Here’s the BEST Way to Clean Your Air Fryer | Spotless | Real Simple

The Easiest Air Fryer Book EVER! is a cook book everyone is

going to love. We have already started marketing it, posting

the front cover to our social media pages too much

excitement.

We believe, that the Air Fryer is a trend that is here to stay.

The Easiest AIR FRYER Book Ever!

Honestly, I have been asked to write an EASY Air Fryer Book for the better part of 12 to 18 months. Weekly requests online, by email, through messenger, Facebook and Instagram. As the frequency of these requests increased, so too did my interest in the machines, how they worked and what you could make in them.

Essentially, an air fryer is a kitchen appliance that cooks food quickly by frying it with minimal oil and very hot air. An air fryer can cook frozen foods such as chips and vegetables, fresh meat, nuts and even baked goods.

Literally, over a 6-month period, we learnt that nearly EVERYTHING can be made in an airfryer. If you can bake it in an oven, fry it on your stove top or BBQ it outdoors, chances are you can make it in an air fryer.

Although synonymous with fried chicken and French fries, we hope to have compiled a variety of air fryer recipes that are healthier, more family friendly, nutritious, delicious and above all EASY! From Zucchini Nuggets to Pizzas, Buffalo Wings to Bagels, its more a question of What cant you cook in an Air Fryer?

Do You Need To Use Oil In An Air Fryer

Short answer: No, you don’t need oil. But some foods do well with a light spray or coating of cooking oil. Vegetables including green beans, broccoli, asparagus, and even potatoes will dry out if you blast them in an air fryer so a light spritz of avocado or olive oil can go a long way.

Remember, you’re still using far less oil than deep-frying or even pan-frying in which food sits in oil or is submerged the entire time it’s cooking. Anything with some inherent oil content, like chicken or salmon, will have plenty of natural oil to baste itself while cooking.

When air frying vegetables, a light coating of oil goes a long way.

Skin side up: Air fryers heat from above, so make sure your skin-on poultry always finishes cooking skin side up to crisp in the more direct heat. This means starting thicker bone-in breasts skin-side down and then flipping them, while thighs and split Cornish hens should cook skin-side up for well-burnished skin. Give it a poke: When cooking fattier chicken thighs and drumsticks, poke a few holes in the skin with a skewer to help render the fat.

Air Fryer Toaster Ovens

So if an air fryer is like a convection oven and a convection oven is similar to a toaster oven, do you actually need an air fryer toaster oven? Maybe not, but it depends on if the air fryer toaster oven has any features that you aren’t already getting from your air fryer and if those are features you actually intend to use.

“Steer away from combo air fryers whose secondary appliance does repetitive functions,” says Nick Drewe, CEO and founder of Wethrift.

If your biggest concern about purchasing an air fryer is devoting precious counter space to yet another appliance, then you might be a good candidate for a combination air fryer and toaster oven.

“While this appliance is bigger than the standard toaster oven, it does allow you to have one appliance on your counter that performs multiple functions quite well, including toasting, baking small foods, and, of course, air frying,” says Emily Paster, author of Epic Air Fryer Cookbook.

The biggest difference between basket style air fryers and air fryer ovens is how they are configured. “With a basket style air fryer, you can shake the food around in the basket to flip things over. With an air fryer oven, you’ll need to flip foods by hand,” Laurence says. Often, however, you’ll find you don’t need to flip at all because they cook quite evenly with the air moving all around the food.

What Should I Look For In An Air Fryer

Space

First, make sure you know how much bench space you have available. If you make chips regularly, you might want to leave it out permanently. The two basic shapes are tall and fat and short and slightly fatter . Be aware that top-opening models could be out of the running if you have restricted space above the bench, as the lid needs to be opened upwards. If you’re planning to pack your air fryer away after use, look for a compact size with a uniform shape to slot easily into a cupboard.

Claimed capacity or volume

Take the manufacturers claimed measurements with a grain of salt as the claimed capacity or volume can be misleading. Some manufacturers measure the whole space inside the air fryer and not the actual useable capacity. For example, a “10-litre” model may only be able to cook about 500g of chips and a “2500-gram” model won’t actually be able to accommodate that much weight of food.

Cleaning

Air fryer parts are reasonably easy to clean and fit into a domestic sink. Most parts are dishwasher-safe. but they’re also easily cleaned by hand if they have a non-stick coating.

Instant Brands is known for creating amazing air fryers and smart countertop appliances in the US, so we were first in line to review this new model when it launched in the UK. The Instant Vortex Mini Air Fryer not only wowed us with its value-for-money, but it also impressed us in testing. Despite the limited capacity, it was able to air fry our chips evenly with just a shake or two from us halfway through.

This air fryer is perfect for small kitchens. It has a removable basket liner that can drain away fat from bacon and juices from chicken, but take it out and suddenly you can bake, roast and even reheat in this beauty.

You can pick up the Instant Vortex Mini Air Fryer in a range of fun colours. We tried it in red, but the blue option is quite fetching. There is also a white for clean kitchens, and a failsafe matte black. The display is very intuitive, and can be controlled with touchscreen settings and a tactile dial. The only con? Its not great for families.

Dont let the low price of the GoWISE USA 3.7 Quart 8-in-1 Air Fryer fool you. Its no slouch at air frying and comes with the digital controls and preprogrammed settings youd expect from a much more expensive machine. Although the basket is smaller than in many models and could only hold 3 burgers in one layer at once, it was able to roast a 4-pound chicken.

Best Budget Pick: Gourmia Digital Air Fryer

Equipment Review: Air Fryers

If you’re not looking to drop a full Ben Franklin on your air fryer, know that you don’t have to but can still nab a quality air fryer oven for relatively cheap. Of the many we tested, the Gourmia was among the least expensive at under $50 but it performed quite well in most of the tests.

This five-quart oven cooked chicken wings especially well with crispy skin and juicy center, and we found the power nearly on par with the Ninja and Dash ovens. It also made very crispy French fries and toasty mozzarella sticks with a gooey center.

One small drawback for this machine is its slightly clumsy build. The basket didn’t slide into the oven as flush as you might want and that could ultimately lead to problems but it didn’t affect my use of it in any way. This air fryer also has a lot of presets which I don’t generally care for since they don’t account for how much food you’re cooking or the size of, let’s say, a chicken wing or thickness of your French fries. I find it’s always better to use a rough preset recommendation and a lot of progress checking the first few times you cook something. That way you’ll learn about the oven and its power for yourself.

All that said, this 4-quart digital air fryer has a lot of oomph for the price and it’s a great size for most kitchens.

How We Test Air Fryers

To compare each air fryer, we’ve cooked up batches and batches of fries and chicken wings. As well as evaluating how, crisp, evenly browned and in the case of chicken wings, how moist and juicy the meat was, weve also compared how easy they are to use.

We rated each design on how many settings it offers, how durable and easy to clean the body and parts are, how loud their fans are and how hot the exterior casing gets. For each model we wanted to know whether it was simple to use design and didnt require reading a thick instruction manual before use, came with useful accessories such as frying baskets, or a recipe book for inspiration.

The holidays are synonymous with get-togethers with loved ones, exchanging heartfelt gifts and the best food your family has to offer. While it’s great when you’re actually eating it, the cooking process can be a pain, especially if you’re cooking for a large group.

It can be messy and, most importantly, time consuming. But what if there was one device that would make cooking and the following cleanup a breeze?

It may sound too good to be true, but that’s exactly what air fryer lovers say their favorite gadget can do. The appliance has been showing up on kitchen countertops across the board, providing a quick way to make crispy, satisfying fried food without all the fatty oils.

But according to Urvashi Pitre, author of “Air Fryer Revolution,” you could be missing out if you only think of it as a way to make fried chicken and tater tots. She uses hers to char vegetables, cook steak, “hard-boil” eggs and so much more. We broke down everything you need to know about the handy gadget, plus some bestsellers and new options to consider.

With two separate cooking baskets and heating zones, this air fryer enables you to cook different foods with different cooking times and temperatures at the same time. You won’t have to choose between air frying wings or fries on game days and can prepare a complete meallike air-fried chicken with crispy Brussel sprouts or sweet potato wedges on the side.

The magic lies in the “Smart Finish” feature, which lets you program the air fryer with two cook times and temperatures for different foods. The air fryer will automatically start the basket with the shorter of the two cook times so both baskets are finished cooking at the same time.

There are six cooking presets, including air fry, air broil, roast, bake, reheat, and dehydrate. Our tester found this air fryer cooks faster than other models and the cook time on most recipes needed to be shortened for best results. However, if you’re looking for added space and the convenience of cooking two different foods at the same time, our reviewer highly recommends this model.

What Type Of Air Fryer Should You Buy

How to Choose the Best Air Fryer?

There are two types of air fryers those with baskets and those that look like a toaster oven. The basket-style is arguably the more popular with a huge selection of models to choose from. These essentially focus on air frying and nothing else. Each features a tray with a handle which you pull out, and a basket within to place the food. Depending on the capacity, basket air fryers take up a relatively small space on your counter.

The best toaster ovens, on the other hand, are much more versatile. These appliances can do everything an air fryer can, as well as toast, roast and bake. This makes toaster ovens the more appealing of the two in terms of functionality. They can also hold a larger capacity because of the oven design. However, they do take up significantly more space on your counter and you need to be prepared to pay a higher price for the extra features.

It should be flagged that some basket-style air fryers also feature a hybrid design between the two, giving them some of the added functionality of toaster ovens.

How Our Test Kitchen Found The Best Air Fryers

To find our Test Kitchen-Preferred air fryer, our team tested the most popular air fryers on the market, whipping up all sorts of recipes and judging them according to these standards:

  • Texture: How well do our favorite air fryer recipes turn out? Is the finished product crisp? Tender?
  • Cooking quality: Does the air fryer cook food thoroughly? Our Test Kitchen cooked all kinds of dishes, including meatballs, crab cakes, chicken wings and even cinnamon rolls.
  • Price: Is the product affordable? Was the performance reflected in the price?

How To Achieve More Even Cooking In An Air Fryer

Avoid overfilling: Air fryers work by circulating hot air around food, which can be limited if food is packed too tightly, causing it to steam instead of crisp, and cook unevenly. We recommend taking a jigsaw puzzle approach to fitting foods, cutting larger proteins in half and skewering smaller pieces to make it easier to arrange more food in the basket without overcrowding.Rotate and flip proteins: It may seem fussy to rotate and flip meats halfway through cooking, but it helps the air circulation reach every part of the food. We found it easy to do so with a pair of basic kitchen tongs for nimble control and so we werent reaching into a hot oven.Toss vegetables in a bowl: Yes the air fryer basket does come with a handle, but shaking the basket to turn your food can give uneven results. We found it was worth it to toss French fries and other vegetables into a bowl partway through cooking, which redistributed them much more efficiently for perfectly even browning. Lincoln log your skewers: Kebabs are not just fun to eat they also provide an easy way to space out food in the air fryer basket. Four or more skewers, when stacked in a perpendicular arrangementlog cabin stylemaximized exposure to air. We employed the same method with our Zucchini Fries.
