Aside from the peculiar spelling of “dehydrate,” I like the cooking options on this model over cooking programs for specific foods. Brown rice and white rice dont cook the same, and chicken breasts arent the same as thighs, so Id rather set the time and temperature myself. Still, some cooks might miss the ease of pressing a single button to make stew.

Performance: Whats Not To Like

I expected the Pressure Cook function to work here as well as on other Instant Pot models Ive used, and there were no surprises. I slow-cooked soup, pressure cooked oatmeal, and steamed vegetables. This has a Sous Vide mode, so I tested its ability to hold its temperature, and it stayed steady. However, the size of the pot limits the size of food that can be cooked using Sous Vide, so it may not be large enough for every sous vide recipe. The Sous Vide mode can also be used for making yogurt or for any recipes where a steady temperature is required.

Air frying is done in the stainless steel cooking pot with or without the fryer basket. The basket reduces the cooking space but offers better airflow. The broiler/dehydrator rack that fits in the basket allows a second layer of cooking. It has two large finger holes that make it simple to place in the basket, but once the rack is hot, gloved fingers didnt fit, so I used a pair of thin tongs.

I used the Bake mode for some cookies, with three on the bottom of the fryer basket and three on the broiling/dehydrating tray. The cookies on top cooked a bit more quickly, which was expected since the heat is from the top. I removed the rack and gave the bottom cookies another two minutes. The results werent perfect, but good enough. While there are better ways to bake cookies, its good to know this can manage a few treats.

How To Clean The Instant Pot Duo Plus Air Fryer

When using the air frying function and pressure cooking greasy recipes, cleaning wont be as easy. The trick is to fill your inner pot with water and soak it overnight to loosen the food particles.

In addition, you have to be careful with the small parts when cleaning up the lid. Losing any of it means youll have to buy a new one.

So far, I never lost a single component.

When it comes to the air fryer lid, wait for it to cool down before wiping it off with a damp cloth. However, it may require deep cleaning once in a while.

Is The Instant Pot Duo Plus Air Fryer Easy To Use

Any multicooker is quite intimidating at first. Add in the fact that it comes with a separate lid for an air fryer, which will make things more complicated.

Based on my personal experience with Instapot Max, it took me a month to get comfortable cooking with it.

If you picked the Instant Pot Duo Crisp Plus Air Fryer, it has an additional safety feature.

Just like the Instapot Duo Plus, the pressure release knob is farther away from the vent.

On the other hand, if you opt for the Amazon exclusive one, it still has the classic pressure release identical to the original Instapot Duo.

Overall, multicookers do have a moderate learning curve. Thats the tradeoff of squeezing multiple functions into one kitchen appliance.

On the bright side, having a multi-cooker at home is one of my best decisions. I dont have to wait for more than an hour to tenderize my meat.

Should I Buy The Instant Pot Duo Crisp

This multicooker and air fryer is the ideal design for families and people who like cooking in large quantities. And, while it may not have some of the fanciest features found in more advanced IP products, it has everything it needs to cook a wide range of foods from meats to vegetables and everything in between.

However it’s not cheap and it’s another big appliance for your kitchen. So I will divide my answer:

1. If you already have an Instant Pot, and are not interested in buying another one, I think you should not purchase it. You can get the Mealthy CrispLid or the Instant Pot Air fryer lid instead.

2. If you don’t have an Instant Pot yet, or if you consider getting another one for any reason, the Instant Pot Duo Crisp may be a wonderful option. It would allow you to make french fries and fried chicken, and yet take a smaller space than regular Instant Pot + separate air-fryer lid.

Instant Pot Duo Crisp Vs Emeril Everyday 8

My next consideration was the Emeril Everyday Pressure Air Fryer. First of all, both multicookers have 2 removable lids that perform similarly between different functions – one for air frying and dry cooking, the other for pressure cooking and steaming. The air fryer lid on the Emeril Everyday model has a pretty strong magnet keeping it in place which some users felt was awkward to put into place and remove.

One of the main differences between these cookers is in the air fryer basket. There seems to be a number of users of the Emeril model that were dissatisfied with the basket, which is stainless steel and not well-designed. It seemed like a pretty big flaw and an oversight in the design of this package. There were a number of reviews that indicated a fryer basket had to be purchased separately, which was a source of frustration. If planning to use the air fryer function on a regular basis, I would say that this is probably not the model for you.

These two multi cookers are very comparable in price, but I would be reluctant to recommend the Emeril Everday Pressure Air Fryer over the Instant Pot Duo Crisp based largely on consumer reviews of the parts and accessories. The air fry basket alone is a major flaw, if you intend to use this machine for that particular function. The Instant Pot seems to have this beat.

How Easy Is It To Set Up

After unpacking and finding space for the Instant Pot air fryer, I knew right away that this would require some research before I was ready to start cooking. I found the Getting Started Guide to be very helpful, as I proceeded to familiarize myself with the proper setup. I definitely recommend the “Initial Test Run” that is detailed in the manual as it will take a first time user, like myself, some time to get used to the mechanisms for pressure cooking. This pretty much took me through the process of setting up the cooker with water. I learned how to set the timer and release the steam properly which was very worth the time I spent doing it.

It took me a while to acquaint myself with all of the parts. After about 30 minutes, I felt I was ready to move ahead, though I certainly continued to reference the manual through the process. Once I felt prepared, I moved into some simple air frying. I wanted to see if this function was enough to set this multicooker apart.

How Do Air Fryers Work

Air fryers are actually small convection ovens. They have a topside heating element and a motorized fan which rapidly circulates the hot air so food cooks evenly creating the same crispiness as in traditional fried foods. Because of the size of the cooking chamber and rapid air circulation, the cooking time can be effectively reduced by 20% or more when compared to other cooking methods.

Air fryers technically dont fry food at all. The heated air that contains fine oil droplets takes the moisture out of the foods. The result is similar characteristics as fried foods, with significantly lower levels of fat, since they remove high-fat and high-calorie oils from the typical cooking process.

Air-frying triggers a chemical reaction, the Maillard Reaction , the browning color and flavoring of food, like many other cooking methods.

Performance: As Good As Expected

I am familiar enough with Instant Pot pressure cookers to expect them to perform basic tasks well. Still, I pressure-cooked country pork ribs, steamed cauliflower, and sauteed potatoes, just to make sure this cooker was up to par.

When I made steel-cut oats using the pot-in-pot method, I appreciated the extra space the 8-quart pot gave me, since I could use a slightly larger container for my oats.

After basic pressure cooking was done, I started having more fun. I air-fried frozen eggrolls, estimating the temperature and cooking time based on package instructionswhile wondering when I’ll see air fry instructions on packages. The eggrolls emerged crisp and brown, with a hot interior. Frozen French fries were also successful.

I decided to try something a bit more complicated and put a whole chicken on the included rack and lowered it into the cooker. I added water and set it for pressure cooking. When the time was up, I brushed the top of the chicken with oil, attached the air fryer lid, and let it crisp the chickens skin. While the result wasnt as pretty as an oven-roasted chicken, the visible skin was crisp and brown, and the chicken was juicy throughout.
