Performance: Quick And Quiet But With A Learning Curve

With four heating elements on top and two at the bottom, the oven preheats super-fast. When using the bake function, the preheating time is included in the total time. For chocolate chip cookies, I set the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 11 minutes, and the oven was ready to go in less than 3 minutes. I made the mistake of not realizing that I only needed to put in the cookies, shut the door, and walk away. I pressed the start button again, which turned the oven off, and then I had to press start again. When I did this, the oven took another minute or so to preheat and come to temp. The cookies baked a lot faster than they do in my standard oven and had more browning on the edges.

I had the same results with French fries the first time I made them. They were slightly burnt at the edges. During the rest of the testing, I set the oven 25 degrees lower than my recipes required. Chicken wings turned out crisp from the outside and tender inside. The results were the same whether I used fresh wings or started with frozen. In the case of frozen wings, I sprayed some oil after about 10 minutes to give them the boost for that coloring and crispy texture. The French fries on my second try were fabulously crisp as were the purple sweet potato fries. Toasting bread and bagels resulted in uneven browning, so the oven definitely has hot spots. The oven also has settings in the control panel for previously frozen foods like fries, nuggets, and pizza.

Before a wide range of functions and unique cooking modes, the most important features of a good air fryer, for me, are fairly basic. The best air fryers need to have strong heating elements/fans, and an easy to use control panel.

When scouring the specs of a potential air fryer purchase its best to do a deep dive into the description section and hunt down the users manual if necessary. While most of the ovens on this list dial in at 1800 watts, and have an average of 4 heating elements, that doesnt necessarily mean a lot on its own.

A good air fryer blends a strong consistent heat profile, with great air circulation and a strong power level to create a very versatile convection oven. I always dive into the comments section and look for reviews that focus on the heating abilities as well as pictures of the dishes people have cooked. This will tell you a lot about how hot an oven can get.

While its easy to get hung up on the specifics, 4 versus 5 heating elements, or 1800 watts vs. 1500 watts, its important to look at the overall picture as well. I can tell you from experience that all the ovens on this list are high powered and well equipped, so you should also consider what other functions or design specifics you need.

The control panel for me is one of the most important pieces of the design package. There is little use for a ton of fun cooking functions if your oven cant do the basics well, like get hot and stay hot while moving air efficiently.

The overall design of the Cuisinart TOA-65 Digital Convection Toaster Oven is relatively similar to its little brother, the TOA-60, but with a more high-tech feel. In place of the analog dials found on the 60, are some stylish back-lit buttons and dials and a cool pale blue LCD.

The buttons and dials give reassuring feedback when you turn and press them, and the door is smooth to open.

Unlike the TOA-60, the stainless steel finish on the 65 extends all the way around the units body. There are vents on the back and side to help keep the appliance cool. There needs to be 2 to 3 inches of space between the vents and your walls/cabinets. The metal will get hot during use, but not so hot that youll suffer severe burns if you touch it.

2. Performance

Cooking chicken wings can be a challenge to get right. The air fryer cooks so quickly that youll need to keep an eye on the wings, so they dont burn. They can be difficult to fit in the basket and flip during cooking too. They take approximately 22 minutes at 400F, which is far faster than normal cooking methods, so be careful.

Cooking bacon is extremely fast and makes delicious crispy bacon. If you like it a little less crispy, this thing will cook bacon in just a couple of minutes. The TOA-65 also manages to cook bacon without producing plumes of smoke or setting off a smoke alarm.
