Is It Worth Buying An Air Fryer

Don't Miss

Is It Worth The Price

Is this INSIGNIA AIR FRYER worth buying?

As long as were being blunt, no.

Its expensive. For Black Friday on Amazon it was $175, but the regular price hovers around $250. For that price, you could get an Apple watch or a years supply of Kettle Chips for all the crispiness you could ever want.

A convection toaster oven where you could actually see the food cooking would seem to be more convenient than the constant opening and closing, wondering if its cooked yet, feeling like a child perpetually asking if were there yet?

Ive searched all over the internet and the air fryer that keeps coming up as the hot and new one to get is the Cosori Air Fryer.

Even though I already had 2 air fryers, I was intrigued enough to try it out on my own. I used my own money to buy this air fryer and this review and opinions are completely my own. This post is in no way sponsored by Cosori.

Yes, thats right. I now have 3 air fryers and I cant complain!

I will be a big spoiler and say I completely love the Cosori Air Fryer and recommend it as a first air fryer purchase or even as an upgrade.

I love it so much I currently use it for most of the recipeson Everyday Family Cooking.

Cuisinart Airfryer Toaster Oven

Next up was the Cuisinart AirFryer Toaster Oven . This is a big machine! It definitely took up more counter space than we had to spare, but its stainless steel, nicely designed and still very easy to use, which is what youd hope for with a kitchen appliance like this. Think of it as more like an impressively multi-functional countertop oven: You can definitely roast a whole small chicken in it, or bake a round 9 cake , and the fact that it also has convection and air fryer settings is pretty cool. The instruction booklet comes with a wide range of recipes to give you a sense of its capabilitieslike roasting, broiling, toastingbut for the purpose of our experiment I only made fries. This oven can cook up to 2 lbs of french fries at a time, and I found that at the recommended 450 F it only took 12-15 minutes to get crispy fries.

Should You Buy An Air Fryer

Do you need an air fryer? Is it worth buying? What are the reasons for having one? These are all questions I’ve been asked lately, and they’re the same questions I asked myself before I bought one. Here are my opinions about the advantages and disadvantages to consider before buying an air fryer.

What Cant You Cook In An Air Fryer

Is Air Fryer Worth Buying Pros And Cons Of Air Fryer

You wont be able to fry items in a wet, homemade batter, although if you adjust your recipe, you can fry items in a homemade breadcrumb mix. Cheesy items should also be avoided. Batter and cheese will just melt into a gloopy mess under the tray in your air fryer.

There are better ways to cook broccoli and similar vegetables, which can dry out or wind up soggy. Leafy veg can be blown around and may not cook evenly.

Dry food coated in seasoning will end up losing its seasoning as it cooks.

And if you like a rare burger or steak, forget it. By the time the outside has browned, the inside of the meat will be well done.

That being said, there are recipes for all kinds of air-fried foods, including some of the above, so technique is important and you may just have to experiment to see what works for you.

  • You want to consume fewer calories
  • You like a variety in your diet
  • You are bored of cooking and need a little excitement in the kitchen
  • You dont like to heat up your oven for a small meal
  • MAYBE you dont have a stove/oven

Air Fryers Are More Expensive Than Deep Fryers

Yes, this is completely true. But can you also prepare a steak, fish, vegetables, bread, cake, eggs or a whole chicken in your deep fryer? I dont think so.

Again, an air fryer is a more healthy alternative for a deep fryer. But it is also an alternative for a small oven, a wok pan and baking pan. This makes an air fryer a versatile kitchen appliance that can prepare all kinds of foods. This makes it, in my opinion, worth the extra money you have to pay for an air fryer compared to a deep fryer.

I have to agree that some air fryers are quite expensive. Think about the Philips Airfryer XXL, most people cant justify for themselves to pay over 200 dollars for a deep fryer. But I do think especially Philips Airfryers are worth the extra money. That is because the Philips Airfryer is the original air fryer. It is the machine that offers the best air frying results, has the largest selection of accessories and has a big community of air fryer fans all over the world where air fryer recipes and experiences are shared daily.

TIP:

But, when you just want to buy a new deep fryer for deep frying your food. You dont really see the advantage of the health benefits and dont want to use all the extra possibilities of an air fryer. Then you are better of buying a more budget-friendly deep fryer that uses oil instead of hot air. It is up to you of course.

Air Fryers Can Be Loud And Noisy

Power Air Fryer Oven… Is it Worth Buying? 1 year Review Update

Air fryers use a ventilator to suck in air which circulates inside the pan of the air fryer when it leaves the air fryer though the rear exhaust. This makes quite some noise, and the amount of noise an air fryer makes differs between the models. But I can say that you can definitely can hear an air fryer when it is turned on.

You can compare the sound of a turned on air fryer with the sound of a hair dryer, a vacuum cleaner or an extractor hood. I dont find the sound an air fryer makes very annoying, but it is something to be aware of. Especially when you want to use your air fryer in an open kitchen or when you want to talk with someone in the same area where your air fryer is located.

When you do find the produced noise a bit annoying, you can always place your air fryer in a closed off area. Such as your garage or scullery when you have one in your home.

Some digital air fryer also make loud beeping noises. I have a few air fryers that produce very loud beeping sound when you adjust the timer, temperature or other settings. This noise is also produced when the air fryer has reached the desired temperature, or when the timer is finished.

What Is The Best Air Fryer To Buy

We put five machines through their paces, and two came out on top. Both Gourmia and Philips brands cooked golden fries and a pound of cornmeal-crusted chicken drumsticks to our ideal level of crispness. They cooked these foods as well as a standard oven, but in half the overall time. Plus, both brands surprised us by cooking an 8-ounce salmon fillet perfectly.

Should You Get A Digital Air Fryer Over Analog Meh Not Really

This depends on your personal preference but the controls don’t have much to do with the performance or end result. Digital air fryers have presets for things like chicken wings, french fries, fish and such, but I find that even if the presets exist, it takes me just a few runs to learn how long things need and the correct temperatures, and I end up bypassing them anyways. Digital air fryers tend to cost a bit more and you run the risk of the panel shorting out, but having a digital readout of the temp and cook time can be nice.

Are Air Fryers A Healthier Way To Cook

It really depends on what youre comparing them against.

If youre going to use your air fryer to cook items like oven-ready, batter-coated or crumb-coated fish, chicken nuggets or oven chips, they wont make the items any healthier than cooking them in the oven.

But, if you were planning to deep- or shallow-fry food, youll save yourself a big calorie hit.

Deep fryers can use up to 50 times more oil than an air fryer. And although your food will only absorb a relatively small proportion of that oil, deep frying is still the most calorie-dense way to cook.

Frying food also produces acrylamide, a compound linked to cancer development. Air-frying may help to lower the amount of acrylamide in the food you cook. However, it wont affect the formation of other harmful compounds associated with cooking foods at very high temperatures.

Youll still also need to use some oil if youre cooking fresh food, although itll only be between a teaspoon and a tablespoon if you’re making food from scratch. Pre-prepared items such as oven chips and nuggets wont need added oil.

Are Air Fryers Worth It

Is Air Fryer worth buying or not / T

A few months back, I went to a kitchen appliance trade show and was surprised by the large number of manufacturers coming out with air fryers. “Enjoy great tasting fried food” reads the cover recipe booklet for Philip’s new Airfryer XXL, a lovely sounding idea. With their focus on faux fried flavor, an aversion to fat, and an emphasis on convenience in the marketing from almost every manufacturer, the rise of air fryers felt like the second coming of the George Foreman Grill.

Honestly, though, I was suspicious. Wasn’t air frying more of a tweaked version of baking than a luxurious, crisp-making wallow in hot oil?

I called in one of Philips new XXL models, which is both large and a good representative of the best of the industry’s offerings.

The spuds were good but that was more of a sour cream, cheddar, and chives thing than an air fryer thing. Clearly, more testing was in order.

An air fryer would be flattened in a mano-a-mano with a real Fryalator and its big tub of hot oil.

Let’s be clear, though: an air fryer would be flattened in a mano-a-mano with a real Fryalator and its big tub of hot oil. Few of us deep fry at home, though, as it involves that huge amount of hot oil which you have to deal with after dinner. So does air frying bring us close enough to the ideal to take the plunge?

“Hell,” I thought. “I’ll bite.”

The Air Fryer Can Look After Itself

It is not like your ordinary oven or grill or stove that you need to stay the whole time that you are cooking. After the temperature and timer have been set, you can go about doing your other tasks in the house. It will do the cooking, even if you are not around. It does not require that you stir the contents of the frying basket, while it cooks to make sure of even crisping. Also, the food will not over fry, because once the time set has been reached, the air fryer will automatically turn itself off.

If you cant stop yourself from shaking or turning the pieces over during the cycle, that is alright. The air fryer will pause once you open the section and you check how the cooking progresses and then close it again. The air fryer will then restart to continue the process.

My Toaster Oven Is Nearly As Good As An Air Fryer

Everyone raves about brussels sprouts in the air fryer so I decided to try an experiment. I cooked three batchesone in the air fryer, one in my toaster oven with the convection feature, and one in my standard oven.

The air-fried sprouts were the best. They were perfectly browned and crisped on the outside and tender but not mushy on the inside. And they were the fastest to finish, ready in about 20 minutes.

The standard oven was subpar. It took a long time to preheat, and then a long time to cook the sprouts I probably should have cranked its heat up higher than 350 degrees. By the time the sprouts were brown on the outside they were too soft on the inside.

But the convection toaster oven delivered results nearly as good as the air fryer. It needed a few minutes to heat up, but it was hot by the time I was finished slicing the sprouts and tossing them in a little oil and salt. And it took five minutes longer for the sprouts to brown and crisp, but the flavor and consistency was comparable.

Plus, it was much quieter than the air fryer, and I already have it and use it, so it doesnt take up any more space in my kitchen. And the trays I used for cooking the sprouts only take as much room as two dinner plates in my dishwasher. For me, as much as I wanted to love the air fryer, the toaster oven comes out on top.

Solo Air Fryer: Best For Most People

The most basic of air fryers looks like a small robot. They are generally just a cylindrical base with a basket to hold the food that pulls in and out. These come as small as two quarts and can be as big as six or seven. These models come with digital controls or manual dials. There are also air fryers with dual compartments so you can make two types of food at different temps simultaneously. Ninja makes a particularly good one with two 4-quart cooking baskets .

Solo air fryers are the least expensive too, and they can be had for as little as $30. I’d say if you just want to try air frying but don’t want to commit a lot of money or kitchen space, opt for one of these.

Ninja’s basic air fryer oven is one the best we’ve tested.

Air Fryers Are Too Small For Larger Families

I have all kinds of air fryers at home to test out. I have small ones, medium sized ones and also the larger XXL air fryers. And I have to say that it is true that even the large XXL air fryers are too small to make food for a larger household of around five persons. I think a Philips Airfryer XXL has a maximum cooking capacity for around 3 to 4 people. When you only make fries or make a whole chicken, you might have enough for maybe 5 persons. But when you make a whole meal with the air fryer, you have enough for 3 to 4 people max.

Sadly air fryers cant get any bigger than the ones that are currently on the market. A larger capacity pan than we are used to now will downgrade the cooking results. The reason for this is that the air circulation will lose its power to fry your dish the way it does in a smaller capacity pan. This is also one of the reasons why there are no professional or commercial air fryers on the market right now.

Sometimes I use more than one air fryer in the kitchen. I use one air fryer for making grilled cauliflower and another air fryer to make some baked potatoes and some chicken. But be aware that air fryers require quite a lot electricity, so make sure your wall outlets can handle multiple turned on air fryers at once.
