  • How Does The Nuwave Bravo Xl Air Fryer Look/feel/sit

The Nuwave Bravo XL is a front-loading, glass door, countertop toaster oven. It has a stainless steel finish and while not a heavy appliance it is sturdy and feels well made. It has a large footprint at 19.5 x 15 x 11 inches which is increased by the 2 ich long spacers attached to the back of the machine.

It has a digital display to the right of the oven chamber with a large selector knob and an input for the temperature probe. The control panel consists of 12 individual button choices in addition to the control knob and is a bit busier than I normally like in my appliances.

While this oven is definitely on the larger side it will hopefully replace several cooking appliances reducing the overall clutter of our countertop. Additionally, it’s possible to store things on top of the oven as long as they are relativity light but it’s important to remove anything from the top of the oven before using it to prevent possible mishaps or melting accidents.

    Control Panel And Convenience

Contemporary ovens and air fryers are smart appliances. Many state-of-the-art models have programmable settings, preloaded recipes, and one-touch selections.

NuWave ovens and air fryers have almost nothing separating their control panels, at least from the users perspective. The same can be said about air fryers of other major brands. However, convenience is a slightly different matter.

Both the NuWave oven and air fryer are convenient in terms of ease of access and use. However, an oven is more spacious, with racks and grills, which means you can air-fry different foods at the same time.

NuWave Brio is spacious enough to fry different foods, but you must be content with the base tray. The air circulation riser for the Brio improves heat transfer and facilitates better frying.

However, it doesnt serve as another rack or tray.

What Are The Two Basic Types Of Air Fryers

Top 5 Best Nuwave Air Fryer Review And Buying Guide 2017

I noticed when looking around that there are essentially two types of air fryers available. The basket-type is most common. These air fryers have a removable basket in the lower half. Food gets placed in and cooked in the basket. This type of air fryer sort of resembles a deep fryer and works best for air frying only.

If youre looking for more functionality, look into a multi-function air fryer that resembles a toaster oven and brings more options to the party. That includes rotisserie cooking, grilling, and dehydrating. They hold more food than the basket air fryers, often have preset functions or programming capability, and offer accessories galore.

The unit I tried, the NuWave Brio 14Qt Digital Air Fryer with Probe, is a multi-function air fryer and comes with 100 Presets. So, for example, if I want to make onion rings from frozen, I can. Preset #78 allows me to do that. All I have to do is place the frozen onion rings in the machine, turn it on, push the PRESET button, hold the UP ARROW until it reads 78, and then push the START/PAUSE button. The machine does the rest. It knows to air fry the onion rings for 8 minutes at 400°F. The Preset Guide recommends how much to cook at one time, 12 ounces in this case, and notes that minor adjustments may be necessary to achieve your desired results.

What Can I Cook With An Air Fryer

Having cleaned Olivia and read the manual, it was time to start cooking. Armed with no air frying skills, I started slow and chose recipes from the cookbook that came with the air fryer. First was Air-Fried Tortilla Chips, then Citrus Green Beans. The recipes had minimal ingredients and simple instructionsperfect for a beginner. For the tortilla chips, the recipe directed me to preheat the machine, set the temperature to 390°F , and cook for 4 minutes. So, I prepped the food and pressed these buttons:ON/OFFLIGHT PREHEATUP ARROW until the temperature showed 390FSTART/PAUSETIMEDOWN ARROW until the time was 4 minutes

Olivia started preheating and helpfully beeped when she reached 390°F . I opened the door, placed the lightly oiled tortillas in the unit, and closed the door. The air fryer started back up automatically and the timer started counting down from 4 minutes. After 4 minutes, the unit turned off automatically. I pulled out the tortilla chips and seasoned them. Easy! And crunchy, fresh tortilla chips, seasoned however I wanted! I was pretty surprised and pleased to find the controls for the NuWave Brio 14Qt Digital Air Fryer with Probe so user-friendly.

I moved on. I warmed up frozen prepared food and made a couple of simple from-scratch recipes . These went well, were easy, and improved our snacking game.

I have referred back to the manual and Quickstart Guide a few times and found both to be useful and full of good information. This is a new way of cooking for me.

Nuwave Bravo Xl Vs Breville Smart Oven Air

The Nuwave Bravo XL and the Breville Smart Oven Air appear at first glance to be very similar ovens, with a comparable number of accessories and functions. When it comes to the price tag, however, these machines are worlds apart.

The Breville Smart Oven Air is more than double the price of the Nuwave Bravo XL and though it’s an incredible piece of kitchen equipment, it is definitely not for everyone. While both machines have similar oven size, comparable functions, a wealth of accessories, and the ability to create incredible entrees, not everyone is willing to shell out almost this much for a countertop oven even if it is one of the best ovens I’ve ever had the opportunity to use.

The one major place where these ovens differentiate themselves is in the user interface department. The Breville Smart Oven Air has a very easy to use digital interface with selector knobs and a few function buttons, the Nuwave Bravo XL on the other hand has 1 selector knob and over 12 buttons that make it at times a bit confusing to operate.

The NuWave Bravo XL has a wealth of functions from dehydrating to roasting, fermenting, and air frying. The Breville Smart Oven Air, however, has the NuWave Bravo beat in the overall function department, with 13 individual cooking modes. While many won’t use anywhere near the full functionality of the Breville Smart Oven Air, if you are purchasing a machine at this price and feature set it’s important to know you can do as much as possible.

How Would I Improve The Nuwave Bravo Xl Air Fryer

While the NuWave Bravo XL is a well-made and versatile appliance there are definitely some improvements I would make in future models.

    • The control panel and digital display are difficult to navigate and frustrating to use. Once I got the hang of it, it became a manageable frustration, but it shouldn’t be as complicated as it is to operate overall. I loved the multiple functions and versatile, multi-stage cooking modes, but it could definitely stand a redesign in the user interface department.
    • The fan seemed underpowered. Maybe it was just the door fitting well or a well-designed fan, but compared to other air fryer models I almost felt like something might have been wrong with my model. It was whisper quiet, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, most air fryers are distinctly audible when in use, but this seemed like a flaw or a malfunction rather than an intentional product design.

What Exactly Is An Air Fryer

Dont laugh. Some of us still didnt know or understand the basic mechanics of air frying.

Air fryers are essentially mini ovens. Mini convection-like ovens, to be more exact. Theyre not deep fryers. Confession: Before I started doing my research, whenever I heard air fryer, I somehow translated that into deep fryer in my mind. And I didnt know what the air had to do with anything, but it did, and wellI wasnt really into deep-frying, so I had passed on it. I couldnt have been more wrong.

While air fryers are not true convection ovens, they operate basically the same way. An electric coil heats up inside the air fryer while a fan blows the hot air around. This allows for even heat distribution throughout the unit. At the same time, the oil on the food gets converted into a mist, coats the food, and mimics deep frying. Steam from the foods moisture helps finish the cooking process. This method of cooking uses less oil than deep frying and makes for easier cleanup.

What I Love About My Air Fryer

Im hooked on air frying. I love the convenience and I love, love, love that the NuWave Brio 14Qt Digital Air Fryer with Probe turns off when the timer reaches zero, unlike a conventional oven. It doesnt matter if Im toasting nuts, making chicken wings or reheating pizza, when the timer stops the unit stops producing heat. Its like having a mini-insurance policy that buys you a few extra minutes.

That may sound basic, but for someone like me, that means I can finally toast nuts and not worry about burning them. I just set the temperature to 300°F and adjust the timer to 3 minutes. I can watch diligently through the window while the magic happens, checking the color and smelling for just the right amount of toastiness, or I can walk away.

One thing I didnt anticipate was how much I would appreciate the extra oven spaceand its size. Having this has already come in handy when I needed to bake multiple items at different temperatures. And this will be a true luxury come holiday season.

I also intend to use the air fryer when it gets warm outside. Given its small size and that its quick to preheat, Ill be able to cook without heating up the entire kitchen.

Im still working on converting recipes from conventional to convection and figuring out how much oil to use. That, for me, is not intuitive, but each day Im getting better. I keep notes on what works and what doesnt and learn as I go.

Can I Put Vegetables In Air Fryer

Of course. You can almost cook all sorts of foods in an air fryer. However, if you want to put vegetables in an air fryer, its better to make proper and uniform slices of the vegetables. Uneven slices can result in bad cooking of the vegetables. Moreover, uneven slices means uneven heating of the vegetable portions.

But, since weve talked about making even slices of vegetables, lets talk about other food as well. If you want to cook chicken, for example, make sure you make the pieces properly. All the pieces are better to be in the same size. That way, therell be even heat distribution to all the food particles.
