Remember the first time you used an Instant Pot? Yeah, this sort of like that, but turned down a notch or two. The Instant Vortex has four pre-programmed settings to air fry, bake, roast and reheat similar to the Instant Pot’s seven settings. The caveat here is the Vortex only has eight buttons, four of which are those programs, plus Start, Cancel, Time and Temp. The dial in the center of the screen easily allows you to adjust the temperature in 5-degree intervals and the text is large and easy to read. Even if you’re someone who hates reading manuals, we have a feeling you’ll be able to figure this one out.

We tested some air fryer pork ribs with bbq sauce and it was a winner! This is a powerful air fryer and cooked the ribs perfectly. It was large enough to cook two trays of ribs. We just needed to rotate the racks to get all the ribs cooked evenly. The results were awesome ribs with the perfect bite.

- Its large, so if you have a very small kitchen itll be a dominating appliance. But because theres so many features on it, you might not need to have other appliances and the Vortex might be your go-to source for cooking.
- Because its an oven, theres several racks you can cook on. So that means the top rack will be closer to the hot circulating heating element. If youre cooking the same food on all 3 racks, youll have to rotate more often to get the food to cook evenly. Thats the case for all oven-style air fryers. Just be aware of that if youre looking to make your first purchase an oven-style model.

I have reviewed dozens of air fryers over the years, but it’s the Instant Vortex Mini 4-in-1 Air Fryer that I keep in my kitchen. This is the smallest and potentially the cheapest air fryer I’ve tried, but it looks the part of a more premium product with four fun colors and a tactile control panel.

My hubby bought me this magic machine for Christmas and boy is it amazing. I absolutely love this airfryer. Make burgers in chips in less than 30 minutes and chips are golden brown and crispy. Fried chicken in 15 minutes. This machine has changed my life for the good. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

The Instant Pot has a devoted fan base and its maker, Instant Brands, has a line of small kitchen appliances that’s expanded over the years to include more than just pressure cookers. We’ve seen the company release an immersion circulator, a blender and multicookers.

Now, Instant Brands is getting into the air fryer game with the $119 Instant Vortex Plus. I dubbed 2019 the year of the air fryer back in March, and this is proving my point. However, in true Instant fashion, it’s not just an air fryer. No, no, my friends. This is a 7-in-1 countertop cooker that can bake, broil, reheat, air fry, dehydrate, roast and rotate for rotisserie-style recipes.
This combination air fryer dreams big and gets a lot of things right, but it’s not without its flaws, and my testing experience left me hoping Instant will make improvements and rerelease it. Should you buy the Vortex Plus? For now, I’d hold off and hang on to your old air fryer. Here’s why.

The PowerXL Vortex Air Fryer is a standard countertop appliance with 10 presets, depending on the size. The 2 qt has 4 presets, 3 qt has 8, and the 5 and 7 qt models have 10 cooking presets. These have different powers, and they are 100W, 1200W, 1500W, and 1700W, respectively.
How Do You Use The Vortex Plus
First, you need to pre-clean the appliance. Its very simple, and involves wiping out the drawer, washing the rack, and running the air-fry programme on 205°C/400°F for 18 minutes. Theres a slightly plasticky smell when you do this, but we didnt find that odour occurred again and we used the fryer once or twice a day for nearly a month.
As you might expect, when in operation, theres a fanlike sound. Youll notice it the first time you use the appliance, but its not so loud that it is grating or intrusive after the first few times, it just fades into the general background noise of your kitchen.
When the air fryer reaches the set temperature, it will beep to let you know to add the food you want to cook. Theres a second series of beeps during the programme to tell you to turn the food for an even crisp, and a third series of beeps when the programme is finished.
There are no pre-sets on the appliance. Nor does the Instant manual give any approximate cooking times or temperatures, or provide any recipes. Initially, youre in the dark about how long to cook something for, and at what heat.
Then we cooked fries for 15 minutes at 185°C, and the results were excellent: a crunchy bite, fluffy inside, and very much akin to a McDonalds fry they didnt taste like oven chips at all.
Armed with the understanding that it was a case of trial and error to figure out times and temperatures, we ran a battery of tests.

First off, Instant has a number of slightly different appliances in this range. Were reviewing the Vortex Plus air fryer, which features ClearCook and OdourErase technology.
With a stainless-steel trim wrapped around a high-gloss black body, the Vortex Plus has a characteristic air fryer design. A deep drawer with a chunky vertical handle forms the bottom of the appliance, while a sloping touchscreen sits on top, complete with a silver control dial for scrolling.
If youre not familiar with conventional air fryers, it can initially feel strange to cook in a pull-out compartment. You cant quite shake the feeling you are putting your frozen chips in a high-tech sock drawer, but the benefit of the set-up is an appliance that is child-proof, reduces cooking odours, and just makes cooking a meal tidier somehow.
Inside the box, you get the 5.7 litre/6 QT air fryer, an internal tray for the drawer, a manual, and the safety and warranty leaflet. This is not an appliance with accessories you need to store.
While its a decent size at 32.5cm x 29cm x 30cm with an extra 8cm/3.1in for the handle, its not an overwhelming appliance on your countertop, possibly because the slanted touchscreen mitigates against the sense of a monolithic black box.
And at 5.95kg , its not a heavy appliance, but its designed to have a permanent countertop presence.

Using The Instant Vortex Plus 6
It really couldnt be easier to use this air fryer. I like the angled control panel, which means I dont have to stand on tiptoes to see the menu. Once switched on, the controls illuminate, and the cooking modes are displayed. After selecting a cooking mode, its just a case of pressing the time/temp button and spinning the dial for quick adjustment of these settings. Plus, it remembers the last time and temperature settings you used, which is handy if you regularly cook the same foods. There is an audible beep when youre pressing the controls, I didnt find it annoying but it can be switched off if you prefer.
When you start a cooking mode the air fryer automatically begins preheating and then the display tells you to add food once its hot enough. Another feature I liked was the reminder to turn food part way through cooking.
The basket has a chunky handle and pulls out with ease. The perforated cooking tray slots into the basket and is held in place with grippy rubberised sections on each of the four sides, this means it doesnt fall out when you tip food out of the basket. Not only does it allow air to circulate around your food for great crispy results, but excess oil drips through the tray into the basket underneath, giving you even healthier meals. I like that its removable though, so you can get it out of the way if youre using the air fryer to bake foods like bread and cakes.

We bought this as a gift ourselves as parents-to-be.We lived on ready-made meals in the early weeks of our babys life it was just so easy to pop them in here to cook while getting on with other things. The timer function means you dont have to worry about anything burning. Nowadays we use it pretty much every day for roast veggies, chicken, toasted sandwiches, pastries, you name it. The black finish is sleek, and the matte model resists fingerprints so its easy to keep looking new.
There are both digital and analog versions of this air fryer. We tested the digital version both at home and in the Lab, and all the testers found the touch controls simple and intuitive to use. The temperature can be set from 200-400 degrees Fahrenheit and the timer up to 60 minutes, which is plenty of cooking range for most air-fried recipes. Our Lab testers found that this produced amazing French fries and crispy chicken tenders. The taste and texture outmatched several pricier models. Cleaning is also easier than others. The basket and several other parts can be put in the dishwasher, though the metal racks have to be carefully hand-washed.
The downsides here come when youre looking for a versatile machine. It wasnt able to bake cornbread and definitely couldnt roast a chicken. If youre interested in using an air fryer to dehydrate snacks, you might want a model that allows you to set the timer for longer.

How I Tested The Best Air Fryers
To test the Instant Vortex, I considered factors like portability, versatility, and overall performance. To judge portability, I first assessed the size and weight of the air fryer and the length of the cord . I looked at how simple and straightforward the machine is to assemble without instructions, and also considered how easy the control panel was to read and use.
I cooked three commonly air-fried foods in the Instant Vortex: fries, wings and cookies.

The best air fryer should be able to cook crisp, evenly-fried foods, as well as bake, roast, and more. To test versatility and overall performance, I cooked three commonly air-fried foods: chicken wings, french fries, and chocolate chip cookies. To maintain consistency, I cooked each food at the same temperature for the same amount of time in each machine. I then observed how evenly each food was cooked and how golden, burnt, or underdone the color looked. I also took note of how easy it was to remove the basket and shake foods. After each recipe test I cleaned each machine by hand, and noted how easy each air fryer was to care for.
Do You Add Oil To The Instant Vortex Air Fryer
Unlike a traditional deep fryer, the air fryer uses air to crisp the outside of the food. You will not want to add a large amount of oil to the air fryer to cook food.
Some recipes require you to spray a small amount of oil on the outside of the food you’re cooking to help it crisp and prevent it from drying out, but the air fryer offers a healthier cooking option than submerging your food in oil to cook it.
