How to Cook a Whole Chicken in an Air Fryer

Toss the fries with the oil in a medium bowl, then sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon salt and several grinds of pepper. Working in batches if necessary, put the fries in an even layer in the air fryer basket with no overlapping and cook, turning them halfway through, until golden brown and crisp, 14 to 16 minutes.

What Cant Be Cooked In An Air Fryer

Not surprisingly, there are some foods that cant be cooked in an air fryer. Generally speaking, dishes that have a wet batter arent suitable for air frying the batter wont set properly, and itll be very difficult to clean the machine after, so youre better off sticking with a deep fryer.

Other foods that dont work so well include raw greens such as broccoli, and dishes that require water, like rice. If youre a big cheese fan, then air frying foods with cheese isnt going to be the best idea – youll end up with a whole load of mess rather than a tasty treat.

General Tips For Cooking Chicken In The Air Fryer

OK, so now that you know why to cook chicken in the air fryer, its time to find out how. In general, you can do pretty much anything that you would do in a regular oven. The main difference is that you will not be using a pan. The chicken or chicken pieces go straight into the air fryer basket.

However, if you have something really saucy or with a lot of cheese that could melt, you can totally use a tray. The air fryer manufacturers sell a lot of accessories and accessory kits like this so you can find just the right pan for your air fryer. Or, you can use aluminum foil with the edges folded up. If youre going to use foil, make sure you read these important tips first.

In addition to not needing a pan, the other main difference between the air fryer and the oven is that the air fryer tends to cook things more quickly. What I typically do is to set my timer for 30-40% less time than I would for a regular oven. Then I check the food and decide if it needs longer or not. For meat and poultry, I use an instant read thermometer to check the internal temperature. You want it to read 165°F for poultry. Some people take poultry out at a bit lower temperature, like 155°F and let it rest to come up the remainder of the way. I do think you get juicier chicken this way but it is not recommended for food safety reasons, as you can see here on the foodsafety.gov website.

Don’t Overcrowd The Fryer Basket

Resist the temptation to fill your air fryer’s basket to the top with French fries as you would with a deep-fat fryer. With an air fryer, there’s no hot oil to get in between the fries, cooking them from every angle. Instead, packing a basket can cause cold spots where the air can’t reach. Make sure there’s plenty of room around your food and give it a toss halfway through cooking so the heat can cook everything evenly.

You don’t want foods to sit too close to the heating coil either, which is generally positioned over the basket like the broiler element in an oven. Even though the fan in an air fryer circulates heat around the food, the bulk of the heat is still coming from the top. So be mindful about placing foods too close to the coil and be sure to flip or rotate them occasionally to prevent, say, one side of a pork chop or a block of glazed tofu from overbrowning or drying out.

My Toaster Oven Is Nearly As Good As An Air Fryer

Everyone raves about brussels sprouts in the air fryer so I decided to try an experiment. I cooked three batchesone in the air fryer, one in my toaster oven with the convection feature, and one in my standard oven.

The air-fried sprouts were the best. They were perfectly browned and crisped on the outside and tender but not mushy on the inside. And they were the fastest to finish, ready in about 20 minutes.

The standard oven was subpar. It took a long time to preheat, and then a long time to cook the sprouts I probably should have cranked its heat up higher than 350 degrees. By the time the sprouts were brown on the outside they were too soft on the inside.

But the convection toaster oven delivered results nearly as good as the air fryer. It needed a few minutes to heat up, but it was hot by the time I was finished slicing the sprouts and tossing them in a little oil and salt. And it took five minutes longer for the sprouts to brown and crisp, but the flavor and consistency was comparable.

Plus, it was much quieter than the air fryer, and I already have it and use it, so it doesnt take up any more space in my kitchen. And the trays I used for cooking the sprouts only take as much room as two dinner plates in my dishwasher. For me, as much as I wanted to love the air fryer, the toaster oven comes out on top.

How To Air Fry Firm Vegetables

  • Root Vegetables
  • Winter Squash

To cook firm vegetables in an air fryer, preheat your air fryer to 375 degrees F . Prep your veggies by chopping them to the size you want Optionally drizzle with oil and add to your air fryer in as flat of a layer as possible. Cook for 20 to 30 minutes, shaking the air fryer pan a few times during cooking to promote even cooking.

Common Mistakes Youre Probably Making With Your Air Fryer

Cleaning it incorrectly or infrequently: Not many of us look forward to cleaning up post-meal. But, to keep your air fryer in decent condition, crumbs should not be left behind. Generally, washing the air fryer with hot soapy water after each use, combined with an occasional soak and light scrub, will help keep your appliance squeaky clean.

Not checking on your air fryer while its cooking: For best results, youll want to periodically check up on your food, which means opening up your air fryer. Most units are designed so you can open them, check on your food, and shake the basket around allowing food to be evenly cooked and crispy without burning or drying it out.

Overcrowding the basket: A mistake a lot of first-time buyers make is filling their air fryer to the brim with food, and expecting it all to magically cook evenly and thoroughly. It is recommended you should never fill your basket more than halfway, so larger portions of foods must be cooked in batches. The general rule of thumb is: resist the temptation to feed a crowd, all in one go.

Not pre-heating: When using an oven to bake or cook, you would usually pre-heat before cooking. Well, the same goes for an air fryer. Spending a few extra minutes waiting for the machine to reach optimum cooking conditions will potentially help you avoid under-baked choc chip cookies or unevenly cooked potato gems.

Air Fryer Cooking Tips You Need to Know

Using an air fryer doesnt always mean you can completely avoid oil. Most recipes still call for some oil or butter to be used, especially for greasing the pans or air fryer racks to prevent your baked goods from sticking.

Aside from preventing sticking, using a little bit of oil or butter also adds flavor. Just like how youd spread butter or oil on a baking sheet/pan to keep your baked goods from getting stuck, this rule also applies when you use an air fryer to bake.

Yankel Polak, head chef at ButcherBox, told Insider that it’s possible to cook a delicious steak in an air fryer.

“Rub the steak with a little olive oil and a generous amount of salt and pepper before cooking,” he said. “The olive oil helps it get a really good sear and the salt and pepper give a simple, yet satisfying flavor.”

To make sure your steak cooks evenly, Yankel added, flip it over halfway through the cooking time. This ensures both sides of the meat have contact with the hot surface of the basket.

What Does An Air Fryer Do Why Do Air Fryers Cook So Fast

An air fryer is a kitchen appliance that everyone is raving about! According to Wikipedia...

An air fryer is a kitchen appliance that cooks by circulating hot air around the food. A mechanical fan circulates the hot air around the food at high speed, cooking the food and producing a crispy layer via the Maillard effect.

Counter-top air fryers are a healthy alternative to the traditional way of frying food in a pot of oil. Using circulated hot air, this appliance can do so many things in the kitchen.

Why Cook Chicken In The Air Fryer

How to Cook Bacon in Air Fryer | Easy Air Fryer Bacon
  • It has great texture. Air fryer chicken has a nice firm, but juicy texture, much like roasted or baked chicken. So, if you like roasted/baked chicken, you will like this.
  • It takes less time to cook. Were not talking tons less, but quite a bit less, especially for larger pieces. A whole chicken, for instance, can be done in 40 minutes in the air fryer but that same size chicken would be closer to an hour in a regular oven. Chicken breasts take around 15 minutes in the air fryer but 20+ in the regular oven.
  • Its energy efficient. You dont have to heat up your whole oven to cook a batch of chicken. Thats less energy used and less heat generated in your kitchen. Its also great if you want to cook other things in your oven. Then the chicken gets done separately.
  • Quick preheat time. The air fryer preheats in 2-3 minutes. You can put it on to preheat and by the time your chicken is out of the fridge and seasoned, you can put it right in. This saves time and also energy.
  • Oh, the caramelization! While the texture of the meat is similar to roasted, you get more browning, and thus more flavor, on the outside and it happens in a shorter amount of time. This is because the air fryer circulates the heat so well.

Up your cooking game by air-frying these foods

Want to mix up the way you cook without spending extra time and effort in the kitchen? Of course you do and thats where the very best air fryers come in.

Providing an alternative way to rustle up a meal, air fryers use air to heat up your food in a similar way to convection ovens. This means hot air is circulated around the food until its cooked and has a crispy exterior.

Since the food is cooked using hot air rather than conducted heat in a pan or direct heat from a grill, the cooking times are much quicker than youd expect from a traditional gas or electric range or hob, for example.

And, while it is possible to deep-fry food in a matter of minutes or even seconds, another advantage of air fryers is that they require very little oil at all, making them a healthier option than deep or shallow frying.

If youre thinking about investing in an air fryer, its likely youre going to want to find the top option for your budget, and since these machines take up a fair amount of space on your countertop its well worth finding out about all the meals you could make in one and there are literally hundreds.

Its probably fair to say that a lot of people associate air fryers, such as the Tefal ActiFry Genius XL, with creating healthier fries or perfectly crispy potatoes, but what else can these machines cook?
