How & Why To Preheat Your Air Fryer

Air Fryer Frozen Chicken Wings Recipe

Top: Preheating an air fryer with digital controls. These often have a preheat mode button. Bottom: For standard models, you can preheat the fryer by adjusting it to the 380 degree temperature and setting the cooking timer for 5 minutes.

Just as we do with ordinary ovens, air fryer manufacturers recommend warming up the fryer before. Why, you may ask?

Preheating an air fryer does several things:

  • The heating element is brought to a ready state
  • Interior surfaces which help cook food are heated and ready to work properly
  • Preheating removes the warming delay that would happen otherwise when cooking

Basically, this just means youre getting your air fryer ready to begin cooking right away. You wont have the cooking process slowed by having to heat up while youre cooking. Its sort of like how we let a car warm up in the wintertime before driving it.

For food thats heated properly and cooks well, youll need to let your air fryer warm up. Doing this allows your meals to cook consistently and reliably.

Even though air fryers are small and dont take a long time to warm up like traditional ovens, they still need a few minutes time before theyre ready.

Frozen Chicken Wings In Air Fryer

If you always want some wings on hand, you can make air fryer frozen chicken wings.

And what’s great about doing this is you don’t have to thaw the wings before cooking! So you can whip them up for dinner or game-day on short notice.

All you have to do is cook them for about 10 minutes at 360°F before following the process above. And if the wings are all frozen together, make sure to break them apart after – if they don’t break apart yet, cook for a few more minutes.

Now, if your wings have frozen ice on them, check your air fryer basket after pre-cooking them and pour out any water from the bottom of the basket before moving on.

Can I Double The Recipe

For all-around crispy chicken wings, its best to keep the wings in a single layer. If you have a larger air fryer like our Cuisinart model, you can double everything. When doubling, air fry for 18-22 minutes, or until the skin is crisp, flipping the wings half way. Bake time will vary based on the surface area of your air fryer basket.

How Long Should I Cook Frozen Chicken Wings

Easy Air Fryer Chicken Wings

To be very careful and get the best info, I measured cooking times for both larger and smaller air fryers. The larger model had the wings crisp & ready in 25 minutes. The smaller one, a 1.2 qt Dash personal air fryer, needed a bit more time at about 30 minutes.

I carefully checked my wings and measured cooking times for wings prepared in 2 sizes of air fryers many people will use: One more suitable for families and one for individuals .

What I found was interesting. Even though some other foods like frozen hamburger patties cook with about the same amount of time, in testing the times were slightly different for wings.

Basically what you need to know is that youll need to cook frozen wings for about 25 to 30 minutes.

Heres a timeline of what happens when making wings:

  • 0-10 mins: Thawed out, starting to warm up inside the wings
  • 10-15: Cooking more inside, outside begins to brown. At 15 minutes be sure to shake and turn them over.
  • 20 mins: Last exposed sides of wings are browning
  • 25 mins: Some air fryers will be done!
  • 30 mins: Should be enough time for others fryers to finish

What To Serve With Buffalo Chicken Wings

  • Air Fryer Broccoli. This quick-cooking air fryer side can be ready shortly after you finish up the wings. Or try oven Roasted Broccoli.

Storing Buffalo Chicken Wings

  • Refrigerating: Store leftover air fryer buffalo chicken wings in an airtight container in the refrigerator. When stored properly, they should stay fresh for 3-5 days.
  • Freezing: Freeze leftover air fryer buffalo chicken wings by placing them in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Next, place the entire baking sheet in the freezer uncovered. Once the wings are fully frozen, transfer them to a freezer-safe bag for up to 3 months.

Reheating Tip: Air fryer buffalo chicken wings are best reheated in you guessed it the air fryer! Reheat them in 3-5 minute intervals at 380°F. In between each round, give them a good flip. This should return them to their crispy, fresh-out-of-the-fryer state.

Dont Forget To Check & Shake

Shaking the wings is important for getting great results. Youll want to shake them to turn the uncooked sides over so theyll be exposed to hot cooking air. In only takes a few seconds just gently shake & stir them to move them around as needed.

Its important to remove and shake the wings after 15 minutes. Youll want to do this to turn them over and expose the uncooked sides to the hot air. If you wish, add more cooking oil spray again.

Put the wings back into the fryer and check again at 25 minutes. For some air fryers, the food will be fully cooked now.

Others may need a few more minutes. At 25 minutes cooking time, also check if you need to shake them again.

If you find that there are still some parts of the wings left uncooked, be sure to shake them again and continue cooking until 30 minutes are done.

Once cooking time is up, youre ready!

Tip: You can be confident how well food is cooked by using a digital temperature gauge with a probe to check. When the temperature inside reaches 165° and above the food should be safe to eat and nearly done . I use a nice little ThermoPro TP03A digital kitchen gauge thats very affordable and works great.

Frying the Wings in a single layer or separated by a double layer rack works best but you can make a bigger batch by taking some of the wings out before increasing the temperature and crisping them up in smaller batches. Just make sure not to overcrowd the basket so the air can still circulate. Watch the video below to see how I make a bigger batch in my smallest Air Fryer!

Air Fryer Boneless Wing Recipe

Serves 2-4

  • Salt and pepper
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Make the boneless nuggets by cutting your chicken breasts into bite sized pieces and salt and pepper the pieces.

In a small bowl scramble two eggs for your wet dip. In a separate bowl add flour, cayenne, chili pepper, and a touch of paprika to a bowl and give it a quick whisk so its properly mixed.

Dip the chicken nuggets in the egg bowl, and then using a seperate hand dip them into seasoned flour. Shake off excess batter, and place them on your air fryer tray.

Right before putting your nuggets into the airfryer, spray them olive oil spray to make your nuggets extra crispy on the outside.

Preheat your air fryer to 375 degrees fahrenheit. We cook our nuggets for 15 minutes, and as long as you dont consistently open your airfryer your batter will come out crispy with a juicy chicken center.

The most important step is taking your piping hot boneless wings from the air fryer to your mouth, so the final sauce preparation is key. While the boneless wings are in the airfryer you can prepare your buffalo sauce in a small saucepan.

Immediately toss your boneless wings in the sauce, because the longer you wait the less crispy your chicken batter will be. We see the best results by lightly tossing our chicken in the sauce with a spoon so we dont break up the batter.

Eat them fresh and hot with your favorite ranch or blue cheese dipping sauce!

How Do You Get Breading To Stick To Chicken Wings

The blend I use to make the flour mixture for these chicken wings is a combination of flour, smoked paprika, garlic powder, and salt and pepper.

The smoked paprika gives it such a great flavor paired with the garlic and makes an awesome base for added sauces later.

You can also use lemon pepper seasoning instead, or really any other dry rub that you like.

Note that if you use garlic salt and not garlic powder, adjust the salt accordingly.

Tips To Get The Crispiest Wings

How to Make Hot Wings in an Air Fryer Oven Recipe

These wings are definitely restaurant worthy. This will be your new tried and true to get your wing fix, I promise. Cooking them in the Air Fryer just makes them so easy. If you havent gotten on the Air Fryer band wagon its definitely time.

  • Wings: As mentioned above, you can buy wings in two ways. They come whole or they come trimmed or broken down into parts: The drumette and the wingette. You definitely want to cook these in their parts, not whole. The whole wings are cheaper but it takes a lot of work to break them down. Its worth paying a little bit more for the work to be already done.
  • Dry: Patting the wings dry before adding the oil and seasoning will help them get even crispier. Itll remove any excess water which can slow the cooking and cause them to steam. Theyll still get cooked but wont be as crispy. Use paper towels to pat them down, or even keep them in the fridge uncovered before seasoning to help dehydrate them.
  • Turn it up: If you desire an extra crisp almost char to your wings, turn the air fryer up 20 degrees the last 2-3 minutes of cooking.
  • Stand them Up: Line the chicken wings standing upright along the sides of the air fryer. This is a great little trick if you need to fit them all in. It doesnt affect how theyre cooked, but gets them all in. Ill admit I havent tried this tip yet, but I heard about it and cant wait to try it out the next time I make these.

Making A Large Batch Of Chicken Wings

If you’d like to make a large batch of chicken wings in the air fryer as fast as possible, the best thing to do is pre-cook 2 batches of wings in the oven while 1 batch cooks in the air fryer.

So to do this, first preheat your oven to 400°F and line two baking sheets with cooking racks.

Then add 10-12 chicken wings to each rack and cook the wings in the oven for the entire time the first batch of air fried chicken wings cook. Make sure to turn and rotate the wings every 10 minutes – or so – as the wings cook in the oven.

Once the wings are done cooking in the air fryer, add the first 10-12 chicken wings that just cooked in the oven to the air fryer and cook at 400°F for 8 minutes. Then add the next batch of 10-12 wings from the oven and cook them in the air fryer for 8 minutes.

Can I Cook Frozen Wings In The Air Fryer

Can you? Yes.

Are they as good as unfrozen wings? No.

Are they still spectacular? Yes, actually they are.

Here’s the small issue I found. To get the crispiest, fried chicken texture, you need the wings to be as dry as possible.

With frozen wings, they have so much moisture from the ice crystals, that by the time you’ve dried off the moisture, your wings are a teeny bit overcooked.

Of course, frozen wings won’t take any type of breading or dry rub at all, so there’s also that.

But one of the advantages of Air Fryer Wings is that the moisture dissipates faster than in the oven, due to the hot air circulating. So it’s not the worst thing in the world–and it’s a lot better than no chicken wings!

Sauces And Seasonings For Wings

After air frying the wings, they get tossed with your favorite sauce or seasoning. That way, everyone can customize their serving of wings. Here are a few of our favorites:

  • Buffalo Sauce: You can buy this sauce or make your own with just two ingredients
  • Teriyaki Sauce: Salty and Sweet!
  • Cajun Seasoning
  • BBQ Sauce: Add as much sauce as you like and toss the wings!
  • Old Bay Sauce: Melt 6 Tbsp unsalted butter, add 2 tsp old bay seasoning, and 2 tsp lemon juice. Toss wings in sauce and dust with more old bay seasoning.
