato Chips In The Air Fryer

    Ingredients:

Air Fryer We actually have 2 air fryers, but my favorite is the Cosori model

Mixing Bowl to soak the potatoes in

Parchment Paper Liners These are optional, but they make cleanup so easy. They are pieces of parchment paper that are sized to fit your air fryer. The liners have holes in them to allow the air to circulate for even cooking.

Oil Spritzer Not all air fryer recipes call for or need extra oil, but it helps to crisp things up. Having a spritzer or mister on hand is really convenient and keeps you from overusing the oil.

Mandolin Some people arent comfortable using this gadget, but as long as you are very careful and use the slicing guard, it makes slicing easy. I like to use it because it keeps the slices equal in thickness, which helps the chips to air fry evenly.

Peel your potatoes. Use a potato chipper and if you slice the potatoes in half theyre super quick to chip.

Rinse the chips in cold water.

Pat them dry on a clean towel or using kitchen towel. No need to pre-soak the potatoes.

Season the chips with salt & pepper. You can use other seasonings too if you like.

I like to add Chinese Five Spice to boost the flavour of the air fryer chips with next to no effort. Also, garlic granules work really well in the air fryer if youre using spray oil.

Cook for 12 minutes at 160C in your air fryer. Shake several times during cooking.

Turn up to 200C for another 10 minutes. Check after 5 minutes as depending on size they can cook quickly. Youll want to shake your chips regularly, to ensure even cooking.

If your chips look raw then exercise some common sense and give them a few more minutes to cook! Cooking times can vary depending on chip size, potato type and even the type of air fryer being used.

How To Make Air Fryer French Fries

When youre ready to cook, heres what you need to do:

First, chop your potatoes. Aim for them all to be a similar size, about 1/4-inch thick. That way, theyll all cook at the same rate. I dont recommend peeling your potatoes the skin helps them crisp up nicely as they cook. Once youve chopped the potatoes into fries, toss them all with olive oil and salt.

Next, cook the first batch. Spread the cut potatoes in a single layer in the air fryer basket with a little space between each one. Dont cram them in! The space allows the hot air to come in contact with all sides of the fries, which is what makes them golden brown and crisp. Air fry them at 380 for 12 to 15 minutes, flipping halfway. Take them out when theyre crisp and brown around the edges.

Repeat with the remaining potatoes, cooking as many batches as necessary to give the fries adequate space in the basket.

Finally, toss them all in together! When you finish cooking the last batch, add all the fries back into the air fryer basket and cook them for 1 to 2 minutes to warm and crisp up the earlier batches. When all the air fryer French fries are crispy, take them out, and dig in!
