How Do You Make Air Fryer Cod Fish

Crispy Breaded Cod Air Fryer Recipe

PREPARE THE FISH: Preheat your air fryer. To start making your air fryer cod you will need to pull the fish out the package and pat them dry.

Set them on a cutting board and cut them to the size you want.

You can leave them whole or you can cut them into smaller sections based on if you are making tacos or sandwiches.

SET OUT BOWLS WITH THE EGG AND BREADCRUMBS: Then you will set a bowl with the egg, a bowl with flour and then a bowl with breadcrumbs on the counter in a row.

BREAD THE COD: Use a paper towel and pat the cod dry. From here take each piece of cod and dip it into the egg, then dip it into the flour then into the breadcrumbs.

COOK THE COD IN THE AIR FRYER: Place the fish in basket of air fryer and cook at 400° for 10 to 11 minutes, carefully flipping halfway through. Cook until the cod gently flakes with a fork or reaches an internal temperature of 145 degrees F.

Serve on tacos, on a bun or on its own.

Tips For Making Crispy Air Fryer Cod

BREADCRUMBS: I used panko breadcrumbs but you can easily use regular breadcrumbs in this recipe.

They help to create a crust on the outside of the cod which I really like and works nicely for tacos or eating it on a bun like you would in a fish fry.

If I am making tacos I like to add taco seasoning to the breadcrumbs. If you are doing more of a fish fry option try adding old bay seasoning or Italian seasoning.

DONT OVERCROWD: The key to a perfectly cooked piece of cod in the air fryer is to not overcrowd the fish fillets.

I like to make sure there is space between all of the pieces of cod which might mean air frying the fish in two batches. You always want to place the cod in a single layer.

STORING COD: You can keep the leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days. When reheating the fish you can use the air fryer for about 3 minutes to reheat the cod. I find cod to best the day you make it but it can be reheated!

HOW TO THAW FROZEN COD: If your cod is frozen and needs to be defrosted you can do that by doing a couple of things. First of all you can thaw it in the fridge 2 days before you need to use it.

If you are in a hurry to use the cod the other option is to place the fish in a bowl of warm water . I leave it in the water for about 20 minutes to help thaw it before using.

LEMON JUICE: I sometimes will add lemon juice to the egg mixture for a bit of acidity or you can serve your cod with lemon wedges.

Cooking Cod In A Pan On The Stove Top

Here’s how to cook cod in a pan:

Rinse the cod fillets, and pat them dry with paper towels.

Mix the paprika, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and onion granules in a bowl. Set aside.

Brush the fish with lemon juice, sprinkle the seasoning on it, flip the fillets, and season that side too.

Place a skillet on the stove top on medium heat.

Add oil into the skillet. When heated, add the fish fillets.

Cook for 2 minutes, without moving them, then flip them and cook the other side for another 2-3 minutes or till cooked.

If using herb butter, add to the skillet a minute before taking off heat.

Take the skillet off the heat.

Most people think that air frying is done completely without oil. However, you need just a little bit of oil so the machine can circulate those tiny oil droplets, which is what makes air frying create deliciously crisp and crunchy food.

So when your food isnt turning out as expected, it is usually that you arent actually adding enough oil to the recipe. How To Cook Cod In The Oven

Rinse the cod fillets and pat them dry with paper towels.

COD: This recipe uses a pound of fresh cod. I love the wild-caught cod loin or cod filets from Sitka Salmon Shares. It is light, flaky and perfect for weeknight meals like these Grilled Fish Tacos with Tropical Salsa. You can use fresh or frozen cod for this recipe and honestly any white fish would work with this recipe.

EGG:You will start by dipping the cod into the egg to coat the fish. It helps the other ingredients stick to the fish.

BREADCRUMBS:The breadcrumbs I like to use are panko breadcrumbs which helps create a nice crunchy crust on the cod. I think the panko mixture creates a crispy crust on the fish but regular breadcrumbs works too.

FLOUR: I use regular all-purpose flour when I am coating the cod.

The best way to tell if the fish is cooked through is by inserting a thermometer into the thickest part of the filet. If it reads 145 degrees, then its ready! If you do not have a thermometer to check the temperature of the fish, you can also tell that fish is done cooking when it flakes easily with a fork.

Start by preheating the air fryer to 400°F.

Combine the lemon pepper, garlic powder, parsley, paprika, and salt together in a small mixing bowl.

Pat the pieces of cod dry with a paper towel, then lightly coat both sides with olive oil spray or a little bit of oil.

Sprinkle the seasoning over the cod, then evenly rub it all over the fillets.

Lightly spray the air fryer basket with a little more olive oil, then place the fish fillets in a single layer into the basket . Place a couple thin lemon slices on top of the cod.

Cook the cod for about 10-12 minutes until the internal temperature reaches 145°F on a meat thermometer, or the fillets easily flake apart with a fork.

Heres a little bonus tip for all the fish stick lovers out there. Air fryers are awesome for cooking your favorite frozen fish sticks in a fraction of the time. Preheat the air fryer to 360 °F and cook the sticks for only 8 minutes! We have been doing this in our home for a while and we absolutely LOVE the outcome.

How To Make Tender Flaky Cod In The Air Fryer

First, combine all the spices on a small plate. Season the cod by placing each piece into the spice mixture on the plate and coating the top and bottom of the fish.

Spread a small pat of butter or butter alternative on top of each piece of fish. I use a vegan plant-based butter and it works like a charm.

It helps if the butter is room temperature and you can sort of spread/smear the pat out more evenly on top of the fish.

Place a lemon slice on top of each piece of cod and transfer to the air fryer.

For my air fryer which is the oven type, I place the cod on the trays in the air fryer. If you have a basket model air fryer, place the cod into the basket.

Air fry at 400°F for 12-15 minutes depending on the thickness of your piece of fish.

Its done when cooked through but still very moist and tender. The fish should flake apart easily as shown below.

It will almost be falling apart in sections as you remove it from the air fryer if cooked for the appropriate amount of time.

    What If My Cod Is Sticking To The Basket

    If you try to flip or move your cod in the air fryer before its completely cooked, it may stick. Wait until the cod is cooked entirely to move it in the air fryer.

    If you have issues with your air fryer basket sticking, I recommend using a parchment paper round or spray the basket with a little oil while making this recipe. They come with perforated holes so your air fryer can still circulate air appropriately but will help any sticking from occurring and will even make cleanup even easier!

    To make air fried frozen cod, start by putting the frozen cod pieces on your air fryer tray. Dont rinse the fish, it can leave it waterlogged. If you have an air fryer oven, put the tray in the top rack position.

    You want the fish to be in a single layer that is not touching. If some of the pieces are stuck together at the edges, that is OK. This first step in the air fryer will thaw them out so they can be separated.

    If youll be making the topping for fish, chop the fruit and mix everything together while the fish air fries. Keep your strawberry kiwi salsa in the fridge until serving time.

    Tips For Cooking Air Fryer Fish

    • Season your fish generously with salt and pepper. Since you wont be actually frying your fish, you will need to make sure that it is well-seasoned. In traditional frying, a lot of flavor comes from the immense amount of oil used to cook it. Since you are skipping the fat, dont skip the flavor!
    • In order to make sure your fish comes out moist, put a pat of butter on top of each filet.
    • If you can, air fry the cod with its skin on. Air frying fish with the skin on locks the flavors and moisture inside the fish. Dont like skin? Dont worry! When your fish air fries, the skin will stick to the bottom of the air fryer and you can easily pull off the skinless filet. If you are a fan of the skin, use a spatula to remove the filet.
    • If the bottom of your fish filet loses its crisp, flip it over and cook it for 1 more minute. Be careful not to cook it for too much longer! You dont want it to lose its crispiness and juiciness.

  • Lay the cod fillets out on a sheet of parchment or on a plate. Pat dry.
  • Drizzle the cod with olive oil.

  • Place the cod in the preheated air fryer.

    Clean and pat dry the sliced cod. Next, preheat the air fryer to 360°F.

    How Do You Cook Frozen Cod So Its Not Rubbery

    Temperature is the key to making sure your frozen cod doesnt turn out rubbery or chewy. No matter how you cook it, be sure that your cod reaches an internal temperature of 145F as measured by a food thermometer. At this temperature, its flesh will be opaque white and flake easily when pressed with a fork. Overcooking cod will make it tough and dry since more moisture evaporates from the fish as its internal temperature rises.

    How long to cook frozen cod in air fryer? What temp to make frozen cod in an air fryer? Air fry frozen cod for 4 minutes at 350F . Then air fry for an additional 14-15 minutes at 375F , flipping halfway through cooking time.

    Were cooking our cod at a lower temperature and for a longer time than we did with air fryer frozen salmon. We need to be extra careful with our cod because it can dry out and become overcooked fast.

    Were starting the fish at 350F to thaw it a little and make it easier for oil to stick. Then flip them, and brush the tops of the fillets with ½ tablespoon of oil. Air fry for 7 minutes at 375F .

    Flip the fillets once more and brush the tops of the cod pieces with the last ½ tablespoon of oil. Air fry for 7-8 more minutes at 375F .

    Check the cod with a meat thermometer to ensure it reached a safe temp of 145F . Add cooking time if needed. Sprinkle the fish with some salt and pepper, if you wish.

    To serve, plate the cooked cod and top with the fruit salsa. YUM!
