What Foods Can You Cook In An Air Fryer

Should You Get an Air Fryer?

The air fryer is INCREDIBLY versatile and you can literally do everything from French fries to cheesecake and a LOT of stuff in between.

My family especially loves cauliflower and broccoli in the air fryer.

That might sound crazy considering my older 2 girls are in the tween years, but yes they actually LOVE when my wife or I throw cauliflower or broccoli in the air fryer.

We just break into small chunks, toss with a little olive oil, salt, pepper and maybe a hint of spice, and then fry in the air fryer for about 15 minutes about 350° and they come out tender but crispy with a nice bite.

But thats just scratching the surface of what you can cook with an air fryer. They also work great for:

  • Ravioli
  • Hard-boiled eggs

And, of course, french fries work GREAT in an air fryer.

No matter whether youre using an air fryer or another cooking method on your fries, the oil you use DOES matter. So why not take a moment and review my post on the Best Oil for Frying Frozen French Fries .

How To Choose An Air Fryer

Buying an air fryer for the first time can be a challenge. I understand!, is a new product and we are not sure what exactly look for. Let me give you some ideas.

Today, I am happy to share with you the most important features you have to look at when choosing an air fryer. Here you will see the most relevant aspects to look for the brands that stand out the most and the important features you should be aware of.

You Can Cook More Than Just French Fries

Air fryers are great at roasting veggies. But they can also whip up desserts like cakes, cookies and pies, Fields says.

If you can bake it in the oven, you can make it in the air fryer, she says. But youll do so at 30 degrees lower temperature and in half the time.

Also, battered foods work well in the air fryer. For example, you can make corn dogs by dipping the dogs in a thicker batter, wrapping them in parchment paper and freezing them for a couple of hours before setting them in the air fryer.

As for fried Oreos? Use a thinner, sweet batter and start them on a small piece of parchment paper before transferring into the air fryer, Fields recommends.

Why Are Air Fryers So Popular

Air fryers are the latest kitchen fadit feels like everyones getting them and loving the results. Especially over the past year, weve seen more and more air fryers in friends houses. But why exactly are air fryers so popular?

Air fryers are popular because they are affordable, dont use as much oil as a traditional fryer, and heat food evenly and quickly. These appliances are much healthier than deep fryers and work more rapidly than a standard convection oven.

In this article, I will look at the reasons behind the new popularity of air fryers. Ill discuss their pros and cons, why they have become so common, and whether or not the air fryer craze is a fad or here to stay. Im also going to discuss how healthy air fryers are compared to regular ovens and deep fryers.

Air fryers are so popular now mostly due to the uptick in home cooking last year and increased awareness on the health benefits of cutting down on oils when frying foods.

These appliances have been around for over a decade now but are having their moment in the sun this year for these reasons. More people are buying them and using them, and those who own air fryers swear by them.

As I mentioned above, the first and probably biggest reason for the popularity is the pandemic. It led to more people cooking from home, and a knock-on effect was a rise in the purchase of more specialized appliances. As people bought more things and created food at home, the air fryer became more popular.

Top 3: Best Air Fryers for Every Budget

Deep fryers rely on oil to give food that signature crunchy exterior while still maintaining that soft inside. The air fryer, though, uses very hot air to achieve the same outcome, almost operating like a mini oven. A heating element at the top of the air fryer forces hot air down and around the food as its suspended in a basket. The air leaves the food with that crispy taste.

    They’re Great For Small Households

For downsizers and empty-nesters who find themselves cooking smaller meals, the air fryer can just about replace the conventional oven.

It’s also great for renters who may have substandard ovens, or for small spaces that don’t have an oven at all.

If you love camping or live in a tiny home, an air fryer can also be handy.

    The Best Foods To Air

Any foods youre used tofrying, like potatoes and chicken, generally turn out really well in the airfryer.

If youre looking for something to air-fry, Id recommend home-made sweet potato fries, Cucuzza says. It can be difficult to make them crispy in a conventional oven. Instead, sprinkle them with your favorite seasoning, throw them in the air fryer, and enjoy!

One last thought: If you want to invest in an air fryer, Cucuzza recommends looking for models that use BPA-free plastic.

The top air fryers Ive tested come in a range of designs and sizes. My absolute favorite is the Ninja Foodi Dual Zone , because you can cook two elements of a meal simultaneously, in different drawers and even in different modes. Some air fryers are more like miniature ovens, such as the Tower Xpress Pro Combo Air Fryer review I conducted, that not only had multiple layers for cooking different elements of a meal at once, but also had an attachment to rotisserie a whole chicken. Truly, delicious.

Air fryers are fast, and once you understand how they work, they can be used to heat frozen foods or cook all sorts of fresh food like chicken, steak, pork chops, salmon and veggies. Most meats require no added oil because theyre already so juicy: just season them with salt and your favorite herbs and spices. Make sure you stick to dry seasonings less moisture leads to crispier results. If you want to baste meats with barbecue sauce or honey, wait until the last couple minutes of cooking.

Lean cuts of meat, or foods with little or no fat, require oil to brown and crisp up. Brush boneless chicken breasts and pork chops with a bit of oil before seasoning. Vegetable oil or canola oil is usually recommended due to its higher smoke point, meaning it can stand up to the high heat in an air fryer.

Vegetables also need to be tossed in oil before air frying. We recommend sprinkling them with salt before air frying, but use a little less than youre used to: The crispy, air fried bits pack a lot of flavor. We love air frying broccoli florets, Brussels sprouts and baby potato halves. They come out so crispy! Butternut squash, sweet potatoes and beets all seem to get sweeter, and green beans and peppers take no time at all.

The Truth About What Air Fryers Actually Do To Your Food

Air fryers just might be the new Instant Pots. These seemingly magic home appliances are compact and claim to be a healthy alternative to deep-frying, thanks to significantly less oil.

According to Taste of Home, these appliances are essentially tiny convection ovens that sit on your countertop. That means they blow a lot of hot air down from a fan at the top of the appliance, and only use a very amount of oil. The hot air hits your food and then circulates all around while the food cooks. Because the air fryer is so small, it also makes the food cook faster and the hot air comes into better contact with all the surface of the food, which helps get it so crisp .

There are a couple of downsides to air fryers. First up is that the small size does mean that cooking for several people or a family means you’ll have to cook in batches. Some foods do not work well in the air fryer either, like unbreaded cheese or anything that has a wet batter. Though air fryers get food pretty close to tasting fried, it still just isn’t quite the same even if it is crisp. Don’t forget that air fryers can be pricey too.

To Preheat Or Not To Preheat

    That is the question.

Unlike the big oven on your range, an air fryer does not need a whole half hour to get to temp. A few minutes of preheating should do it. Some air fryer models have a light that indicates when the unit is preheated.

Manufacturers recommend preheating, but if you like, you can skip preheating altogether. If youre starting food in a cold air fryer, your cook time might be three or four minutes longerno big whoop! Try it both ways, and see what gives you the best result. It might depend on the recipe.

    Introduction To The Air Fryer

Are cheap air fryers any good? â Which? News

The air fryers technology was invented by Dutch entrepreneur Fred van der Weij, and made its first public appearance at the Berlin IFA consumer electronics fair in 2010, where it created a lot of buzz. Philips, the company that presented the air fryer, had been working on a way to fry food with less fat for several years using a combination of heat from halogen bulbs and strong airflow inside the device. The form factor , in the shape of a large egg, made the new product friendly and approachable, and also facilitated ease of cleaning. .

In the intervening decade, the air fryer has come to rival the Instant Pot as the new, super popular appliance changing how we do things in the kitchen. Despite the name, these appliances have proved extremely versatile. Far from being a single purpose appliance for frying food, air fryers can cook pretty much anything without the need for oil.

It makes sense no one likes soggy food, especially when the texture should be crispy. Crunchy food appears to appeal to some deeply held instinct perhaps the sense that fresh fruits and vegetables are at their best when theyre at their crunchiest, and so some part of our brains identify crunch as a good proxy for healthy.

Burnt Dried And Failed Air Fryer Dishes

Air frying your food is trial and error. Especially in the beginning. One of the most asked questions I receive is how to use an air fryer for the first time and how to make crispy french fries. On the internet and in air fryer recipe books you can find a lot of information about how to set your air fryer for a particular dish or recipe. But there are a lot of air fryers from different manufacturers, this means that every air fryers prepares food a bit differently compared to the other.

So, it might happen that your dish gets burned, gets dried out or just fails. I also experience this when trying out things in my air fryer. I am always experimenting with my air fryer. I am just curious to know what happens inside the air fryer when frying different types of vegetables, fruits and meat for instance.

Once I tried to dry fruits, such as slices of banana, mango and strawberries. The first time I tried it, I used my Philips Airfryer XXL and the standard frying basket with the mesh bottom. Well, the strawberries became very soft and got stuck between the mesh bottom of the basket.

    TIP:

Last example was that I wanted to grill some mozzarella slices. So I put the slices inside the air fryer, turned it on and came back a few minutes later. I was expecting grilled cheese slices, but in reality I made a grilled cheese frying basket. All the cheese got stuck between the meshed pattern of the frying basket and this was a daunted task to clean afterwards.
