Design: Attractive Enough For Counter Storage

While this fryer isnt what Id call pretty, its got a few design elements that make it look more attractive, like the rounded edges, the metal trim, and the dark gray surfaces that look understated and classic.

The front handles are plenty large, so theyre easy to grab and hold, which is great since food may need a little shake or stir during cooking. Theyre also a good shape and size to make it easy to pour food out of the basket after cooking. The fryer isnt overly tall, so it should slide easily under cabinets to stay on the counter when not in use.

The controls are simple to use, although I did have a few moments where I wasn’t sure what to do. A Start/Pause button let me pause the cooking on either side of the fryer, but when food on one side was finished sooner than I expected, I wanted to stop the cooking rather than pause it. The solution was to use the Time function to let the fryer know that the cooking time was done. While that worked well, it wasnt obvious at a glance.

I had to consult the manual to familiarize myself with the Smart Finish and Match options, but it was easy enough to set the cooking time and temperature.

Features: Dual Baskets With Coordinated Cooking Options

Air fryers have gone from new and innovative to ubiquitous. But that doesnt mean theres nothing new to be found. This Ninja model solves the not-enough-space problem while also freeing cooks from having to choose whether the wings or the fries get air fried. The dual baskets, along with the ability to control the left and right side separately, means that either side can have its own time and temperature settings. Even better, though, are the Smart Finish and Match options.

With Smart Finish, the cook can set separate cooking times and temperatures for each basket, then let the machine handle starting the shorter cooking time so the two items finish at the same time. Of course, that doesnt help if the cook is guessing how long something will take, but its perfect when making family favorites, so the fish and chips are done at the same time.

The Match option simply repeats the settings from one side to the other. Its not an earthshaking innovation, but when a double batch of wings is in the fryer, its nice to be able to set the time and temp a single time, then start both at the same time. I noticed that the right side cooked just a little hotter than the left side. It wasnt a dealbreaker and the difference wasnt major, but it was enough to notice that foods on the right were slightly darker than those on the left.

Sucking The Life Out Of Some Fruit

Initially, I didnt even know this new Ninja was also a dehydrator. To be clear, a dehydrator just dries out your food so you can go full upper-to-middle-class-Central-Coast-Democrat-mom with your snacks. You can dehydrate stuff in an oven, but it takes aaallll day. The Ninja does it in four to eight hours, depending on what youre dehydrating. I put in some sliced apple, ginger, and gooseberries before bed, and awoke to what I can only describe as the most flavor-packed medley of fruit and flavor that I have ever experienced from dried food. The ginger was so tasty and zingy, it made me drool.

Cleaning: By Hand Or Machine

The baskets and their crisper trays were easy to clean by hand, and theyre also dishwasher-safe. While it was easy to find room in the dishwasher for the trays, the baskets are large and the handles got in the way. I washed the baskets in the dishwasher once, but I actually preferred washing them by hand.

Just A Ball Of Mayonnaise

One of VICEs own suggested the idea of mayonnaise, and I loved it. My mother is Midwestern, so connecting with my family history via the mayonnaise and/or dairy highway is an honorable venture that is always encouraged. All I did was freeze some mayo in a tub overnight, do my batter-bread dance the next day, and air fry a ball for three minutes at 390 degrees. The result was perhaps not aesthetically pleasing, but an absolute delight for my palate the mayo melted into a buttery layer in the middle of the batter, which was excellent for breakfast with creamy coffee. Three hours later, my stomach felt unwell, but it was worth it.

While the Ninja air fryer I tested is a traditional model with some added features, Ninja has also created some innovative appliances that combine air frying with other functions. While Id recommend the model I tested to folks who love air frying, Id be remiss if I didnt mention Ninjas other options.

My What A Coy Burrito

The first thing I noticed was that the Ninja sounds like a Prius when its frying, and for some reason, that made me feel safe, which is cool. I plopped in this frozen Amys burrito at 390 degrees Fahrenheit for five minutes on each side. Upon flipping it, I noticed my tortilla-wrapped jewel had become half-unwrapped and hardened, like a come-hither shard. Weird, but I was into it. Tapping open my burrito like crème brûlée was a cursed sensation Ill never forget.

Is The Ninja Dz201 Easy To Use

Ill be honest, the Ninja Double Air Fryer can be intimidating at first with its multitude of buttons and the dual basket setup. Luckily, after a few runs, youll get the hang of it.

If you watched the video above, its just like a mini version of a full-sized oven. The only challenging part is setting the right amount of time and temperature for each recipe.

You wont be able to memorize it, but the good thing is youll have a quick start guide courtesy of Shark Ninja.

On top of that, theres also an included recipe book to get you started right away.

In comparison to the Ninja Foodi Air Fryer Max XL, this model doesnt automatically pause when removing the air fryer basket. To ensure youre following the cooking time religiously, youll have to pause and start it manually whenever youre shaking or flipping your ingredients.

On a slightly different note:

The cleanup is easy-peasy.

First of all, its dishwasher safe, so you can simply load the basket and crisper plate into the dishwasher.

If not, then you can always hand wash itwhich is also straightforward.

It has a non-stick coating, so most food residue will come off quickly.By the way, only use a soft sponge and non-abrasive cleaners to prevent damaging the coating.

Last but not least, use a damp cloth to wipe the main unit.

I Just Miss The Fairground

When I moved to New York, I fell in love with Italian-American cookies. My present roommate and dear friend also grew up in Long Island, so I also wanted to throw some rainbow cookies and Circos butter cookies into the mix. For advanced cooks or amateur cooks, this is an excellent feature. It makes sure that both foods will still be hot when served. Plus, you dont have to worry about setting a timer for yourself on when to start the second dish.

Should You Buy The Ninja Foodi Dz401 6

The Ninja Foodi DZ401 6-in-1 XL 2-Basket Air Fryer is a very large air fryer. It’s perfectly suited to large households or those who find their solitary air fryer lacking. A dual drawer design does seriously change the cooking options in your home, because you can cook two elements of a meal at once, but note that with the cooking controls on the Ninja Foodi DZ401 I did find that there was a bit of a learning curve. Perhaps it’s just me, but I found it easy to confuse the Match and Smart Finish settings.

I also noted the lack of shake reminder or pre-heat settings with this air fryer, which is something that could impact the precision of your cooking times. However, it’s a speedy choice with a very high maximum temperature that can crisp up frozen food in under ten minutes. That’s really impressive. Plus, cleaning was a breeze.

Who doesnt? Theyre so pretty. Theyre also an excellent source of protein for vegetarians, but sometimes I get freaked out by the watery white bits. I cracked two in for five minutes at 375 degrees with a kiss of avocado oil underneath, and they came out absolutely, golden-yoke perfect. A little over-cooked, but thats my own fault. The even heat-dispensing hand of Ninja was in full tap-dance power for this one.
