Ingredients For Air Fryer Fries

5 Tips for PERFECT Air Fryer French Fries (Homemade)

As you can guess, there are not too many ingredients to this simple recipe. Pick your favorite brand and type of frozen french fries. These are so good, youll want to keep a few bags in the freezer so you always have them on hand.

  • Frozen French Fries: 16 oz bag is all you need. If you have a bigger bag youll need to cook them in batches.
  • Salt to Taste: I really like to use season salt here.
  • Olive Oil Spray: Just to help the salt stick to the fires.

How To Cook Frozen French Fries In An Air Fryer

You can also cook frozen french fries in the air fryer for even crispier results than you’d get in the oven.

Manalang advises lightly spraying them with oil, then spreading them out in a single layer and air frying at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes total, tossing or flipping at the halfway point.

If you want to kick the flavor up a notch, Mendoza suggests tossing your frozen fries in a seasoning blend like garlic parmesan or spicy cajun. Be sure to do this after cooking them so the spices stick.

What Makes This Recipe So Good

  • We love the simplicity and ease of cooking frozen french fries in an air fryer! Plus, theres no messy oil to deal with SO much nicer and easier than deep frying! The fries also come out perfectly crispy, which is not always the case if youre baking them in the oven.
  • You can season your fries with different seasonings for a more gourmet snack. Try garlic or onion powder, seasoned salt , or chipotle powder for fries with a kick.

How Long For Thick Cut Frozen Fries

We recommend starting with our base time and temp and follow the technique thats written in the recipe box below. Then check the fries and add additional 2-3 minutes if needed to your liking. Some frozen fries are already pre-cooked and some are more pre-cooked than others. Thats why we suggest starting with the base time and temp, then adjust accordingly to your personal preference.

Which Potato Is Best For Air Fryer French Fries

Air Fryer Frozen French Fries

When it comes to which potato to use for air fryer French fries, you have two options: Yukon gold potatoes and russet potatoes. Each will yield a different result.

  • Russet potatoes resulted in fries that were crispy outside, drier inside, and tasted most similar to fries you would eat in a restaurant.
  • Yukon gold potatoes resulted in fries that were equally crispy outside, but that had a firmer, creamier inside. Thanks to their naturally buttery taste, the French fries made with Yukon golds also had a richer flavor.

While Yukon golds are my favorites for Oven Roasted Potatoes and Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes, when it came to making a healthy version of classic French fries in the air fryer, russet potatoes did the best job.

Feel free to try both potatoes and pick your favorite! And you MUST try Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries at some point too!

How I Chose The Frozen Fries

Out of the many different kinds of frozen fries to choose from, we set out to find out which ones actually cook up as deliciously as the picture on the bag. For consistencys sake, I chose not to include any crinkle, curly, or waffle fries, or any big, thick, steak fry wedges. This was simply a test of straight-up fries . Some brands call them shoestring, others call them straight cut. Some are thicker than others, but all fit firmly within the classic fry category.

The most important lesson I learned throughout this long and tedious process: Dont overcrowd the pan. The more room you can give the fries, the more likely theyll cook up crispy outside and tender inside.

Are Frozen French Fries Healthy

I am going to have to go with a no on this one. Frozen french fries are still fried. They are usually cooked twice before arriving at your local grocery store. First, they get parboiled and then they are fried before going through the freezing process. But, if you normally deep fry your frozen fries, then the air frying method is definitely a healthier method.

Do I Need To Defrost Frozen French Fries Before Frying

No! Take it from me do not thaw the fries before air frying!

With all of the advice youve seen around the web about water being the enemy of a crispy crunchy finish, it may seem counter-intuitive to put frozen potatoes right into an air fryer.

However, freezing peeled, cut potatoes creates an outside seal that keeps the moisture inside the potato flesh.

Thawing your frozen fries will cause moisture to leak out and your fries wont crisp up properly.

Nobody wants a pile of mushy fries!

Toss them right into your air fryer and cook them at a high temperature, and youll have beautifully crisp fries in minutes!

The Problem With Frozen French Fries

In the Before Times , Id do what any normal person did back then, spreading frozen fries on a baking sheet and letting them bake for however long I had until I got too hungry to wait any longer.

Every once in a while, a unicorn would appear: perfectly golden fries that were tender on the inside and somehow required a cook time I could live with at the moment.

But more often than not, there were problems.

Generally speaking, I find the cook time is too darn long when baking frozen fries.

Also the results are spotty.

Im a fan of slightly browner and slightly crispier fries, and baking them in the oven always meant a fine balance between being too squishy and too crispy.

And then, of course, there was the stuck to the pan factor.

In my experience, unless you use enough oil to keep them loose, theyd stick to the baking sheet, and youd have to really work to get the fries loose, and then clean them. This is both annoying and unhealthy .

Crispy Air Fryer French Fries

Crispy French fries are delicious, but they can take several steps to make from scratch and they can be fairly high in calories when twice fried in oil. An air fryer enables you to make homemade or frozen fries with fewer steps and hardly any oil. They are crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside with fewer calories. Lets explore some things you need to know about cooking healthy French fries in an air fryer.

Top Tips For Air Fryer Frozen French Fries

  • You can adjust the cooking time depending on how crispy you like your fries or how thick they are. For softer or thinner fries, decrease time. For crispier or thicker fries, increase it.
  • If youre using an air fryer that doesnt rotate, toss your fries very, very well midway through. Make sure the fries that are sitting on the bottom of the bowl are scooped up to the top.
  • If your air fryer does rotate, be sure to check on them halfway to judge how thoroughly cooked they are.
  • Do not spray too much oil, or your fries will get mushy!
  • You dont have to preheat your air fryer, but be aware that your cooking time may be longer!
  • Try your fries with different seasonings for a more gourmet snack. Try garlic or onion powder, seasoned salt , or chipotle powder for fries with a kick.

Are Frozen French Fries In Air Fryer Healthy

Potatoes are a fat free, filling, and low calorie food, rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants! But they often get a bad rap as unhealthy and unhelpful for weight loss. Fries are especially considered a fast, junk food because theyre usually deep-fried and heavily salted, negating any health benefits.

Frozen French fries in the air fryer are a healthier way to prepare fries, while saving the added calories from traditional deep-frying. I find that the air fryer helps me control the salt and oil content, without compromising on that delicious crispy, fried, and salty taste.

How Long Do You Cook Frozen French Fries In The Air Fryer

Air Fryer French Fries – Food Wishes

It usually takes just 6-9 minutes to cook frozen French fries in the air fryer. However, the cook time depends on your brand of air fryer, the basket size, and how full you fill the basket with fries.

I use the Instant Brand Vortex Plus Air Fryer. This air fryer takes a couple minutes to preheat before it starts cooking time. If your air fryer also does this, check your air fryer french fries after 5 minutes.

These days, most frozen french fries have air fryer instructions on the actual bag. Start with those instructions, and adjust as you see how it works in your air fryer.

The biggest tip with making frozen fries in the air fryer is to ensure theyre in a single layer. Piling the frozen fries into the basket wont allow enough air flow between the fries to get them cooked and crispy.

Do You Have To Clean Air Fryer After Every Use

And those bits trapped in the baskets holes will keep on cooking and can burn to a crisp. Thats why you should clean your air fryer after every use. Our testers found that the nooks and crannies on some air fryer components are a bear to clean, and the crevices on the exterior take effort, too.

Do You Need To Oil Spray The Frozen Fries

You really dont need to add more oil to the already deep fried waffle fries. After air frying, youll see that the existing oil will release from the fries. But if you want more of the crispy oil taste, sure go ahead. We dont do it cause we dont think you need it. Other websites suggest spraying with oil before air frying, but maybe they like eating more greasy oil.
