With a stainless-steel trim wrapped around a high-gloss black body, the Vortex Plus has a characteristic air fryer design. A deep drawer with a chunky vertical handle forms the bottom of the appliance, while a sloping touchscreen sits on top, complete with a silver control dial for scrolling.
If youre not familiar with conventional air fryers, it can initially feel strange to cook in a pull-out compartment. You cant quite shake the feeling you are putting your frozen chips in a high-tech sock drawer, but the benefit of the set-up is an appliance that is child-proof, reduces cooking odours, and just makes cooking a meal tidier somehow.
Inside the box, you get the 5.7 litre/6 QT air fryer, an internal tray for the drawer, a manual, and the safety and warranty leaflet. This is not an appliance with accessories you need to store.
While its a decent size at 32.5cm x 29cm x 30cm with an extra 8cm/3.1in for the handle, its not an overwhelming appliance on your countertop, possibly because the slanted touchscreen mitigates against the sense of a monolithic black box.
And at 5.95kg , its not a heavy appliance, but its designed to have a permanent countertop presence.
Cleaning The Air Fryer
Always wrap the drip tray in aluminium foil simply to save you time and potential frustration. You can simply throw the greasy foil away.
The trays are dishwasher safe and are really easy to wash by hand due to the nonstick coating. Theres a lot of parts to clean depending on what you decide to make. Be careful when cleaning the rotating basket by hand. Invest in using a brush instead of a sponge and watch out for your knuckles from scraping against the metal graded sides.
Now, the hard part: the door and its hinge. Crumbs and flour easily get stuck in the door hinge no matter how careful you try to cover or protect this area. It makes sense that they designed the door with that in mind so you can take the door off to wipe down. This takes a bit of fearless practice to get the hang of it. Naturally, your first instinct is to not want to break your new gadget toy over bread crumbs. There are Youtube videos to show you how to do take the door off.
Recipes Made For You Instant Vortex Plus
This air fryer is still new to the market, so you might have some limited resources at first. However, as bloggers continue to develop and perfect recipes, you will definitely see more coming through the pipeline in the future.
In the meantime, you can use almost any air fryer recipe with some adjustments on how the food sits. Try using recipes that resemble the same mini-oven shape as the Vortex. At first, it might be a trial and error process until youve honed your own Vortex skills.
Remember, you cant make anything with a liquid batter unless you freeze it first and you also cant make anything in large quantities.

Setup Process: Took A Little Trial And Error
The Instant Vortex is basically ready to go right out of the box. If youre going to use the Air Fry or Bake settings first, all you have to do is remove the plastic and styrofoam packaging, insert the cooking trays and the drip pan, and then complete a test run which simply involves running the machine for 20 minutes. Once thats done, youre ready to cook.
If you want to start with the Rotisserie setting, however, things are a little more complicated. Though the Vortex comes with two user manuals, we couldnt find clear instructions on how to insert the rotisserie basket or spit. After a bit of trial and errorabout 10 minutes of fumbling with the accessorieswe figured it out, but it would have been helpful to have step-by-step instructions.
As avid Instant Pot users, our expectations for the Instant Vortex Plus were admittedly high luckily, it didnt just live up to our expectationsit exceeded them.
After struggling with the setup process, we decided to Google more thorough instructions which led us to an additional manual on Instant Brands website. This proved to be exactly what we were missing as it detailedwith pictureshow to properly set up the Vortex for each cooking mode. While we were happy we found it after the fact, we wish the full manual had just been included in the box.
What About The Vortex Plus
While its very similar to the 4-in-1 air fryer, the standout feature in the Vortex Plus is the dehydrator. If youre looking for a reliable air fryer that can also produce perfectly dried fruits and veggies, the Vortex Plus is for you. Just like the 4-in-1, the Vortex Plus has a roomy, 6-quart basket with a nonstick coating for easy cleanup. Equipped with pre-programmed settings and a temperature-controlling dial, the interface is also super user-friendly. The only downside to this model is the broiler function, which is pre-set to 400 degrees F and for two minutes and didnt perform well for us in testing.

How Easy Is It To Clean
I have tested several air fryers, but this is the first one of an oven style that features a rotisserie, rotisserie basket, and three separate trays. With that said, there are some parts of this model that are easier than others to clean. The cooking trays and drip pan all boast non-stick surfaces and are technically dishwasher safe. These pans actually cleaned up quite easily. I would recommend lining the drip pan with aluminum foil as recommended in the manual, to make clean-up even easier, but overall, a bit of hot soapy water and a non-abrasive cloth had them clean in no time, at all.
The rotisserie spit and forks, as well as the rotisserie basket, are all a bit trickier to clean, but even after roasting a chicken on the spit, I managed to restore them to their original shine. A 10-minute soak in hot water with dish soap really loosened up most of the browned bits that had stuck to the spit and forks. I felt comfortable scrubbing them as they do not have a non-stick coating. In the end, they looked as good as new.
The oven door of this air fryer is actually removable which is a nice feature. By opening the door to a 45-degree angle, you can rather easily disengage the hinge. This enables you to clean out any drips or crumbs that may have accumulated. I would not recommend submerging this door in water, however, as water can collect inside the window making it steamy and cloudy.

Instant Vortex Plus Vs Instant Omni Plus
My next contender is the Instant Omni Plus. It is a digital convection oven model that offers combination air fryer and toaster oven capabilities. I selected this particular model based on design. It is somewhat similar to the Vortex with its front-opening oven door, but the Omni also offers toaster oven capabilities. I found this intriguing and it seemed to satisfy my desire for a lower heat source that the Vortex lacks. The Omni can do things like make toast and cook a frozen pizza complete with a crisp bottom crust which was something the Vortex failed at.
Another difference between these machines is the temperature range. The Omni offers a much wider range, from 70-450 degrees, making it a strong contender for the cook who also wishes to get into some dehydrating. Add to this the timer that allows you to use it continually for 72 hours which is really amazing for things like beef jerky which require a low temperature over a long period of time something the Vortex could not handle with its limited 60-minute timer.
Both models include a rotisserie which is only an asset if you plan to cook a whole chicken or larger cuts of meat. I did note that the rotisserie forks on the Omni are a bit improved with a thumb screw that makes it easier to tighten. Otherwise, these machines are quite similarly matched as far as the rotisserie goes.
How Well Does The Instant Vortex Air Fryer Work
Our engineers scrutinized the Instant Vortex in the lab, and we also tried it at home. Heres what we found:
During an at-home evaluation, it became clear that the Instant Vortexs unique square footprint is the secret to its success. It capably cranks out multiple servings in one cycle easily making enough appetizers for a game-day gathering or a small dinner party. Its really that spacious.
Like most air fryers, it excels at delivering crispy food in a fraction of the time. But weve experimented with at least half a dozen air fryers at home and can attest to the fact that its the most ideal for baking dishes like macaroni, brownies, and cupcakes because square baking dishes fit easily inside, and it is intuitively easier to use. Small but thoughtful design features dramatically simplify the cooking process.
But, oh, the noise! The Instant Vortex sounds like three microwaves running all at once, as opposed to the more subtle fridgelike hum of other air fryers weve tried.
Its also not the easiest air fryer to clean. The crisper tray that comes with the unit, though dishwasher-safe, has an abundance of small airflow openings. Its great for getting a nice crunch sure. But when you have to use a skewer to get food debris unstuck, it quickly becomes a nuisance . Finally, the basket cant go in the dishwasher. But to be fair, wiping it clean with a hot, soapy rag isnt a big deal.
