Cheese Can Create A Huge Mess In An Air Fryer
You also want to avoid putting cheese in an air fryer, according to Polak.
“An air fryer is not actually a fryer, so there isn’t the instant outer crust you would get from actually deep-frying cheese for, say, something like a mozzarella stick,” Polak told Insider. “Instead you’ll get a cheesy mess in your fryer.”
How We Tested Air Fryers
What is the first thing you think of when you consider air fryers? Chips, of course, so our homemade fries test was crucial.
The key to crisp fries was to peel and soak the potatoes in cold water for half an hour to remove starch, before drying thoroughly. We used Maris Piper potatoes for all.
We looked at the manuals for each model and followed their directions for cooking temperature, time and the quantity of oil needed. If the type of oil wasnt specified them we used vegetable.
Anything from the size of the cut to the variety of potato can make a difference here, so its always good to gauge things halfway through the time. But for the purpose of the test, we shook ingredients only when prompted too and scored the appliance based on its performance.
We tested the air fryers using set criteria and scored each one on the following core areas out of five. The average of all determined the overall star rating they achieved:
Quality of foodTo ensure fairness, we initially cooked chips in every fryer we tested. We looked at how evenly they fried and whether they were brown and crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.
Ease of useNo-one wants to resort to a YouTube video to work out how to use a new gadget. We looked for fryers with clear, simple instructions, so we could get them out of the box and cooking our dinner as quickly as possible. Fryers also scored highly if the icons or control buttons were easy to use and intuitive.
To Preheat Or Not To Preheat
That is the question.
Unlike the big oven on your range, an air fryer does not need a whole half hour to get to temp. A few minutes of preheating should do it. Some air fryer models have a light that indicates when the unit is preheated.
Manufacturers recommend preheating, but if you like, you can skip preheating altogether. If youre starting food in a cold air fryer, your cook time might be three or four minutes longerno big whoop! Try it both ways, and see what gives you the best result. It might depend on the recipe.

What’s The Big Deal With Air Fryers
First off, a disappointment: Air fryers are not deep fryers.
Air fryers are full of hot air, and thats what is great about them. They are basically small, powerful ovens, and ovens use air as a vehicle for heat, whereas deep frying uses fat as the vehicle for heat.
Because air fryers are ovens and not fryers, foods that come out of your air fryer will not be 100% identical to the onion rings at Cone-n-Shake or the calamari rings at your favorite bar and grill.
The upshot is that air fryers are much less messy and oil-intensive than deep-frying. Even better, these lil ovens can do much more than crank out faux fried food. Air fryers bring beautifully browned vegetables, crackly-skinned chicken wings, and even light and airy cakes, all within your reach.
Air Fryer Pumpkin Seeds
You can have crispy, salty pumpkin seeds ready in just 30 minutes thanks to the air fryer. They are delicious plain, but also great with your favorite seasonings. Toss the seeds with a generous coating of ranch seasoning, chili powder or sumac, for instance, just before air frying them.

Air Fryer Fried Chicken
Making fried chicken in an air fryer is a revelation. You can achieve a crispy crust and juicy interior without all the steps of deep-frying. A soak in seasoned buttermilk adds extra flavoras little as 1 hour will make a difference, but overnight is even better. Because of the capacity of a standard air fryer, we cook the chicken in batches. You can rewarm the first batch in a 250-degree oven for 10 minutes if you’d like to serve it all hot at once.

4. Press 2, then repeat steps 2 and 3.
5. Press Start/Pause.

Shopping For An Air Fryer This Is The Best One To Buy
There are many air fryer options out there, but this one is my favorite.
My search for the perfect air fryer has come to an end.
Making a decision on what type of air fryer you should buy can be challenging with so many options to choose from. But I can help you decide thanks to my long and, at times, bumpy history with them. I love the idea of a kitchen appliance that circulates hot air to cook food nice and crisp in a matter of minutes without the oil needed for deep frying. But I had one problem. While most of the countertop appliances work the same, every air fryer I bought somehow managed to let me down, except for one: the Ninja Foodi 8-quart, 4-in-1 Dual Zone Air Fryer. And it’s worth every penny.
My fiancé and I started out with a $50 Dash Compact Air Fryer that was perfect for small spaces, but it didn’t hold enough food to have leftovers. I used a Bella air fryer next, and it didn’t have the settings we needed for our cooking preferences. We later upgraded to a Chefman air fryer that’s no longer available. Despite cleaning it the right way, the grill plate clips came off and the finish started to peel. We knew it was time for an upgrade that would last.
Match Cook Gives You More Space
You’ve probably heard about the deliciousness of air fryer chicken wings. They’re the perfect wing that’s crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The only problem is that wings can take up a good amount of space in your air fryer. The best solution I found was using my Ninja Foodie’s Match Cook setting as a way to spread out my food in the baskets for even cooking without cramming. Here’s how it works:
1. To start, press Match Cook. Both numbers 1 and 2 will light up.
2. Choose your cooking preference, Air fry, Roast, Reheat or Dehydrate.
3. Select the time and temperature.
4. Press Start/Pause.
If you’re ever curious about what settings to use when cooking, Ninja includes two stickers on the air fryer to give you recommended times and temperatures for poultry and vegetables when using Smart Finish and Match Cook. These air fryer recipes can help, too.

What Should I Look For In An Air Fryer
Unlike pressure cookers, a single brand like Instant Pot doesnt dominate air fryer sales. There are a few features and factors you should keep in mind if youre in the market for the best air fryer for you.
- Loading. Some styles have front drawers for loading and unloading the food, while others have a flip-top lid. Our experts prefer the drawer-style models for convenience and safety.
- Ease of use. Are the controls simple to understand and operate? You might want everyone in your household to be able to use the air fryer. A handful of people read the product manual everybody else want to walk up and wing it, McManus points out. It should also be easy to detach and clean the basket.
- Controls. Most models can set temperatures up to 400 degrees, but some have just one temperature setting. A lot of people like to have a reheat button for leftovers, as well as presets for foods like fish and chicken.
- Functionality can make a difference. Can you pause cooking to flip or stir your food? With some models you have to reset the time and temperature.
- Size. Most countertop models are big enough for one or two people. If youre cooking for more, youll probably need to prepare more than one batch or buy a larger model, which can take up a lot of counter space. Some models combine a toaster oven and an air fryer, so you can save some space if you replace your toaster oven.
Solo Air Fryer: Best For Most People
The most basic of air fryers looks like a small robot. They are generally just a cylindrical base with a basket to hold the food that pulls in and out. These come as small as two quarts and can be as big as six or seven. These models come with digital controls or manual dials. There are also air fryers with dual compartments so you can make two types of food at different temps simultaneously. Ninja makes a particularly good one with two 4-quart cooking baskets .
Solo air fryers are the least expensive too, and they can be had for as little as $30. I’d say if you just want to try air frying but don’t want to commit a lot of money or kitchen space, opt for one of these.
Ninja’a basic air fryer oven is one the best we’ve tested.
