Healthy French Fries In The Air Fryer
As long as you dont eat the whole basket and stick to a reasonable serving size, these french fries totally are healthier than oil-fried potatoes. Just think of the comparison here: two teaspoons of oil for a pound of fries vs at least 1 cup of oil need for frying. Thats a huge difference in oil and calories. And if you want even less calories than the 2 teaspoons, try using an organic olive oil cooking spray.

What Kind Of Oil To Use
I used a combination of expeller pressed canola and coconut oil, which I typically use for skillet cooking and roasting veggies. Any kind of vegetable oil would work.
Keep in mind that if you use olive oil the potatoes will brown more quickly without necessarily being cooked all the way through. I did not enjoy that.
You only need about a tablespoon or so of oil, tossed to coat, in order to help crisp up the potatoes.

Prepping The Potatoes For Crispy Homemade French Fries
The first thing is to use large Russet Potatoes to make fresh French Fries. I used 2 potatoes, washed them well and sliced them into medium strips evenly. Peeling potatoes or not is a personal choice. I have tried both ways and it works well.
Now soak the potatoes in water for about 15 minutes. This helps remove some of the starch content and get crispy fries. That said, if you don’t have enough time, you can skip this step. I tried without soaking and the result was still very good. I think the Air Fryers do a good job of crisping the fries either way!
Pat dry the sliced potatoes with a paper towel. Now season the potatoes. I like to add salt, pepper and garlic powder to my fries. Add some olive oil or another oil of your choice. This helps the seasoning stick to the fries. Toss well to coat the potatoes with the seasoning.

What Is Air Frying
An air fryer is a counter top appliance that requires less oil yet produces crispy food that rivals most deep fried foods. By using circulating hot air, it moves at a high speed so the food tends to cook in a fraction of the time.
There are a bunch of different makes and models of air fryers. My husband did the research and found this air fryer to be one of the best. But do your research and purchase one that fits your lifestyle.
How To Air Fry French Fries
If youve never heard of an air fryer, its a bit like an Instant Pot – but for fried foods.
An air fryer is a medium sized kitchen appliance that is easy to use with a ton of different foods. Air fryers provide lightning quick cook times and easy cleanup – with about 2 tablespoons of oil instead of quarts like a traditional deep fryer.
Use Russet Potatoes. Russet potatoes give a classic french fry flavor. Leave skins on, but be sure to wash potatoes well and scrub off any excess dirt, remove any eyes or bruises.
Use a mandoline to cut fries. Cut potatoes with a mandoline for easy, perfect sticks that will crisp up well.
Soak fries. Make sure your fries soak for at least one hour in a large bowl of cold water – preferably changing the water after 20 minutes or 30 minutes with fresh new cold water. Soaking in water helps remove some of the starch, which will help them crisp up better!
Dry fries well after soaking. Make sure your fries are very very dry after soaking. Pat them with paper towels or a clean dish towel to be sure there is no residual moisture.Wet fries = soggy fries.
Cook in Single Layer. Allowing fries to have room away from each other while air frying helps them cook faster and get crunchier. Fries that have plenty of space to cook should not stick to the air fryer basket and should come out with a gentile shaking of the basket.
This also lets any excess oil drip off, and prevents fries from becoming cold or soggy.

How To Prep Your Potatoes
I did not peel the potatoes because I like the texture the skin offers, but you can peel them if you want. I also think they taste better with the skin on, and you lose some vitamins when you peel them.
I cut them into 1/2-inch or so wedges, maybe a little smaller or bigger, give or take 1/8 of an inch. Just know that the thinner you slice them the more quickly they will fry upyou might have to shave a couple minutes off the fry time if they are skinny.

Tips To Soak Or Not To Soak
While I was doing my internet research for making Air Fryer French fries, I was surprised to see how many people were soaking them in water first.
With a hefty dose of ignorance and confidence, I charged ahead with making some fries pretty much as soon as my Air Fryer was delivered . This was pre-internet-research, so I was not aware that people were soaking them.
And yall! I did not even peel my potatoes. I just sliced them up and made them like I always did in the oven pre-Air Fryer.
And you know what? I dont think I will ever bother with soaking them. I like them just as they are!

Tips For Crispy Fries
For best results, always preheat the air fryer. When any food is added to the basket, the hot air immediately seals the outside guaranteeing a crispy exterior.
Avoid overcrowding the air fryer so the hot air can circulate around all sides of the fries.
If cooking in batches, keep fries warm in the oven. Prior to serving, add all batches back to the air fryer for 2 minutes to crisp and heat.

Tips For The Best Air Fryer French Fries
This has to be one of the least complicated recipes out there, but that doesnt mean a few tips and tricks wont go a long way. Soon enough, they will be second nature.
- Cut similar-sized fries. To prevent chomping into raw or overcooked fries, make certain youre cutting similar-sized pieces.
- Soak raw fries in cold water. I cant stress the importance of this step enough. Soaking raw fries in cold water removes excess starch from potatoes and results in the most optimal crispiness. It also prevents sticking during the cooking process.
- Air fry in batches. It might be tempting to try and shove all of your fries in the air fryer at once. Beware: this will result in uneven cooking. Laying out your fries in a single layer will allow the ultra-hot, circulating air in the chamber to hit as much surface area as possible.
- Toss to cook evenly. Flipping your fries every 5 minutes will ensure no one side of the fry gets more direct heat than another.
- Remedying soggy fries. If your fries are limp and soggy after 15 minutes, give them a couple more 5 minute rounds of heat. Just be careful to watch them closely so they dont burn.
- Adjusting your cooking time. Depending on the model of your air fryer or the size of the fries, you may need to adjust your cooking time accordingly. The rule of thumb is thicker fries need more time and thinner fries need less. The first time you prepare this recipe, keep a watchful eye on your fries to see if you need to increase or decrease the cooking time.

Can I Cook Frozen French Fries In The Air Fryer
Because you are making frozen foods, the cooking process will be a little different. Also, making frozen food will save prep time. Add the frozen fries to the basket. You do not need to coat the basket with oil, since frozen fries are pre-cooked, and shouldn’t stick. Cook at 400 degrees F for about 10-15 minutes. Season with salt if necessary.
What Kind Of Potatoes To Use
I tried this recipe a couple of times with both Russets and Yukon golds. Both turned out good quality fries, but the Russets are clearly the superior potato for frying, which is my direct opposite preference for roasting potatoes.
The interior of Russet potatoes turns just the way you want ita bit fluffy and softwhereas the exterior stays crispy.
And theyre the right size for fries, too. If you can select them individually rather than buying a bag, Id recommend trying to find the longest ones you cansmaller, more round potatoes are going to make stubby fries that wont permit a whole lot of interaction with ketchup or whatever you condiment of choice happens to be.
You could probably also use red potatoes, but they dont tend to be long enough to turn them into the classic fry shape, so I skipped those for this recipe.

What Potato Is Best For Making French Fries
Russet potatoes are the best choice for making extra thick fries. The potatoes, also known as Idaho potatoes, have a rather thick skin, fluffy flesh, and high starch content. That combination allows them to hold up well when cooking in direct heat, especially in the air fryer.
Since the potatoes have such a mild flavor, I toss them in a blend of smoked paprika and garlic powder. This adds to the overall flavor and makes them perfect for dipping into ketchup or ranch.
