Which One Is Faster

Cuisinart® | Compact Air Fryer Toaster Oven TOA-28

Due to the way they work, most air fryers should be set to around 20-30C cooler than regular ovens, with the overall cooking time reduced by about 20 per cent. This rough guide is based on reading things like packet instructions for regular fan ovens. If youre using a dedicated air fryer recipe , then theres no need to convert anything.

Its important to note that while air fryers are faster, youll need to open the drawer and shake up the basket contents at least once during a cook to ensure even, crisp results for every item. This means that you might find yourself babysitting food while it cooks instead of simply walking away and letting it do its thing.

What About Using A Full

For the record, you can get similar air-fried results when cooking food in a full-size oven with convection. But because a full-size oven is so much larger than a toaster oven or an air fryer, it takes much longer to preheat and can take longer to cook food. The Cuisinart TOB-260N1 toaster oven preheats almost immediately, making it the better choice if speed is part of what appeals to you about an air fryer.

If You Want To Try An Air Fryer

The options above provide great alternatives to a stand-alone air fryer. But if you dont have a range or toaster oven with convection, let alone a dedicated air-fry setting, then a stand-alone air fryer is still your cheapest and easiest route to golden veggies and crispy fries. The models below deliver just that.

How Much Energy Does An Air Fryer Use

Air fryers are electric appliances, so we can use the same methodology as above to find the operating cost. The wattage for air fryers varies and larger models will use more energy, but a standard 4-quart fryer such as this Ninja uses about 1,500 watts.

Considering that’s exactly half the wattage pull of the average full-size oven from our stove calculation, we can project that the air fryer will use roughly half as much electricity to operate.

Using New York’s electricity prices, we safely say a standard 4-quart air fryer will cost about 25 cents per hour to run. That’s 50% more energy-efficient than the average full-size electric oven and about 35% more efficient than the average gas oven .

Ninja’s 4-quart air fryer oven is one of the best we’ve tested.

The answer won’t be the same for everyone since energy costs vary by state in the US. Oven efficiency also varies and newer models tend to use less gas or electricity. For this exercise, we’ll use some averages and estimates to assess how much you can potentially save if you fire up the air fryer instead of the oven. Oh, and saving money on energy is just one of many reasons we think air fryers are a worthwhile investment. More on that in a bit.

What Can You Cook

Air fryers can cook practically anything, though there are some limits. While you can cook entire chickens with delicious, juicy results, their smaller overall size can be problematic if, for example, you wanted to cook up a giant platter of crispy wings.

Thats because items ideally need to be spread across the bottom of the basket in a single layer for even results. Due to their smaller footprint compared to ovens, this means wings and other items need to be cooked in batches, which might be inconvenient depending on how many hungry mouths you have to feed.

Air Fryers Cook Much Faster Than Big Ovens

Because of the smaller cooking chamber and superconvection , air fryers generally cook foods much faster than your traditional gas or electric stove. Often in about half the time it takes to make a similar recipe in a full oven.

Below are some examples of cooking times for air fryer versus stove. The cooking website Taste of Home compiled a list of average air fryer cooking times for popular foods. We compared those with standard cooking times pulled from Food Network recipes for oven-baked or oven-roasted versions of those foods.

What Is An Air Frying Oven

Air Fryer Toaster Oven Demo (TOA-60)

By now, were all relatively well-versed in the world of air frying, including which air fryers are the best, what recipes you should cook in them and potentially, most importantly whether or not they really are the secret to healthier eating.

Overall, an air fryer functions by crisping and cooking food with circulated, heated air with little-to-no oil compared to typical deep frying. While countertop air fryers are great for quickly preparing smaller batches of food or cooking without heating up your kitchen, they’re not ideal for big-batch cooking or air frying an entire turkey for example. This is where an air fryer oven comes into play. You can achieve the same results you love from a countertop air fryer in your oven which gives you another level of versatility.

How Do Air Fry Functions In Ovens Work

Air fry ovens are essentially convection ovens equipped with air fry trays.

All countertop air fryerswhether they look like mysterious black plastic cubes or regular toaster ovensuse the same basic technology: electric heating elements, convection fans, and frying trays or baskets. The convection fans quickly and evenly circulate hot air throughout the interior of the fryer to make your favorite foods crispy without being submerged in oil. (If youre interested in learning even more, we have more detailed explanations of how air fryers work and how they compare to baking.

Because of their convection technology, air fryers are often described as miniature convection ovens. If we follow that logically, an air fryer the size of an oven would be just thata convection oven. So when we talk about the air fry function on the latest Frigidaire Gallery ranges, were really talking about a specialized convection setting designed to maximize heat circulation and crisp up your food.

The size of these ranges is important to consider. While countertop air fryers are small and can heat quickly, full ranges require longer heat times and may take longer to crisp up foods than small air fryers. So if speed is top of mind, an oven with an air fryer setting might not be as appealing as a regular countertop appliance.

Now, onto recipe conversions for air fry settings!

When following recipes for conventional ovens, the formula is this: Reduce the temperature by 25 degrees and reduce the cook time by about 20 percent. To calculate the latter, multiply the cook time in minutes by 0.8. The resulting number is the estimated number of minutes it will take your air fry oven range to churn out your food. And, as is the case for convection ranges, be sure to check your user manual for automated temperature settings.

What Is Air Frying Anyway And How Does It Work

Despite what it sounds like, air frying doesnt actually fry your food. Instead, air fryers are mini convection ovens that use fans to rapidly circulate hot air, cooking food faster and more evenly than a standard oven does.

Convection has been around for more than a century. The first commercially sold convection ovens were developed by the W. L. Maxson Corporation in the 1940s as a way to reheat frozen food for airplanes. And they worked much the same as todays air fryers and convection toaster ovens do: As the fan circulates hot air around the food, it crisps the outside in a way that mimics deep frying. But your tastebuds will tell you that air-fried food isnt anything like traditionally deep-fried food in flavor and texture.

How To Clean An Air Fryer Oven

Set a cookie sheet under the air fry platter to collect breadcrumbs or drips before utilising the air fry function. It will really keep the top of the oven clean and clear of any dropped particles that might later catch fire or generate smells. To keep the temperature circulating properly, avoid placing cookware straight on the ovens surface.

Although the air fry tray may be washed in the washer, we suggest doing so for best results. Its made to contain items that have previously been oiled, preventing food from adhering together.

How To Fry Food In A Toaster Oven

Convection toaster ovens can air-fry in the same way a convection oven can. We tested two models, one from Breville and one from Cuisinart, that have a dedicated air-fry setting. Both perform admirably, doing a great job with frozen curly fries and fresh chicken wings, though all-around performance is better in the Breville.

Both toaster ovens produce wings and fries in about the same time as the oven air fryers using 1 to 3 teaspoons of oil. But, of course, you cant fit in as many wings or fries as you can in an oven.

If you have a toaster oven that has convection but no air-fry setting, try using convection roast , and just as with an oven, use a dark pan to get the best crispy results.

The Philips Premium Airfryer HD9741/96 is the best pod-shaped air fryer weve tested. Its a far less versatile appliance than the Cuisinart convection toaster oven, but its smaller footprint may make it ideal for tiny kitchens with limited counter space. Smaller households that plan to make only one or two portions of food at a time may also prefer this model. Compared with other pod-shaped air fryers we tested, the Philips cooked food the most evenly, aside from the occasional soggy french fry on average, it cooked faster than most other models we tried and with better results. Like all pod-shaped air fryers, this Philips model isnt good for baking or making toastits fan is too powerful and produces overcooked, irregularly shaped cakes and wonky, unevenly browned toast. But if you dont plan to bake in it, we think its a suitable choice for cooking frozen snacks, smaller portions of meat and vegetables, or certain dishes you want extra crispy, like chicken wings or flautas.

Philips also sells a larger version of this air fryer, the Philips Premium Air Fryer XXL HD9650/96, which has a 7-quart capacity. We havent tested this specific model, but we did test its predecessor, the Philips Avance XL Airfryer HD9240/94. If youre able to fit the larger Philips model in your space, however, we think youre better off getting the Cuisinart toaster oven, as it is only about 5 inches wider than the Philips XXL air fryer yet is capable of so much more.

Air Frying Is Healthy Right

Air-frying is ingenious marketing it sounds so light, so fat-free, so noncaloric. But its not healthy by default. Yes, the air fryer uses a lot less oil than deep-frying, but were you really deep-frying that much before? I do love that it makes roasted veggies and salmon in a flash, which maybe means Ill eat more of them. If youre looking to make some changes in your eating habits, Id suggest talking to a registered dietitian, not your toaster oven.
