To Soak Or Not To Soak

One question that came up when I was testing this recipe was whether soaking the fries in water was necessary before air frying. In theory, soaking can help to remove some of the potato starch, yielding crispier fries.

I did a side by side taste test of fries soaked for one hour in cool water before cooking and no soak fries. The results? My family and I did not notice a difference in crispiness between the soak and no soak fries. So for convenience and to save time, this recipe does not call for soaking the fries.

If youre looking for a make ahead option, however, soaking is the way to go. You can cut the fries up to 24 hours in advance and store them in a bowl of water in the refrigerator. The water will prevent the fries from browning. Just be sure to dry the fries really well before air frying.

Which Air Fryer Is Best

The best air fryer for making crispy french fries is a basket-style air-fryer. After reading lots of Amazon reviews, I landed on buying a NuWave model about 3 years ago.

Heres how the other air fryers Ive tried compare:

  • Instant Vortex. This basket style air fryer is great for making crispy french fries. The only con is that most basket-style air fryers like this one smell like hot plastic the first few times you use it. Luckily, the smell goes away, and I find myself using the basket-style air fryer more than the others I own, especially with the fast reheat button.
  • Breville Air Fryer. This is my second-favorite air fryer, mostly because of all the other functions it offers, like dehydrating, proofing, keep warm, bake, etc. It doesnt get things as crispy compared to the basket-style air fryer, but thats a benefit when it comes to roasting vegetables, I think.
  • Cuisinart Air Fryer. This one is slightly more affordable than the Breville Air Fryer, but it tends to run very hot you might want to adjust the temperature by as much as 50ºF lower than what recipes call for. As a result, it does tend to get food slightly crispier than the Breville does.

When my first air fryer arrived in the mail my initial reaction was, Wow, this is huge! Its roughly the same size as my 8-quart Instant Pot, so its not a small appliance that will live on my countertop permanently.

How Many Fries Does This Recipe Make

You start out with 1 ½ pounds of potatoes, but I weighed my fries once all was said and done and ended up with 11 ounces of fries. The USDA says 3 ounces or 12-15 fries is the recommended serving size.

I didnt count the fries because there are all different sizes and it could vary quite a bit, so weight seemed like more accurate info for you.

Best Air Fryer Fries Tips

  • Work in batches. Its essential that you spread the potatoes in a single layer in the air fryer basket and that you leave a little space between each one. If theyre too crowded, the potatoes will steam inside the air fryer, and they wont get crispy. In order to give them adequate space, youll likely need to work in batches. When I use 2 russet potatoes, I cook 3 batches of fries.
  • Not crispy yet? Keep cooking! The exact timing will vary based on your particular air fryer. I recommend checking your first batch at the 12 minute mark and adjusting your timing based on how they look at that stage. If theyre still not crispy, continue cooking until they crisp up.
  • When it comes to doneness, taste is more important than appearance. Ive found that my air fryer French fries start to look done before they actually are done. Taste a fry from each batch to make sure its tender on the inside and crisp on the outside before you move on to a new batch.
  • Toss them all in together at the end. Because youll be working in batches, some of the fries will have to sit around for a bit before you finish cooking. No one likes cold, soggy fries, so toss all the fries into the air fryer together for 1 to 2 minutes before you eat. This quick step will reheat the fries from the earlier batches and make them nice and crispy. Yum!

Are Air Fryer French Fries Healthy

Compared to deep-fried french fries and oven-baked french fries yes! Because the air fryer uses less oil, these fries are lower in calories and contain less fat.

If you want to make them even healthier, you can try using less oil or salt with your fries, but that will also make them a bit less flavorful and you may not get them as crispy.

As an alternative that doesnt sacrifice flavor or texture, you can use a healthier cooking oil. I use organic avocado oil myself and it works great. You can learn more about which cooking oils are healthiest in this post.

  • tip 1 Air fryer temperature control settings vary according to brand and model. If your air fryer does not have the exact temperature setting called for in the recipe, consult your manual for suggested temperature settings.
  • tip 2 Our recipes do not call for preheating your air fryer. Just set the temperature, and start.
  • tip 3 If potato sticks are longer than 4 inches, they can be difficult to redistribute in the air fryer basket when shaking. We recommend cutting extra-long potato sticks in half crosswise.
  • tip 4 Shaking the air fryer basket during the cooking process redistributes potatoes and helps ensure evenly browned French fries.
  • tip 5 If you like salty French fries, feel free to sprinkle extra salt on fries as soon as they come out of the air fryer.

Rinse And Soak The Potatoes

Rinsing the sliced potatoes only takes a couple of minutes. You will notice the water is cloudy when you first add it to the potatoes. Then after the 2nd or 3rd time, the water remains clear.

After the rinsing, just cover the potatoes with hot tap water and let soak for 10 minutes. This rinsing and soaking helps to remove excess starch. Removing the excess starch helps us get the potatoes nice and crispy.

Toss The Potatoes In A Separate Bowl

I find it easier to toss the potatoes in a bowl rather than the air fryer basket, so thats part of why theres so much transferring back and forth. Less broken fries when tossing in the bowl too.

After you toss them the first time, put them into the air fryer basket for the first cooking phase, and set aside the bowl for later.

What Should You Season These With

Air Fryer Frozen French Fries

Some oil is necessary for these Air Fryer French Fries, but a good spray will do. Use the cooking oil spray of choice that you prefer.

Personally, I use Pompeian Olive Oil Cooking Spray regularly however, if you prefer a higher heat spray, go with grapeseed oil cooking spray.

Once done with the spray, I like to do a quick seasoning with salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder.

This is easy to adjust though to what you have on hand or what you prefer. I also enjoy making these with garlic and herb seasoning too, it gives them even more of a savory flavor.

Crispy French Fries In Under 30 Minutes Without Deep

I have long contended that potatoes, like eggs, are one of the most perfect foods. But for different reasons, of course.

My professed love for potatoes means I am always trying to find ways to prep them and cook them as quickly as possible.

What if there were a way to achieve crispy-on-the-outside, soft-on-the-inside French fries in less than a half an hour? If I told you that it was possible to pull this off without the mess or hassle of deep frying potatoes, would you believe me?

Well there is a way and, yes, its true. Enter the air fryer.

    How To Make Crispy Fries

Air Fryer French Fries – Ultra Crispy Recipe!

Step 1. The key to getting ultra-crispy french fries is to soak the cut potatoes in water for 10 minutes, to help remove some of their starch content. This helps the centers get tender, and the outsides get crispy!

The air fryer does an exceptional job of helping the process along, though, so if you dont have time to soak your sliced potatoes, its not a deal-breaker when you use the air fryer. They really do get crispy regardless!

I tested them both ways, just to be sure.

Step 2. If you soaked the fries, be sure to dry them well, then toss with a drizzle of olive oil and your favorite seasonings. I use garlic powder and salt to keep things easy.

Step 3. Arrange the seasoned potato slices in a single layer in the air fryer. Dont try to make more fit, or they will end up soggy! I usually have to cook these in two batches, but you can throw them all in together at the end to make sure all of the fries are piping hot when you serve them.

Which Potato Is Best For Air Fryer French Fries

When it comes to which potato to use for air fryer French fries, you have two options: Yukon gold potatoes and russet potatoes. Each will yield a different result.

    • Russet potatoes resulted in fries that were crispy outside, drier inside, and tasted most similar to fries you would eat in a restaurant.
    • Yukon gold potatoes resulted in fries that were equally crispy outside, but that had a firmer, creamier inside. Thanks to their naturally buttery taste, the French fries made with Yukon golds also had a richer flavor.

While Yukon golds are my favorites for Oven Roasted Potatoes and Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes, when it came to making a healthy version of classic French fries in the air fryer, russet potatoes did the best job.
