What Is A Traditional Oven

Should You Get an Air Fryer or an Air Fryer Toaster Oven? | Gear Heads

Unless you have been living under a rock, you probably already know what a traditional oven is. However, we want to detail how they work, as this will give you a clearer idea about the comparisons we make later.

To put it simply, an oven is a sealed chamber used to maintain heat for the purposes of baking or roasting.

Usually an oven will have heating elements on the top and bottom of the cooking compartment. If you want to grill, you would use only the top heating element, using both to roast or bake.

Later in the ovenâs life, they introduced the idea of a fan assisted oven or convection oven. You may be saying that these types of ovens are exactly the same as an air fryer. Well, they are, in fact, different. Fan assisted ovens usually have a much smaller and less powerful fan than an air fryer.

Air Fryer French Fries

These air fryer french fries are the reason I bought an air fryer in the first place. I used frozen french fries for this side by side comparison. I typically air fry french fries anywhere from 8-12 minutes depending on the type of fries and how thick cut they are.

Amount: .75 lbs of frozen shoestring french fries.

Preheat: Both the basket and the oven were preheated at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 5 minutes. Then each was cooked at 400 degrees Fahrenheit until desired crispiness.

  • Basket: The basket took 8 minutes to cook until desired crispiness.
  • Oven: The oven took 13 minutes to cook until the desired crispiness.
  • Winner: The basket, by a littleas it cooked a few minutes faster.

Should You Get A Digital Air Fryer Over Analog Meh Not Really

This depends on your personal preference but the controls don’t have much to do with the performance or end result. Digital air fryers have presets for things like chicken wings, french fries, fish and such, but I find that even if the presets exist, it takes me just a few runs to learn how long things need and the correct temperatures, and I end up bypassing them anyways. Digital air fryers tend to cost a bit more and you run the risk of the panel shorting out, but having a digital readout of the temp and cook time can be nice.

Ovens do have some disadvantages, including:

  • Longer cooking times: Ovens can take longer to cook food than other methods, such as stovetop cooking. It means you’ll need to plan if you’re using an oven.
  • Higher cost: Ovens can be more expensive than other kitchen appliances, such as air fryers.
  • Limited versatility: Ovens are typically only used for baking, roasting, and broiling. Meaning that they might not be suitable for everyone.

What You Need To Know About The Air Fryer

The air fryer comes in various shapes and colors however, one fundamental feature unifies each air fryer’s model and design circulation. While the name may paint a different story, the air fryer doesn’t fry your food . The air fryer combats heat alongside a fan and a well-ventilated basket. As the appliance heats up, the hot air circulates through the ventilated basket evenly giving any dish an overall, thoroughly cooked, and crispy result . The fan and heat are coming from above while the basket chamber sits below. The basket is essential in air frying. The holes and even spacing allow the air to get underneath the food, giving it thorough cooking. If the basket is lined or overcrowded, the air fryer won’t work as intended.

Another element that nutritionists and foodies like about their air fryers is the need for minimal oil if any at all while cooking. Unlike deep frying, air fryers give food a crunchy and crispy texture without heavy amounts of oil a teaspoon will work just fine.

An Air Fryer Uses Less Oil Not No Oil

There’s this debate that using the air fryer is basically oil-free cooking. This is partially true. The most common food you will probably cook in the air fryer is the food that you normally would fry, including pork chops, frozen food such as fries and nuggets, and chicken.

However, if you have ever tried to cook chicken in the air fryer without the skin on or made homemade chicken nuggets coated in panko breadcrumbs, you might be surprised about the resulting dish: it might not brown at all.

This isn’t because the air fryer isn’t getting hot. Air can get quite hot. The problem lies with the food itself. Neither lean meats nor the breadcrumbs have any natural fats which are needed to develop that beautiful golden brown color in food. Any food that has natural oils such as a pork chop or frozen French fries and nuggets which were flash-fried in oil before being frozen will benefit from being cooked in the air fryer. Without the oil to help promote browning, your food won’t brown well nor will it taste as great either.

What you can do to these fat-free ingredients is brush or spray the food with a layer of oil. Lightly brush or spray the skinless chicken with oil to get it to brown while in the air fryer.

Air Fryer Vs Convection Oven: What’s The Difference

The latest craze in meal planning, food preparation, and TikTok recipes is the famous air fryer. With complete versatility, air fryers can bake a flakey piece of salmon, or a sizzling steak, and heat up your favorite frozen fries. It appears as though the air fryer has taken a front seat in just about every heating and warming food preparation. In local supermarkets like Trader Joe’s, air frying instructions can be seen as the preferred heating option for some of their best sellers.

Small, adaptable, and resourceful, can the air fryer replace other kitchen appliances and gadgets in your home? While the popularity of air fryers has soared, it raised questions about the need for an air fryer and a convection oven. To help distinguish the differences between the classic versus hip kitchen appliance, we dived into the core and fundamental differences between an air fryer and a convection oven.

Whats The Cost Difference

Air fryers are significantly cheaper than ovens, which is unsurprising given it contains a much smaller cooking capacity. These can typically fit around 1.2L to 12L worth of food, with prices starting from just under $100 and reach up to $500. Alternatively, the standard oven capacity generally sits at 80L and models usually retail between $750 and $2,300.

Of course, there are always exceptions. Stores like Kmart and Bunnings, as well as online retailers such as Kogan, have recently started to sell cheap air fryers at a fraction of the price. This includes products from big-name brands including Philips and Tefal.

Oven And Grilled Recipes That Are Good In An Air Fryer

Before I had my air fryer, I fried almost everything in my oven. Im not a fan of splatters, too much soaked-in grease, and the messy cleanup of frying on top of the stove.

When converting from oven times to air fryer times, I typically cut by one-third. However, I like to check at the halfway point to see how close the food is to being done.

Here are some delicious oven-fried foods that are also good in an air fryer:

Buffalo Wings These chicken wings are super easy to make, either in your oven or your air fryer. In fact, I usually pop them into the air fryer basket while theyre still frozen. However, when I cook them in the oven, I thaw them first.

Salmon Cakes Also known as salmon patties or salmon croquettes, youll love these in either your oven or your air fryer.

Roasted Brussels Sprouts I used to make these in the regular oven, but now I use my air fryer. Theyre crispy on the outside and tender in the middle!

Pork Chops Rub a little bit of oil and some seasoning on these pork chops before putting them in the air fryer. Youll be amazed by how delicious they turn out!

So Are Air Fryers Or Convection Ovens Better

Air fryers cook quicker than convection ovens and don’t require heating a large appliance, like your full-sized oven. Their perforated racks also allow fat to drip onto the drip pan so your food doesn’t absorb excess oil, which minimizes calories and becomes crispier since it is more dry.

The downside of air fryers is they can’t cook as much food at one time as you can in an oven. Food cooks better in an air fryer when it’s in a single layer. Some foods, like French fries, can be stacked, but should be tossed at least once. Air fryers can also be loud although many manufacturers consider this in development.

What You Need To Know About Convection Ovens

A staple appliance in many households , a convection oven houses a fan similar to an air fryer and an exhaust system unlike a conventional oven . Convection ovens were often referred to as toaster ovens, but they are different from a traditional toaster as they incorporate a fan while cooking .

Convection ovens house a small rack big enough for a small sheet pan and allow you to control both the temperature and the time. Like a conventional oven, convection ovens work with a hinged, frontal door where the food is placed on a pan and slid in. The convection oven’s fan works to circulate food to evenly cook and crisp the food, similarly to the air fryer. However, while the air fryer’s fan lives on the top of the appliance, a convection oven lives in the back.

Which One Should You Choose

Well, when everything is said and done, which style of air fryer should you choose?

This is a question only you can answer, depending on your specific situation. For example, my household only has two people in it and we have an incredibly small kitchen. Thats why we pretty much have to go for a basket style.

What I would say though, is that I would generally recommend going for a larger oven style if you do have the space and portability is not a problem. You could cook so much more in there and not have to worry about air flow.

The only caveat to this is rotisserie chicken! If you love it, then your only option is the air fryer oven

What Is Air Frying

Its a clever marketing term for something thats been around for decadescooking with convection.

Convection Cooking 101

  • In a traditional convection oven, fans are used to circulate heated air around the inside of the oven.
  • When food is first placed in an oven it is surrounded by a layer of natural cool air.
  • The forced hot air from the convection fan removes that blanket of cool air from the food along with surface moisture.
  • Throughout the cooking process, the fan keeps the warm air continuously moving around the oven. This results in more evenly cooked foods with tender moist interiors and crisp browned exteriors.

If youve read our post on everything you need to know about convection toaster ovens this might all be sounding very familiar.

Air frying is basically convection cooking on steroids. The fan moves at a faster speed for a higher rate of airflow resulting in a crispier exterior. According to Wikipedia, this is intended to simulate deep frying while using less oil.
