Why Did My Ground Beef Turn Brown In The Freezer

When ground beef is not exposed to oxygen, the myoglobin turns grayish-brown after a few days. It may look less appetizing but is safe. If the ground meat is gray or brown throughout, however, that usually indicates that it has been in the package for a while and may be spoiling. Meat can also turn gray in the freezer.

How Many Burger Patties Can I Cook In The Air Fryer

Depending on the size of your air fryer basket and the circumference of the patties, you may only be able to fit just 1 at a time in the basket, especially if you are using a small-sized air fryer.

I use Cosori 5.5L XL air fryer and I was able to fit four quarter pounders in the basket. The shape of Cosori air fryer basket is square. If your air fryer is circular in shape then I reckon 2 to 3 at a time. You can cook in batches if need be.

Regardless of what you do, avoid stacking the patties when cooking.

Placing Patties In Your Fryer Properly

Diagram showing how to place frozen patties in your air fryer for best results. Its ok if the patties overlap a tiny bit. However, as little as possible is best. Thats because the patties need unblocked access to the hot air inside to cook properly. If a patty is covered too much it cant brown properly, wont taste as good, and wont reach the right cooking temperature. For smaller air fryers, it may be possible to fit more than 1 inside in some cases.

What you need to know about frozen hamburger patties is that when it comes to air fryers youre going to have to make compromises. Space is tight and that means you cant cook as many frozen patties as you could on a grill or in an oven.

Because of that, you might be tempted to stack them on top of each other to fit more inside. Dont!

Frozen patties should be placed inside your air fryer with as little overlap as possible to cook properly. Thats because when covered they wont get enough exposure to the hot cooking air thats circulating.

If you must try to squeeze several inside, try to keep them spread out as much as possible. For nice, well-done and browned hamburgers its a must!

By the way, browned patties simply taste better than those that arent.

Ive tested several ways of fitting patties in the smaller air fryer, but its hard to get results when trying to do that. My advice would be to cook 1 at a time in a smaller model.

Anything Else To Consider

As you can see from my grainy photos above, my sausages got an excellent crispy skin on them. No need to spray oil on them like you might for some other food types in an air fryer.

Growing up pan frying sausages, I was always taught to prick them with a fork to make sure they dont explode. Clearly, with frozen sausages, it is not possible to prick them in this way. However, both sausages I air fried didnt explode and were still perfectly formed. So this doesnt seem to be a problem.

A pack of frozen sausages may be hard to separate. I had to bang mine hard on the counter to do this . I imagine a lot of people will simply put the whole pack in the air fryer in one go. The problem with this is that the air flow wont be the same around the sausages, and you are trying to cook a much bigger solid lump. If you do this, be sure to raise your cooking times.

All in all, I am super impressed with my air fryer again, In twelve minutes I can get perfectly cooked sausages from frozen, just a little over the time they would take unfrozen under a grill. The air fryer really is a convenient little beast of a machine

What Type Of Beef/meat To Use

Frozen Hash Browns in Air Fryer (Patties)

This recipe will work with either beef or turkey patties. I prefer ground beef. When making frozen burgers I also prefer the pre-made patties that you can purchase frozen. Igrab mine here from Butcher Box because the beef is grass-fed and grass-finished.

A lot of times when you buy pre-made frozen burgers they come stuck together. If you fully defrost them, it can be hard to break them apart without the burgers falling apart. Thats another reason to cook them while frozen and in your air fryer!

I like to grab two patties that are still stuck together. Toss them in the air fryer and after a few minutes they are easy to pull apart.

How Long Does It Take To Cook Frozen Beef Patties In The Air Fryer

The time it takes to cook frozen hamburgers in the air fryer is going to depend on how you like your burger cooked. The internal temperature youre trying to reach will be different if you want your burger rare, medium, or well done.

The chart below is a useful guideline however, I ALWAYS recommend using an instant meat thermometer, like this Kizen Thermometer I use, to check the internal temperature of your burgers before eating them! The actual timing can vary based on your air fryer, the size of the patties, etc.

  • Rare : approximately 13 minutes
  • Medium Rare : approximately 14 to 16 minutes
  • Medium : approximately 15 to 17 minutes
  • Medium Well : approximately 16 to 18 minutes
  • Well Done : approximately 17 to 20 minutes

Top Tips For Frozen Burgers In Air Fryer

As mentioned, the cook time for a burger patty will vary depending on the thickness of the meat.

If youre using 160°F as the ideal temperature, check to see if its cooked by checking at its thickest point with an instant-read meat thermometer. Im saying this twice because its important!

Air fryers vary, so its also good to check your burger patties early and make sure they dont overcook. If you have thick patties on hand then just add more time for cooking them fully before eating.

For those who prefer well-done meat, cook a little longer. On the other hand, reduce the time for a little pink in the middle.
