Getting the oven out of the box and plugged in was relatively straight forward. I removed all the excess packaging materials and gave the accessories a rinse in warm soapy water before trying to begin the initial oven burnoff which is essential when using an air fryer for the first time.

Normally when testing an air fryer I like to set the oven to 400ðF and let the oven run for a 15-minute cycle to burn off any oils or residues left over from the production and packing process. Here is where I ran into my first hangup.

Im not usually one to dive into the users manual before getting started and I rarely need to check the quick start guide, especially if Im doing something straightforward and not using a special feature. Now I know this isnt the best practice, but my enthusiasm usually takes hold and I find myself fiddling with buttons without stopping to look at the directions. Normally this isnt an issue but with the NuWave Bravo XL, I definitely had to run through the users manual a few times before I could operate this machine effectively.

The control panel, though straightforward is somewhat difficult to use, and even after a few days of using the machine I still had questions that I needed the manual to answer. The 12 buttons and multiple stages/settings possible with this unit made it unnecessarily difficult to achieve simple cooking tasks at times. Im sure after a few weeks with this oven I would be a pro, but out of the box it was frustrating at times to use.

What I Dont Like About The Nuwave Bravo Xl Smart Oven

The price. Compared to the Breville smart oven its not a big deal but if youre coming from a sub-$100 Air fryer, the price can be a shocker. I think that NuWave could have made this for around $100-$150 and theyd be selling like hotcakes. But then again, it probably costs a lot to manufacture a device like this.

One thing I dont care for is that the fan is a little louder than it should be. For $180, I should get a device thats as quiet as the other convection ovens Ive owned. Not a huge issue, but something to be aware of if youre averse to any kind of noisy fan.

I havent owned the NuWave Bravo XL for that long but as with ALL other non-stick cookware, Im wondering how easy it will be to replace the non-stick broiler rack. All of the non stick cookware pieces in my convection ovens have worn out after a year or so of use. This is NOT a mark against the NuWave Bravo XL Smart Oven, but its a consideration for all convection ovens. Replaceability is important.
