How To Choose An Air Fryer | Picking The Right Air Fryer For You

Like anything else, you can pay a whole lot for an air fryer but in our experience, the most expensive air fryers aren’t necessarily the best. A basic air fryer is actually not a terribly complex machine so you really needn’t break the bank. Small no-frills air fryer models start at $25 or $30 and I’ve found they will do a serviceable job. That said, if you bump up another $30 or $40 you’re going to get a better build, sharper look and generally a bit more power too.

At the high end are the hybrid countertop ovens with air fry functions. These can go as high as $300 but you can get less advanced models from bargain brands or ones that are on sale for around $150.

How To Choose The Best Air Fryer

Air fryers differ in size and versatility, so it’s worth considering the following while you do your research.

  • What would you like to cook in it?
  • How many people are you cooking for?
  • How much space do you have?
  • What is your budget?
  • Do you have a specific requirement for ease-of-use? For example, large, clear function icons and controls, or perhaps an audible indicator for when each function has finished?

If it’s simply a healthier, more efficient method of cooking chips that you’re after, you can narrow your search down to one without bells and whistles, and save some pennies on a machine that does the core function well.

Top tip: Watch out for those that will require you to part-boil the cut potatoes prior to crisping â air fryers worth having should be able to fully cook chips on their own.

Solo Air Fryer: Best For Most People

The most basic of air fryers looks like a small robot. They are generally just a cylindrical base with a basket to hold the food that pulls in and out. These come as small as two quarts and can be as big as six or seven. These models come with digital controls or manual dials. There are also air fryers with dual compartments so you can make two types of food at different temps simultaneously. Ninja makes a particularly good one with two 4-quart cooking baskets .

Solo air fryers are the least expensive too, and they can be had for as little as $30. I’d say if you just want to try air frying but don’t want to commit a lot of money or kitchen space, opt for one of these.

Ninja’s basic air fryer oven is one of the best we’ve tested.

How Do You Clean An Air Fryer

Start with unplugging the air fryer and letting it cool completely. Remove the basket, tray, and pan, and wash them with soap and warm water.

You may also place them in the dishwasher, although make sure to check the manufacturers instructions on whether or not these parts for your specific model are dishwasher-safe.

Clean the main unit of the air fryer using a damp cloth and wipe it to remove any grease or food splatters. Never immerse it in water.

For food stuck on the heating coil, use a soft brush to clean it. Once all that is done, towel-dry or air-dry the parts that you washed before reassembling them.

How Does A Convection Toaster Oven Work

Often confused with standard toaster ovens, convection ovens operate slightly differently, as they incorporate a fan to speed up cooking time. Regular toaster ovens have a heating element but no fan.

A convection oven blows air over and around the food, then vents it out. The air movement cooks food quickly and evenly but also browns better because moisture can escape the oven with the air. Convection ovens are energy-efficient because they cook faster at a lower temperature. The best convection toaster ovens contain a rack with a small sheet pan and allow you to control the temperature and the time.

In a convection oven, the fan circulates hot air to help food cook evenly and crisp up. However, ingredients wont get as crispy as they can in air fryers unless you buy a separate crisper tray to mimic air frying. In part, thats because excess oil and fat drips onto the perforated trays and away from your food.

Convection ovens do cook food faster than a traditional oven and allow for browning to take place. The major difference between a convection toaster oven and an air fryer is that the convection ovens fan is located in the back of the oven., while heating elements line the top and bottom.

What Is The Best Air Fryer

Unfortunately, there is not one air fryer I can recommend here. You want to consider the above criteria to pick the right air fryer for your family’s needs.

That said, I have used Philips air fryer, instant vortex air fryer, cuisinart air fryer toaster oven, mealthy crisplid that sits on top of the instant pot and the Cosori air fryer.

Of all these, Cosori has been my favorite.

The second best was the instant vortex air fryer. The only thing that I did not like about this one is that sometimes when turning the basket to transfer the food, the tray would fall out.

Of course, I like the larger cooking surface area of the square basket, along with all the ease of use features I mentioned above. It has the high temperature up to 400F, presets, and the non-stick basket that is easy to clean.

I hope you found the details helpful and are able to get the best air fryer for your needs. If you have any additional questions, please leave them in comment below and I will be sure to answer them!

Can You Put Baking Paper And Foil In An Air Fryer

Always check the manufacturer’s instructions before using baking paper or foil in your air fryer. While it is possible, you need to be careful with it and consider the effect it can have on the end cooking result. Some manufacturers recommend against using baking paper or foil because by covering the bottom of the basket you could disrupt and reduce airflow, and in turn affect cooking performance.

If the manufacturer’s instructions allow it, lining the bottom of your basket with baking paper can be great if you’re cooking sticky and greasy foods that would otherwise stick to the basket, like marinated chicken wings. Not only does the baking paper act as a non-stick surface but it can also mean less mess to clean up when cooking is finished .

Do not use baking paper or foil during pre-heat because the air fryer is circulating hot air, the baking paper or foil could potentially fly up into the heating element and burn. Only use it once it’s weighted down by the food you’re cooking.

How Did We Choose The Best Air Fryer

When testing, Homes & Gardens took into account the following factors:

Noise: The noise of an air fryer can impact your ability to use it. Perhaps you like to cook while listening to the TV, or you live in a smaller home and the noise of an air fryer running would distract you as you work. If an air fryer is noisy, we make a note of it.

Speed: Air fryers promise to speed up cooking times, so when testing them we used standardized recipes to see how long they will take to cook classic recipes. While potato fries would typically take around 25 minutes in the air fryer, the speediest air fryers we tested have taken as little as 12 minutes to make crisp, evenly-cooked fries.

Looks: Its going in your kitchen counters, so it has to look the part. You might not mind a less attractive air fryer as much as some other users, but any bulky features or unattractive elements such as smudging or busy display panels were noted during testing.

Cleaning: Cleaning an air fryer should be easy. Most have baskets that can go in the dishwasher, and its rare to find on without a non-stick inside. If we ran into any difficulties cleaning, we marked it down.

Some of the air fryers in our guide have been reviewed on other Future Homes websites, but they have all been reviewed by the same Editor, meaning she can still bring you all her inside knowledge even if you cant click through to read the full review on Homes & Gardens.

Different Types Of Air Fryer

There are two main types of air fryer mechanic and electronic. Both of them have the same cooking result, but their possibilities are different.

Mechanical air fryers have two switches. One regulates the cooking time and the other sets the temperature. There is only one fan speed. These devices are simple and reliable. They have an acceptable cost.

Air fryer with electronic control is more expensive. Because they are smart. When pulling the basket out of the unit, the device automatically turns off. As soon as you insert the basket back, the display lights up and the air fryer is ready for use. There are up to ten automatic programs in the menu with selected temperature and cooking time.

Capacity of an air fryer pot is a reasonable question from the category which one to buy? There are capacities of 10 liters and less, and 11-18 liters. The larger the capacity, the more food you can cook at a time. But here you should approach the choice wisely:

  • For a small family, a large device is expensive. It uses a lot of electricity
  • Bulky basket is uncomfortable to wash, and its easy to drop it from your hands.

How Big Should An Air Fryer Be About A Quart Per Person But Bigger Isnt Always Better

If youre cooking for one or two people a 2- or 3-quart air fryer should be large enough. From there, I would suggest adding a quart of capacity for every person that youre regularly cooking for. So, if you plan to air fry for five people on a regular basis, spring for a 5-quart model.

Size matters when it comes to air fryer prowess but maybe not in the way you expected. A smaller air fryer means food is going to get blasted faster and more often than inside a larger model where the air has further to travel and more time to lose heat. Ive found that small and powerful air fryers including the Magic Bullet 2-5-quart model and Instant Pots Duo Crisp work exceptionally well and very quickly.

The smaller air fryers mean less overall capacity so you may have to cook in batches.

I find that smaller air fryers like Magic Bullets 2-5-quart model do an excellent job but the trade-off is less cooking space.

Using medium chicken thighs as a unit measurement, a 2.5-quart air fryer can fit three thighs. A 5-quart model will comfortably fit six thighs and so on. If you spring for a hybrid oven with multiple racks, you can cook as many as 10 or 12 chicken thighs at once, but it will take longer than with a smaller air fryer

Are Air Fryers Worth It

If you’re wanting to change your eating habits for the better, an air fryer can help make it happen. It cooks meals quickly and with less oil – or none at all – simply by circulating hot air around the foods and drying surface-level moisture to form a tasty crisp. For couples it’s perfect, but families who need to cook more food may go hungry if they want to solely rely on an air fryer to sort meal times.

By circulating that hot air around the food, you can make foods you would have previously fried such as chips in a healthier way – plus, you can even roast a joint of meat or even bake a cake in an air fryer. There aren’t many things which it can’t cook. We’ve found that you can grill cheese in air fryer, for example. Yep.

There are, of course, considerations to be taken into account such as the thickness of bread and type of cheese, but the trick is to nail the method and the settings of the air fryer – we found, anyway. There are plenty of other neat tips and tricks that team TechRadar have learned since we started working with air fryers.

Other recipes you could try include cooking ice cream and perfecting a crunchy skin when cooking pork belly every time.

Aside from cooking various snacks and meals, an air fryer could also save up to 50% on your energy bill when compared to a conventional oven. It can do this because it simply uses less power than an oven, and it can cook food faster.

Things To Consider When Buying An Air Fryer

Best Air Fryer 2022: Cheap vs Expensive!

When choosing an air fryer, size is an important consideration. Some air fryers are small enough to fit on a countertop, while others are larger and require storage space. Air fryers can also come in multiple sizes: mini, medium, large and jumbo. If you have limited counter space or want your new appliance to be mostly out of sight, then a mini or medium-sized model might be best for you. On the other hand, if you have plenty of room in your kitchen or want something that will cook more food at once without having to use two separate appliances, then you may want to consider getting a large or jumbo-sized model instead. The next major thing to think about when buying an air fryer is what kind of cooking process you’re looking for. As mentioned earlier, there are two types of cooking processes that each offer their own benefits: convection and infrared. Convection cooking uses hot air circulated by a fan to cook food quickly with less oil than infrared models need. Infrared models, on the other hand, utilize ceramic heating elements which provide even heat across the entire pan surface but take longer than convection models do.
