Congratulations! You must be the owner of a new air fryer, or the soon-to-be owner of an air fryer. Everybodys talking about these things, and now you get to see what the big deal is for yourself.

How do they work? Is it really frying? What kinds of foods can you make in your new air fryer? Here’s everything you need to know about a basic basket-type air fryer.

Which Size Air Fryer Should I Buy

Logically, the larger the air fryers capacity is in quarts, the larger it will be. If you dont have a lot of cooking space, it may be difficult to store large appliances like an air fryer.

If counter space is limited, choose a smaller model with a capacity of 2 to 3 quarts. The most common size is the 4-quart model which is slightly larger than an ordinary 4-slice toaster.

Obviously, if you want to keep your air fryer out on the countertop all of the time, where its easily accessed and visible for everyone in your household or family to see, then that medium will work too.

Bring it out whenever you plan on using it and then store it away in a cupboard or drawer when finished.

In order to know which size of air fryer youll need, measure the width and depth of where you want to place it at home.

Again, there are a number of handy quick air fryer charts online that compare a variety of popular air fryers that range from 2 to 16-quart capacity with their counter space dimensions.

Which Air Fryer Should You Buy How To Pick Your Perfect Size And Type

Air fryers aren’t so basic anymore. New models offer lots of features. So how do you choose which air fryer is right for you?

Air fryers have been around for a few years now, so everyone is generally accustomed to what these convection oven-like appliances look like and all the tasks they are capable of completing. But suddenly, all kinds of new air fryer options have popped up!

Now, there are whole new categories of air fryers. While the original form remains available, there are air fryer toaster ovens, air fryer Instant Pots, and even dual-drawer air fryers. So the question becomes: Which air fryer is right for you?

Ultimately, the type of air fryer you need is all about what you are going to do with it. Some people with limited kitchen space may be using their air fryer as a replacement oven. It may be their only appliance, so they want it to do a lot.

For others, crisping up fries or chicken wings is the extent of their air fryer need. They have specific recipes in mind, and beyond that, they have other appliances they can use. Con: They Have Limitations

Convenient though they are, air fryers are not set-and-forget appliances. Fiona says you still need to be around to give the chips a shake and turn your chicken wings during cooking or you’ll find them deliciously golden on one side and pale on the other.

The air fryer is unable to crisp and brown on the base of solid foods, so if your model doesn’t let out a beep to remind you to attend to your meal, you’ll need to set a timer.

What Cant You Cook In An Air Fryer

You wont be able to fry items in a wet, homemade batter, although if you adjust your recipe, you can fry items in a homemade breadcrumb mix. Cheesy items should also be avoided. Batter and cheese will just melt into a gloopy mess under the tray in your air fryer.

Broccoli and similar vegetables will either dry out or wind up soggy. Leafy veg will be blown around and will not cook evenly.

Dry food coated in seasoning will end up losing its seasoning as it cooks.

And if you like a rare burger or steak, forget it. By the time the outside has browned, the inside of the meat will be well done.

That being said, there are recipes for all kinds of air-fried foods, including some of the above, so technique is important and you may just have to experiment to see what works for you.

Additional features that come with some air fryers are a stirring paddle, which turns your food and ensures that food is cooked evenly. Another feature is an app, where you can choose the recipe using the app which then sets the fryer to cook at the required temperature and time. You can also keep an eye on the remaining cooking time using the app and it will alert you when its ready. The Tefal Actifry 2in1 comes with an extra layer which allows you to cook a full meal without mixing the two together, for example, steak and chips or the Philips air fryer comes with a basket divider. Air Fryer Blackened Chicken Tenders

These air fryer blackened chicken tenders are so tasty, and have just a little kick of heat in every bite. They are the perfect healthy meal, and best of all, they are delicious!

I first tried making these chicken tenders, when my daughter and I were trying new ways to spice up meals. We wanted to skip the breaded chicken, and had to find a way to make naked tenders.

She likes to make recipes that are Weight Watchers friendly, and I like to count macros. These tenders definitely do both!

What Type Of Pork Chop Will You Buy

When shopping for pork chops, it helps to know which varieties are available so you can make an informed decision. This recipe calls for ribbed pork chops, which I like. A rib-cut steak is what youll find here. Bone-in pork chops are a variation of boneless chops. These are my favourite chops. You may also get loin chops with a bone in them, if youd want to do so. There will be a lot of bone, fat, and connective tissue in them because they were cut from the back and hip.

You Have To Flip Most Foods Halfway Through The Cooking Time For An Even Cook

In my air fryer, it’s difficult to get an even cooking texture. Most times, the top of the food becomes crispy and delicious, while the bottom remains soggy. For example, when I made breaded chicken cutlets, one side of them was crunchy, while the other looked mushy.

I learned quite quickly that I had to flip the food halfway through to get the underside crispy as well. It’s not something I was used to doing with a regular oven.

Burnt Dried And Failed Air Fryer Dishes

What Size Air Fryer Do I Need?

Air frying your food is trial and error. Especially in the beginning. One of the most asked questions I receive is how to use an air fryer for the first time and how to make crispy french fries. On the internet and in air fryer recipe books you can find a lot of information about how to set your air fryer for a particular dish or recipe. But there are a lot of air fryers from different manufacturers, this means that every air fryers prepares food a bit differently compared to the other.

So, it might happen that your dish gets burned, gets dried out or just fails. I also experience this when trying out things in my air fryer. I am always experimenting with my air fryer. I am just curious to know what happens inside the air fryer when frying different types of vegetables, fruits and meat for instance.

Once I tried to dry fruits, such as slices of banana, mango and strawberries. The first time I tried it, I used my Philips Airfryer XXL and the standard frying basket with the mesh bottom. Well, the strawberries became very soft and got stuck between the mesh bottom of the basket.

TIP:

Last example was that I wanted to grill some mozzarella slices. So I put the slices inside the air fryer, turned it on and came back a few minutes later. I was expecting grilled cheese slices, but in reality I made a grilled cheese frying basket. All the cheese got stuck between the meshed pattern of the frying basket and this was a daunted task to clean afterwards.

How Do Air Fryers Work

An air fryer cooks food with hot air instead of oil, essentially replacing the conventional deep oil fryer and ovens with a healthy alternative. Air frying is a cooking method that uses convection to cook foods as air moves the heat inside the cooker.

An air fryer combines several different cooking methods in one convenient appliance.

  • An electric coil placed above the food provides radiant heating, much like a broiler element or stove top burner. This dry heat penetrates the food and warms it internally.
  • A fan positioned above the coil creates a current of super-heated air that flows around and under the food. This is convection heating, a cooking method often found in commercial ovens.
  • The convection action converts the small amount of oil you use into a fine mist that coats the food as it circulates. This action mimics the effect traditional deep frying has on foods submerged in hot cooking oil.
  • As the hot air flows, the foods own moisture creates the steam needed to finish the cooking process.

How Would You Know If The Pork Chop Is Thoroughly Cooked

  • If your pork chops reach 145 degrees after you insert an Instant Read meat thermometer into them, theyre done.
  • Check the thickest section of the pork chop for doneness, and do this for each chop you cook.
  • In the same way that other meats can be undercooked, pork chops can also be undercooked. With a three-year-old in the house, I took meat temperatures extremely seriously.
  • There is no reason to infect others with salmonella because you couldnt wait an additional five minutes.
  • Once theyre done cooking, remove the pork chops from the oven as soon as possible. So, you should strive for at least 145 in the exam.
  • It is easy to overcook air-fried pork chops since they continue to cook outside of the appliance.
  • Overcooking is the only way to make flavours taste harsh and dry.

When To Preheat Your Air Fryer :

Bad times to preheat:

  • Thick Raw Foods. Cooking very thick or thick/frozen meats like roasts, big chicken breasts or anything raw that needs to be cooked though the center doesnt need preheating. If youre preheating, youll be cooking the outside way too quick and too crisp before it cooks all the way to the center. This is bad when youre cooking raw, thick or frozen raw foods. The meat, roast or frozen center will still be raw in the center. Think about it. Too hot, too quick means raw food wont cook all the way through. The exception is in the case of steaks that you want to be rare or medium rare.
  • Delicate foods that you dont want crispy. Preheating will only make foods cook hotter and crisper on the outside. In cases when youre cooking delicate or small cut vegetables, they might burn on the outside before the inside is tender. And in many cases, cooking too hot when pre-heating dries out the food. So if you do pre-heat, just reduce cooking time a bit.
  • Pastries, breads, cakes or similar products. When air frying quick breads or small cakes, you want to start in a cold air fryer so it can slowly heat or cook the bread/pastry. Preheating will cook the outside too crispy and the inside will be doughy and raw. The crust will be hard, while the interior dough will be raw. If you make smaller bite sized pastries or cakes, then the inside can cook quicker and not burn on the outside when the air fryer is pre-heated.
  • Best times to pre heat:

Should You Get an Air Fryer?

An air fryer heats much faster than an oven. When developing recipes for our air fryer cookbook, Air Fryer Perfection, we found that the total time it took to cook food started in a cold air fryer was the same as when we waited a few minutes for the air fryer to heat and then added our food plus, skipping the preheating was convenient. Thats one of the advantages to using an air fryer as opposed to an ovenits much faster because you dont have to preheat it.

What Is The Best Air Fryer To Buy

We put five machines through their paces, and two came out on top. Both Gourmia and Philips brands cooked golden fries and a pound of cornmeal-crusted chicken drumsticks to our ideal level of crispness. They cooked these foods as well as a standard oven, but in half the overall time. Plus, both brands surprised us by cooking an 8-ounce salmon fillet perfectly.

Pro: They’re Easy To Use And Safe

Fiona cites ease of use and safety as two of the top-three advantages of an air fryer. You need only select the temperature and cooking time, or choose from the pre-programmed settings, and you’re away. “They’re great for teenagers looking to make themselves an afternoon snack, whom you trust with an appliance,” she says.

There Are So Many Different Types To Choose From

The top air fryers Ive tested come in a range of designs and sizes. My absolute favorite is the Ninja Foodi Dual Zone, because you can cook two elements of a meal simultaneously, in different drawers and even in different modes. Some air fryers are more like miniature ovens, such as the Tower air fryer Ive tested that not only had multiple layers for cooking different elements of a meal at once, but also had an attachment to rotisserie a whole chicken. Truly, delicious.

Important Tips To Keep In Mind When You Use An Air Fryer

How Big of an Air Fryer Do I Need for Home Use?
    • Always have the grate in the basket. This allows hot air to circulate around the food, and also keeps the food from sitting in excess oil.
    • Air fryers are loud. When its running, youll hear whirring fans.
    • Its hands-on. Even browning requires you to remove the basket and shuffle the food around every few minutes.
    • It’s fine to pull out the basket for a peek. You can do this at any point into the cooking process. No need to shut off the machine, as it shuts itself off when the basket is out.
    • Accordingly, make sure the drawer is pushed all the way in, or it wont turn back on. Youll know, because the air fryer will be suddenly quiet.
    • Food cooks fast, faster than youre used to! Its one of the best attributes of the air fryer. Your air fryers manual likely has a handy table of cooking times and temperatures for common foods. The less food in the basket, the shorter the cook time will be the more food, the longer it will be.
    • You may need a slightly lower temperature. A lot of air fryer recipes call for lower temperature settings than their conventional counterparts. This might seem fishy, but just go with it. Once again, air fryers get hot very fast and move that hot air around, so a slightly lower temperature will help keep food from getting too dark or crispy on the outside, while still being properly cooked on the inside.
