Budget Pick: Cosori Pro Air Fryer

May be out of stock

The Cosori Pro Air Fryer was the best pod-shaped model we tested for under $100. Although the Cosoris 3.7-quart capacity is slightly larger than that of the Philips Premium Airfryer HD9741/96, it doesnt cook as evenly, but considering its relatively low price, we think its results were good enough. The Cosoris many preprogrammed settings werent as accurate as those of the Philips, eitherwe preferred using the manual controls for selecting the time and temperature instead. Like the Philips, the Cosori has a square-shaped basket that fits more food than the round baskets in other models. The Cosori also comes with a recipe booklet, which is helpful if youre new to cooking with convection technology.

Like the Philips, the Cosori has a removable basket to hold your food while it cooks. We prefer this design to the removable trays of a lot of newer models, because trays tend to fall out when you flip the bucket upside down to transfer food to a platethis was the case with the Ninja AF101 Air Fryer we testedand when the tray comes flying out, it could potentially cause burns. We also like that the Cosori has a plastic guard that covers the baskets release button , which prevents you from inadvertently pressing it while shaking your food. Without the guard, its easier to accidentally press the button, which would release the bucket and send it crashing onto the floor.

Best Overall: Ninja Air Fryer

When we tested air fryers the first time, the Ninja proved itself the best model for chicken wings. That’s still the case, but we found this machine also cooked many other things well in this latest round of air fryer testing, landing in the top spot on our updated list. The Ninja was the most powerful air fryer we tested, blasting chicken wings to crispy goodness the fastest. Speed is a big draw since it means you’ll get that desired crispy outer layer faster with less risk of drying out the inside of a chicken wing, French fry or whatever else you’re making.

The Ninja also made frozen mozzarella sticks that were nicely browned with bubbly cheese inside. They started out frozen and were transformed into crispy, crunchy and gooey cheese bombs in 6 minutes flat. If you’re into fries, the Ninja won’t disappoint either. Frozen French fries turned out golden brown and delicious in just 10 minutes in both rounds of testing.

One thing to note is the Ninja lacks a special cooking method or mode for vegetables so, much like in our previous testing, the fresh Brussell sprouts emerged a tad overdone, even burnt in spots. This is not a terribly complicated fix and simply requires a little bit more checking when you are air frying certain foods for the first time.

Why Pick A Pod Style Air Fryer

Most pod-style air fryers are best suited to under counter storage. While they are incredibly useful appliances, they are often a bit bulky and when counter space is at a premium, they can take up a fair amount of room. On the other hand, you might find yourself using it so frequently it might be easier to just leave it on the countertop.

Pod style air fryers are best suited to cooking traditionally fried foods, like wings, fries, mozzarella sticks, etc. Because of the bucket/basket-style design of these machines, they don’t often handle things like bacon, steaks, or whole chickens as well as the other air fryer types . Not to say you couldn’t put an entire chicken in a pod style air fryer, it just might not work out exactly to plan.

On top of normal foods you’d put in a deep fat fryer, things like Brussels, carrots, sweet potatoes, and other veggies will work perfectly in your pod-style air fryer. I like to toss asparagus in a little oil and a touch of corn starch and rice flour before air frying for a crispy, crunchy, dippable asparagus snack.

Why Air Fryers Are Terrible

Dont Waste Money On The 11 Best Air Fryers

We believe you should buy quality goods that will last. We believe in getting the best, not for status, but so our stuff survives the trials of time without breaking down, cracking up, or giving out when we need them most. Celebrating excellence is our goal, and air fryers simply dont meet it.

Air fryers cost too much, they dont actually fry anything, so the food is being cooked via a heating element and a fan, which is a less efficient method than traditional ovens.

You dont get the extra fatty flavor from deep fat frying, nor the crispy, crunchy texture that youll find with food cooked in oil, baked, or pan-seared. What an air fryer offers is food burnt on top and still frozen or gooey on the bottom. Even the best arent good, theyre only less inferior than the other choices.

Are There Alternatives Worth Considering

Air fryers are a unique way to fry your favorite foods such as chicken wings, french fries and more. You’ll use up to 95% less oil, making french fries finally healthy. We didn’t find any good alternatives to air frying.

However, if you’re not ready to invest in an air fryer, you could use your oven set to broil mode or a high heat setting to get a similar effect.

What Can You Make In An Air Fryer

The options for foods you can cook in an air fryer are vast but some air fryer favorites include chicken wings, chicken tenders, french fries and mozzarella sticks. You can also make fish in an air fryer, including salmon, for a moist inside and roasted outer crust. Bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs are great when made in an air fryer, as are certain vegetables like Brussels sprouts, mushrooms, onions, peppers and carrots. Frozen foods such as dumplings, potato skins, Hot Pockets and tater tots can be made in an air fryer for a quick and easy snack or side dish. Air fryers can also quickly reheat food like last night’s pizza or leftover fried chicken. Air fryers reheat food almost as quickly as a microwave and the results are generally much better.

Air Fryers Can Be Loud And Noisy

Air fryers use a ventilator to suck in air which circulates inside the pan of the air fryer when it leaves the air fryer though the rear exhaust. This makes quite some noise, and the amount of noise an air fryer makes differs between the models. But I can say that you can definitely can hear an air fryer when it is turned on.

You can compare the sound of a turned on air fryer with the sound of a hair dryer, a vacuum cleaner or an extractor hood. I dont find the sound an air fryer makes very annoying, but it is something to be aware of. Especially when you want to use your air fryer in an open kitchen or when you want to talk with someone in the same area where your air fryer is located.

When you do find the produced noise a bit annoying, you can always place your air fryer in a closed off area. Such as your garage or scullery when you have one in your home.

Some digital air fryer also make loud beeping noises. I have a few air fryers that produce very loud beeping sound when you adjust the timer, temperature or other settings. This noise is also produced when the air fryer has reached the desired temperature, or when the timer is finished.

Is An Air Fryer Healthier Than Deep Frying

Top 5 Best Large Air Fryer for Family Cooking 2021-2022

An air fryer can be a healthy option for deep frying simply because of the reduced use of oil. Air fryers typically eliminate most of the oil you’ll need, with some air fryers claiming you need up to 95% less oil. Frying requires you to submerge your food in oil to cook fully. Air frying uses circulating hot air for the same effect.

Runner Up Overall Instant

While the Instant Pot Duo seemed to be a pressure-cooker first and an air fryer second, the Ninja Foodi 9-in-1 multi-cooker has flipped the script and made the air fryer capability the focus of this cooker.

The Ninja designers have prioritized the air fryer function and this is obvious from a design standpoint. In the Ninja Foodi, you will find that you can remove the pressure cooker lid, while the air fryer lid remains a fixed component to the unit, remaining in an up position when not in use.

I can imagine that by keeping the air fryer lid as a fixed piece of the appliance, you can avoid an external power cord, but this convenience is overshadowed by how frustrating the air fryer lid is when not in use. Because the lid remains in an upright position it can get in the way when you’re trying to adjust the pressure cooker lid, furthermore, it prevents the appliance from sitting in certain spots where overhead clearance might be at a minimum.

Overall, even though this air fryer was more consistent than the Instant Pot Duo which claimed the top place in this category, the lid was so frustrating to work around that it completely overshadowed this oven’s performance. That being said this oven can handle everything from french fries to rice or beef stew with ease, and if you can get past the design of the lid system, you’ll really enjoy this product.

The Pros And Cons Of Air Fryers

Who doesn’t love a crispy batch of french fries or chicken tenders? While most people agree that fried comfort foods can be satisfying sometimes, they’re not the healthiest option out there due to the heavy oils involved to fry the food. Luckily, these top air fryers can serve healthier versions of some of your favorite fried foods without all the fats that can affect your heart health. This guide brings you the best air fryer based on what you’re in search of.

Before diving in, it’s helpful to know how air fryers work. The best air fryer eliminates the need to submerge foods in oil. Instead, it uses hot air circulation to “fry” the food. An air fryer features a chamber that heats food from a heating element close by. While the heating element cooks the food, a fan circulates the hot air produced. All the hot, circulating air has another positive effect — foods tend to cook faster and more evenly.

Air fryers will take up counter space due to their size and design. They’re electric — you’ll need to place yours near a wall outlet. Air fryers come in a variety of design styles and sizes. Some may look more like a toaster oven, while others are shaped like a pod. Some manufacturers may even offer the small kitchen appliance in several colors to go with nearly any kitchen decor. We identified six of the best air fryers available now to help you on your path to eating healthier.

Pros And Cons Of Air Fryers

There is no doubt that air fryers serve a multitude of purposes in the kitchen, from creating an oil-less version of fried foods to steaming vegetables to baking cupcakes and brownies. But an air fryer does have its limitations and drawbacks.

Heres a look at the pros of cooking with an air fryer:

  • Pro: An air fryer produces crisp, moist food without the need for a deep fryer or large amounts of oil. If avoiding saturated fats and heavily fried foods is on your list of dietary priorities, then using an air fryer instead of a deep oil fryer is clearly the way to go.
  • Pro: Air fryers are much easier to clean and maintain than traditional deep fryers. There is no large container of hot cooking oil to filter and store. The air fryer’s cooking basket can be washed by hand or in a dishwasher between uses.

Heres a look at the cons of cooking with an air fryer:

  • Con: The constant flow of dry, superheated air around many foods can eventually strip them of moisture, especially on the surface. While some people may accept a bit of dryness as the price paid for healthier eating, others could be disappointed by the dryness and/or lack of flavor in air fried foods.
  • Con: Cooking times can be considerably longer in an air fryer than a traditional deep fryer.

Bottom Line: Are Air Fryers Worth It

The best air fryers of 2018

Now that you know the pros and cons of air fryers, its time to decide whether its an appliance you want in your kitchen.

The upsides are plenty.

An air fryer is easy to use, cooks and heats fast, and can mimic crispy food without using a deep fryer. Plus, they are easier to clean than deep fryers and safer to use.

You can reheat crispy foods quickly and make healthier meals using less oil. And since there is no need to recycle oil , you wont experience lingering odors when you cook.

Yet, there are downsides to consider.

Just because you use an air fryer, it does not mean the meal is automatically healthy. Besides this, you are limited to what you can cook. Cooking times and temperatures can vary, so youll have to endure a learning curve and might waste a lot of food before you get the hang of it.

It takes more time to clean an air fryer than cooking in an oven.

Finally, air fryers can be expensive, bulky, difficult to store, noisy, and they offer limited cooking capacity.

Bottom line air fryers have been trending for years, but they are only worth the buzz if they fit your lifestyle. If you have a large family, itll take too long to make a meal to satisfy a crowd. But for couples or people looking for ways to cook quick meals with less oil, it could be the perfect kitchen upgrade.

This factor might be the most important consideration you need to know first. The ideal capacity range for a family of 4 should be from 5 quarts to 6 quarts or more. This range can cover a big batch of food at once, so you can save more time to process.

6 to 10-quart air fryers are also perfect for parties or gatherings with more people.

Also Great: Philips Premium Airfryer Hd9741/96

*At the time of publishing, the price was $220.

The Philips Premium Airfryer HD9741/96 is the best pod-shaped air fryer weve tested. Its a far less versatile appliance than the Cuisinart convection toaster oven, but its smaller footprint may make it ideal for tiny kitchens with limited counter space. Smaller households that plan to make only one or two portions of food at a time may also prefer this model. Compared with other pod-shaped air fryers we tested, the Philips cooked food the most evenly, aside from the occasional soggy french fry on average, it cooked faster than most other models we tried and with better results. Like all pod-shaped air fryers, this Philips model isnt good for baking or making toastits fan is too powerful and produces overcooked, irregularly shaped cakes and wonky, unevenly browned toast. But if you dont plan to bake in it, we think its a suitable choice for cooking frozen snacks, smaller portions of meat and vegetables, or certain dishes you want extra crispy, like chicken wings or flautas.
