What We Like About The Philips Viva Hd9220/20 Airfryer

Product Review: Philips HD9721-21 Viva Collection Airfryer

The compact Philips Viva HD9220/20 Airfryer has almost everything you could want in an air fryer. It’s compact, stylish, versatile, and easy to use. Plus, it comes with adjustable heat and timer settings with which to play around. Chips and fries are certainly not the only foods you can cook in this baby.

Undoubtedly, its best feature is the results â both we and customers felt the Viva airfryer outshined the competition. Yummy, crispy, better-than-oven-baked chips, fries, and “fried” foods are yours without the extra oil. Looking for a quality-built air fryer for solo suppers, dates, or small family meals? Then, we think it’s the perfect air fryer to get you started!

Great Appliance But Needs To Be Made Easier To Clean

Great for frozen foods, roast pork and crackling. Also works perfect on sausage. Not great for spring rolls. Havent tried baking yet so cant comment. Removing and cleaning basket is easy. Need to clean after EVERY use as grease that has been caked on will take more effort later to clean. Hard to get into or clean top section where heat comes from so over time you will get a build up of food splatters, grease and oil- this may turn you off using the product as its probably a little unhygienic to look at.

    Where Does It Fall Short

Philips Viva Collection TurboStar Airfryer Black HD9621/11

The Viva HD9220/20 is not ideal for bread, yoghurt-making, or dehydrating foods. Why? This model has a minimum temperature of 80° C. If you want to prove bread, make yoghurt, or dehydrate fruit, you need an air fryer with a minimum temperature of at most 40° C.

To achieve the best results or cook certain dishes, buying the additional accessories is essential. However, you can try to use whichever small, oven-safe baking dishes or racks you have at home. Utilising foil and air fryer parchment paper is also an option and helps make clean-up easier. Speaking of which, it’s not easy to clean the interior basket mesh of the unit.

Philips Viva Collection Airfryer Hd9621/: Verdict

Philips Airfryer HD9621 does brilliant chips with just the tiniest soupçon of oil sprayed on

This Airfryer is another hit from Philips. Its fast, efficient and quiet too considering how well itll cook your food. Of course, we tried chips in it and both frozen and french fries came out tops. Youll need to remember to take them out and give them a shake though, otherwise theyll cook unevenly and a bit of spray on oil wont go amiss either.

Some items can be made to look even more appetizing by brushing with a little oil too in order to increase the browning effect, with chicken thighs being a prime example. Vegetables meanwhile cook impressively, and everything seems to happen way quicker than doing them using an alternative method.

If you’re looking for swifter mealtimes then an air fryer is a definite bonus. And, if you hate washing up or don’t have a dishwasher then youll find theres hardly anything to clean up after youve eaten. Another plus point is the way the Philips Airfryer HD9621 can also be used for baking, but note that youll need to shell out for accessories, such as muffin cups or a baking pan for producing cakes and bread. Nevertheless, this is a great little machine.

Manually Adjustable Time And Temperature Control

Its integrated timer allows you to pre-set cooking times of up to 30 minutes. The auto-off function includes a “ready” sound indicator. The fully adjustable temperature control allows you to pre-set the best cooking temperature for your food up to 390 Fahrenheit. Enjoy crispy golden-brown fries, snacks, chicken, meat and more, all prepared at the right time and temperature for the best result!

What We Don’t Like About The Philips Viva Hd9220/20 Airfryer

Philips Viva Collection XXL HD9650/99 Air Fryer – Black – Product Overview

Air fryers are one of those kitchen appliances that really do take the guesswork out of cooking. Don’t know how to boil an egg â or, in this case, fry chips â to save your life? Then, an air fryer could be for you. However, If you’re looking for a fully-programmed air fryer, the Philips Viva air fryer may not be your top choice. Though it does come with a helpful recipe booklet, there are no presets on which to rely. You need to choose your temperature and time settings for the best results.

Speaking of which, this model is the older version of the Philips Essential and the newer one does have presets. You’ll also find it tricky to see what’s going on inside as the Viva HD9220/20 has no window. If you’re a big family of 3+, it won’t manage more than snacks or one component of your meal, either. Being the smallest in the Viva range, you won’t fit much in it. Certainly, not as much as you can in a Philips Airfryer Essential XL or Premium XXL. Though, a small whole chicken, gammon, beef roast, or lamb leg may squeeze in.

Larger Capacity Viva And Essential Airfryer Xl & Xxl Machines

If you’re looking for a bigger air fryer, then the Philips Essential XL and Viva Premium XXL air fryers are also worth considering. The Essential XL features much the same functions as the Essential, except it has a 1.2 kg capacity basket. The Essential and Essential XXL air fryers are as highly-rated as the Viva HD9220/20 and the newest in the range.

Whereas the 1.4 kg-capacity Philips Viva Premium Airfryer XXL meets in the middle of the Viva and Essential ranges. It features five presets, Turbostar Technology, a touch screen, and a temp/time dial. This air fryer is even more highly-rated than the Viva HD9220/20. You can feed up to 4 people with the Essential or Viva, 5 with the Essential XL, and 6 with the Premium Viva XXL air fryer.

    Is It Worth The Money

Are you looking for a starter air fryer that also affords you the option to play around with time and temperature? If so, the Philips Viva HD9220/20 Airfryer is a solid choice. Though pricier than a lot of other brands, it’s one of the best quality machines out there â not only as far as build quality but also in terms of results. The proof is in the pudding â and it cooked some of the crispiest fries we’ve seen done in an air fryer!

Other pros include how quietly and odourless it runs and compact it is. To answer the question, “is it worth the money?” We think so. There are some downsides to this machine, though. They include getting an uneven cook if you don’t shake or mix your food during the cooking process. And pricey accessories, a hard-to-clean mesh basket grill, and being quite pricey even though this is an older model.

Add to this that the new Philips Essential and Essential XL Airfryer’s offer much more at a not-much-higher price point. If you’re looking for an air fryer to experiment with proving and baking bread, dehydrating, or yoghurt-making, it’s not suitable, either. You need a machine that can run at 40° C or less for these purposes. Otherwise, it’s a solid buy, especially if you can grab one on sale or clearance.

What Philips Viva Hd9220/20 Airfryer Owners Think

    Viva Collection Digital Airfryer HD9238/01

The Viva HD9220/20 Airfryer is one of the most popular air fryers on the market and has been so for the last decade. There are many reasons why customers love this air fryer, including its design, versatility, and adjustability. The two best-loved features of the Viva air fryer are the crispy results and the quality build of the machine itself, especially when compared to cheaper machines on the market.

What did customers not like about the Philips Viva HD9220/20 Airfryer? Mainly cleaning the grill, not being able to easily clean the top of the air fryer behind the heating element. And needing to shake or mix food throughout the cooking process to ensure an even cook. Two issues that have been addressed with the newer Essential models, thanks to a new starfish-shaped pan and non-stick perforated basket.

Philips Airfryer Viva Collection: Is It Any Good

Philips claims that its Philips Airfryers can produce meals that reduce fat by 80% and, having tested the appliance cooking various dishes, we can certainly vouch for its fat extracting qualities. The usual offenders, such as chicken legs and wings, for example, emerge from the air fryer with the bulk of the oil and fat left inside the unit rather than all over the food.

Fish, meanwhile, salmon in our tests was able to crisp up beautifully on the outside, having the same sort of crust that you get by pan frying in butter. The big difference is that you don’t need any oil to achieve the same effect, while the inside remains moist.

Another win for the air fryer is its speed and efficiency. We found the Philips Viva Collection Airfryer is definitely quicker for cooking a pack of assorted chicken pieces than firing up the oven. Plus, itll do a great job on cooking vegetables too and with practice you can synchronise the production of a whole meal inside the unit.

It does away with a pile of prep dishes, plus pots and pans. As for cleaning the appliance then the removable drawer and food basket are dishwasher safe. The main electrical unit, obviously, isn’t, but you can wipe the black plastic casing over with a wet cloth no probs.

Philips Viva Collection Airfryer Review: Finger

Philips Viva Collection Airfryer cooks like a dream but doesn’t take up much space

Philips Airfryer HD9621 is so simple to use but turns out perfectly cooked air fried food in rather more manageable portions than its larger Philips relative, the Airfryer XXL. Same quality, less quantity and brilliant taste.

As weve already established with our review of the larger Philips Airfryer XXL, this is a company that likes to baffle with its product numbers. This model is therefore the Philips Airfryer HD9621/91 Viva Collection in the UK, but there are other very similar relatives in the range it would seem. In the USA the nearest match we can find is the Philips HD9621/96 TurboStar Airfryer. Okay. Just to make it a bit more confusing, the 9621 now seems to have been replaced by the 9721 in the UK. Got that? Good.

Youll need a little bit of practice to really get the best from it, but thats par for the course with an air fryer. Once mastered, however, an air fryer can be a real must-have gadget for the kitchen and removes the need for using the oven in most cases.

    Adjustable Time And Temperature Control

Philips Viva Collection Airfryer – FR

Its integrated timer allows you to pre-set cooking times of up to 30 minutes. The auto-off function includes a “ready” sound indicator. Fat Removal Technology = Less Fat Content

Philips claim their TurboStar fat removal technology removes more fat from food by creating a powerful tornado inside the unit during cooking. This results in excess fat collecting in the fat reducer a removable part with a starfish design that sits in the bottom of the air fryer.

Admittedly, we havent tested this with a side-by-side comparison but all we will say, anything that reduces the fat content of the food we eat, while at the same time maintaining the taste is only a good thing! I think we safely assume that youll be consuming way less fat than if you use a conventional deep fryer.

Betrayed By Wings And Other Taste Tests

The Philips Viva was able to make crispy fries from fresh cut potatoes, but it took awhile.

Once it’s heating, the Philips Viva Airfryer functions much like a convection oven. The heated coil sits above the cook pan and a fan helps circulate the hot air. Don’t expect to be able to multitask like you can with an Instant Pot and don’t expect the food to actually taste like it came from a deep fryer.

Fresh foods tended to taste like they came out of an oven, albeit in less time because the air fryer can heat its smaller cavity more quickly. The Viva’s quite good at rapidly heating up frozen snacks like pizza rolls and mozzarella sticks, but so was every other air fryer we tested.

To test the Philips Viva, I cooked frozen fries, fresh cut fries, burgers, chicken wings , pizza rolls and mozzarella sticks. The Viva successfully cooked everything I threw at it, but its relatively small capacity and low power meant it tended to take longer than other models we tested. It took 25 minutes to cook a pair of burgers, and the $70 Simple Chef Air Fryer completed the same test in 20.

The Viva made great mozzarella sticks, but so did every other air fryer.

In general, if you’re cooking near the upper end of the manual’s listed capacity, you’ll need to allow more cooking time than the manual suggests. I cooked 23 ounces of frozen fries for 25 minutes and they were just starting to crisp.
