Tip For Keeping Cottage Fries From Sticking In Air Fryer

Air Fryer Sliced Potatoes

What I like to do is take some olive oil spray and just lightly spray the Air Fryer before I put potatoes down.

Then in between flipping, I spray it so that the basket gets nice and coated and wont cause the potatoes to stick and then get torn up during the cooking process.

It works great and offers a hint of that oily taste and texture to the potatoes. Season with salt and pepper when they are done cooking and they are still hot.

I have used my Air fryer so much it has become an asset in my kitchen. I love to toss in store-bought items like mozzarella sticks, chicken tenders, and more.

But, the part I love the most is I can make homemade items like baked avocado eggs for breakfast, or my famous lemon air fryer pound cake that everyone loves.

Cottage fries make an amazing potato side dish and are a great alternative to french fries or even baked potatoes. Did you know that people also call them home fries?

You can make desserts, main dishes, sides, and more in your Air Fryer. I use it almost equal to my Instant Pot!

You can cook just about anything in the air fryer in under fifteen minutes. And cottage fries are one of those things. If you didnt know, potatoes cut into thick discs are often referred to as cottage fries.

Cottage fries are one of the easiest types of fries to make because theyre so quick to cut. You dont need any special tools, just a sharp knife and a few seconds to cut slices.

You can use a mandolin to make perfect slices from any sized potato in just a few minutes, but I usually just cut them free-hand with a knife. You want to make the slices about 1/4 thick. Any thinner and theyll turn into potato chips. You can also make potato wedges in the air fryer.

You want there to be some potato in the middle, which will become silky soft as it cooks.

I always leave the skin on the potatoes, but you can remove it if you like. It wont change the cooking time or preparation at all.

What Kind Of Air Fryer Should You Use

There are so many options out there and you do not need a pricey air fryer to achieve crispy potato perfection. I use a Bosh Compact Air Fryer and it was under $40. I found it at Sams Club and the price tag appealed to me because at the time I wasnt sure how often Id use it! Needless to say, we use it all the time! You can find mine on Amazon in a variety of colors. You can absolutely splurge on a fancy air fryer if you want but just know that you can achieve great results with an inexpensive one as well!

What Kind Of Oil To Use

I used a combination of expeller pressed canola and coconut oil, which I typically use for skillet cooking and roasting veggies. Any kind of vegetable oil would work.

Keep in mind that if you use olive oil the potatoes will brown more quickly without necessarily being cooked all the way through. I did not enjoy that.

You only need about a tablespoon or so of oil, tossed to coat, in order to help crisp up the potatoes.

To Soak Or Not To Soak

Air Fryer Potatoes | How to Air Fry Potatoes

Soaking potatoes before roasting or air frying is a great idea in theory. This removes some of the starch from potatoes and yields the most incredible texture.

If you have time, I highly recommend soaking your potatoes in water for up to 1 hour.

I find when Im throwing together an air fryer dinner, I do not always have an hour to soak the potatoes. These are still delicious without the pre-soak.

In conclusion, soak the potatoes if you have time. Then pat dry and begin recipe. If you do not have time, check to make sure they are fork tender and soft on the inside.

How To Air Fry Potatoes

Wash the potatoes, pat them dry with a kitchen towel, and dice them into cubes. You can peel the potatoes if you prefer.

Add the potatoes into a bowl, add paprika, parsley, rosemary, garlic, pepper, salt, and olive oil. Mix so the potatoes are evenly coated with the seasoning.

Spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray to prevent the potato from sticking to the basket.

Spread the seasoned cubed potatoes in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Don’t overcrowd the basket.

Air fry the potatoes at a temperature of 180C/360F for 10 minutes. Bring out the basket and shake .

Return basket to the AF and cook for another 10-15 minutes or until crispy, golden brown, and the inside tender.

When they are cooked and crispy, bring them out and serve with sides of choice.

Which Potatoes Are Best For The Air Fryer

Similar to these Roasted Potatoes and Slow Cooker Potato recipes, the potatoes you use in the air fryer matters. Heres what it boils down to:

  • Russets: These will air fry beautifully. They will crisp up wonderfully with a pale golden color. Their insides will be soft and fluffy with a mild flavor. Always a good choice!
  • Yukon Golds or Yellow Potatoes: These are a favorite for air frying because they will crisp up perfectly but also turn a bit deeper golden color because of the lower starch and higher sugar content. Their crisp will be a tad softer than a russets however, their insides will be creamy and full of flavor.
  • Reds: Red potatoes when roasted will turn an even darker golden brown because of their even higher sugar and lower starch content. They will be crispy coming out but soften quickly on the outside. Their insides will be creamy and soft.
  • Baby Potatoes or New Potatoes: These are not a variety or type of potato. They are regular potatoes that have been thinned from the crop early. These potatoes have a high sugar content and roast in the air fryer perfectly as well as hold their shape. Although they can be hard to find in the grocery store as they are somewhat seasonal they are usually a favorite.

Can I Use Diced Red Potatoes Instead Of Russet Potatoes

Air Fryer Fried Potatoes (Naturally Gluten

Yes! In fact, we love this diced potato recipe using red potatoes instead. They turn out a little juicier with a different level of crispy on the outside. Be careful when you are cleaning the red potatoes to not remove all the skin while scrubbing! That red skin helps keep the outside crispy in the air fryer and lends flavor and nutrition.

We need to try a diced red potatoes in the air fryer vs. russet cubed potatoes taste test some day!

How To Make Air Fryer Fried Potatoes:

Take a russet potato and wash and dry it. Cut it into 1/4-inch slices.

Spray the basket of your air fryer with a little bit of avocado or olive oil.

Place the potato slices in the air fryer basket and spread them out. Spritz just a little oil on the potatoes and sprinkle with salt and pepper.

Cook at 400° for 5 minutes. Lightly spritz the potatoes again and then turn them over. Spritz again with oil and cook for another 5 minutes. Remove any that look done and cook for another 2 minutes.

*If you want to add in some sliced onions add them when you turn the potatoes over.

And that is it! So easy and tasty.

**If you double or triple your recipe you may need to add an extra minute or two to the cooking time if your potatoes get a little crowded.

Air Fryer Oven Vs Air Fryer

Cooking with a traditional air fryer is slightly differently than an Air Fryer Oven.

Air Fryer Ovens are the the extra large models that allow much more space for cooking. This is great if you are preparing food for 4+ people. These ovens can also offer additional cooking methods such as broiling, toasting, baking and even dehydrating. With the extra space and functions comes some cons. The food does not get quite as crisp on the outside. The cook time typically takes a few minutes longer as well. Air fryer ovens also cost double or more than regular air fryers.

Air Fryers on the other hand tend to be smaller. I recommend buying a 5 quart or larger air fryer unless you are only preparing food for yourself. Traditional air fryers take less time to cook the food and achieve an amazing crispiness. The cons being the limited space and I find them to be aggravating to clean.

Both are great depending on your needs and priorities.

Tips For Using An Air Fryer:

How To Cook Air Fryer Potatoes And Onions – Air Fried Potatoes And Onions
  • My number one tip for using the air fryer would be to not overcrowd the food in the air fryer basket. The food will cook faster and more evenly when theres room for the heat to circulate.
  • Use an oil sprayer to lightly coat your food with an oil that has a high smoke point like avocado or olive oil. You may need to mist your food a couple of times throughout the cooking process, especially areas that may look dry.
  • Lightly pepper your food on top once you put it in the air fryer. When it comes time to turn your food halfway through cooking youll be able to easily tell which pieces have been turned.

How To Make Crispy Air Fryer Potatoes

First, clean the potatoes. Slice them thinly using a knife or vegetable slicer.

The next step is very important. In a bowl add cool water and place the sliced potatoes into it. Let them sit in the water for 30 minutes.

Why do you want to soak potato slices in water before frying them? This gets the potato starch from the potatoes and keeps them from getting soggy and sticking together. You want maximum crispiness so make sure to do this step.

After the potatoes have been soaked, drain the water, then using a paper towel dry off the potatoes.

To the uncooked potatoes, add olive oil and seasonings. Stir to coat the potatoes evenly.

Place the potatoes into the basket of the air fryer. Set the air fryer to 380 degrees and set for 25 minutes. Push start.

Check the potatoes after 10 minutes and using a small set of tongs, flip the potatoes around. Slide the basket back in then perform the same action every 5 minutes for another 15 minutes.

Air Fryer Fried Potatoes And Onions

More time in the kitchen brings about more food experiments! My new kitchen also brought more storage space allowing me to invest in some of the new popular kitchen gadgets, starting with an air fryer. Prior to the air fryer I really was not frying food on the regular. The mess, the popping grease and that smell! Youd smell it for days. An air fryer eliminated those issues so I racked my brain trying to think of what I would make and instantly remembered my mamas fried potatoes! As a child this was one of her go to sides made with red potatoes and yellow onions on the stove top. I took her recipe up a notch and created the Air Fryer Fried Potatoes and Onions.
