How Long To Cook Homemade Tortilla Chips In Air Fryer

Homemade tortilla chips | so easy in an air fryer!

Tortilla chips in the air fryer take about 7 minutes at 400 degrees. The time will depend on how many chips you put in your air fryer and how crispy you like your chips. The chips should be spread out evenly, only overlapping a little, to make sure they cook evenly and dont steam. The more chips you have, the longer they will take. Adjust the time according to how crispy you like your chips, but we careful not to burn them .

Cook The Healthy Tortilla Chips

To air-fry tortilla chips

Preheat your air fryer to 350ºF/175ºC this usually takes just 4-5 minutes.

Then place a single layer of tortilla chips in your air fryer basket this will need to be done in batches to avoid too much overlapping.

Cook for between 4-6 minutes. Test one at the 56-minute mark, and if they need a little longer, then keep an eye on them for a further minute or so.

Remember that they will crisp up further as they cool, and each air fryer can vary with cooking times, so you may need to adjust the times slightly. I dont find it necessary to shake/turn the tortilla chips at the halfway point, but feel free to do so if preferred .

Allow the chips to cool on a wire rack they will continue to get crunchier as they cool. I like to make mine a couple of hours at least before serving

For oven-baked tortilla chips

Place the tortilla chips in a single layer across a baking tray. I like to use a wire tray so air can fully circulate around the chips.

Bake in a preheated oven at 350ºF/175ºC for 7-8 minutes. This may be increased to 10 minutes based on the oven tray you use and your oven.

Once ready, allow the homemade corn tortilla chips to cool to crisp up further before enjoying.

    Selecting The Right Tortillas

Air fryer tortillas work best with thinner corn tortillas. They end up becoming crunchier and lighter. Sometimes these tortillas are labeled extra thin or extra soft. You’ll notice immediately how much more pliable they are than regular corn tortillas. You can bend them without having to heat them, and they don’t easily crack either.

My favorite tortilla is the yellow corn extra thin/extra soft tortillas by Mission brand. I have found they work the best. Stay away from the thicker, more artesian-style tortillas. While I love them for things like my Carne Asada Tacos, they don’t do well as tortilla chips. They are too thick and end up creating a really hard chip.

    • I use red chili powder in this recipe which is very mild. But, if you are serving it to kids, then I suggest you opt out of it. If your kids can handle spice, then go for it.

    • If using the large or grande tortillas, then cut them into smaller pieces because they will cook faster.
    • You can make garlic flavored by adding garlic powder to the olive oil and setting it aside for about 15 minutes or overnight, if you can. Then, drizzle that on the tortilla chips before putting it in the air fryer.
