Joule App Capabilities And Pratfalls

Jaime Carrillo/Futurism

Many kitchen appliance smartphone apps are afterthoughts, a cynical selling point which usually don’t amount to much more than heartache. I went in with hope, considering this is the second device bearing the name Joule. The Joule Sous Vide app is what makes that immersion cooker so perfect, with built-in recipes, guided videos, and alerts to keep you connected with your food every step of the cooking process. The Joule Oven app works similarly, complete with a bounty of recipes. Every recipe listed includes cooking time, serving size, and a visual parts list, which automatically makes it one of the best cooking apps available. After surfing through the available recipes, I had to try one that took advantage of Breville Joule Oven Air-Fryer Pros smart capabilities: Set-It-and-Forget-It Rotisserie-Style Chicken.

It was interesting watching the Joule Oven cook. Harnessing highs and lows of temperature, it more or less mimicked the way a rotisserie works. Yes, it took five hours, but the results spoke for themselves. After a quick temping of the dark meat, I let the bird rest for fifteen minutes. Then, despite having already eaten dinner, my partner and I devoured half the bird over the counter it was resting on. It was perfectly cooked, even though it required cumbersome string and the equivalent run time of one-and-a-half The Godfather films to cook.

How It Stacks Up

The Joule Oven is Brevilles first attempt at making a truly connected Smart Oven, with features targeted more toward the home cook who wants to learn to cook more sophisticated meals but needs the extra guidance that recipe testing and app control bring to the table. And it does deliver for this type of cook.

We do think that it may disappoint those looking for more advanced functions or customizability. The Joule Oven lacks the steam and sous vide combi oven features and temperature probe-based functions that some of its smart oven rivals offer, limiting its usefulness for true precision cooking, which was surprising, given the Joule brands history in sous vide precision cooking.

Still, we are hopeful Breville will iterate on the idea and add functionality in subsequent Joule ovens. But for now wed recommend this one mostly to beginners wanting a tool that amounts to a built-in cooking instructor.

A Few Other Fabulous Features

Jaime Carrillo/Futurism

Ive used a handful of other countertop ovens and as flashy as they are, there are some things that are often overlooked. No appliance, no matter how smart, is worth using if its difficult to clean and maintain. Anytime I cook chicken thighs, bacon, or other splattery foods, I let the oven cool down completely, and wipe it down with a towel barely wet with all-purpose surface cleaner. The non-stick interior is a godsend, and theres a good chance I wont ever have to break out the Easy Off to keep the Breville Joule Oven Air-Fryer Pro pristine. Unlike similarly-sized ovens, the door is incredibly easy to clean as well. I took a lot of joy watching food as it cooked to perfection. And the incredibly bright oven light makes everything made in the oven camera-ready, in case you want to flex on the haters for your Instagram.

Other ovens in Joules class cynically make you buy extra accessories to take advantage of all features. Breville Joule Oven Air-Fryer Pro comes with two oven racks, an air-fryer basket, a non-stick pizza pan, and even a broiler pan complete with rack, everything you need to put this machine through the ringer. And because the inside of the oven is so spacious, it can fit oven-ready cookware you already own. My four-quart Staub enamel dutch oven fits with room to spare on all sides, even with its lid.

How To Clean The Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer

the Smart Oven® Air Fryer Pro Breville

Both the interior and exterior of the oven can be wiped down with a damp cloth. Unfortunately, none of the included accessories are dishwasher-safe, so they’ll all need to be hand-washed. While the wire rack, broiling rack, and pizza pan are easy to wipe down, the air fry basket and roasting pan required more effort to get clean post-use.

It’s best to follow the recommendation of using the broiling rack nestled into the roasting pan when cooking any foods that might release oil or grease, as that will result in an easier clean up process. During testing, reheating fried chicken in the dedicated air fry basket resulted in oil dripping down to the heating elements and the crumb tray, which was difficult to clean.

Cooking In The Joule Oven Air Fryer Pro

Despite the oven not allowing the wireless functions I would like, I did make a few meals from the available recipes in the Breville app. I wanted to get a feel for the experience the company envisioned by relying on the oven to guide me.

I started out easy with some air-fried apple chips. The app showed me how to cut the apples, season the pieces with cinnamon sugar, and lay them on the pan. It then cooked the apple slices at their preferred temperature and told me when to flip them over. And then, with little fanfare, they were done.

It’s not that the connected oven isn’t useful, but its usefulness is kept minimal by design. I’m not a cook in any sense, but I could have glanced at a website and then made apple chips without an internet-connected oven. It was painfully easy.

At the time of writing, there are only 116 recipes in the app to choose from. When you separate that number out into different categories such as snacks, entrees, desserts, beef, chicken and so on, the choices look sparse. It also assumes you’ll have the necessary ingredients to make most of those recipes. I didn’t.

I would also love to be able to do things wirelessly from the applike change the function or the amount of time the oven is cooking, or raise or lower the temperature.

From the decrease in temperatures to the continued spread of Covid-19, many of us are opting to dine out less and stay in to cook more. Home cooks have been steadily increasing the popularity of air fryers, Instant Pots and other slow cookers, devices that can make getting dinner on the table easier after a day of working from home.

Another multitasking machine is the smart oven. These countertop convection oven lookalikes are deemed smart ovens for having been outfitted with multiple cooking modes: air fry, bake, broil and rotisserie cooking among them. Theyre designed to handle the logistics of temperature changes and airflow for you so you can pop raw food in and sit back until its ready.

Testing The Joule Oven Pro

The Breville Joule Oven app has streamlined the recipe-following process so much, I think every cooking app should follow in its footsteps. Each recipe shows a full breakdown of ingredients, equipment needed, cooking plan, and instructions broken down into steps.

I made a few recipes in the Joule Oven during testing, but we’ll use this New York Times Cooking recipe for chicken thighs with garlicky cucumber yogurt as our main example. When I started the recipe, I was able to preheat the oven from my app before getting a look at all the steps.

Each step can be clicked on and expanded to show an instructional video that gives you a better picture of what you’re supposed to be doing . The app gives you a good idea of exactly what’s happening to your food through the cooking process, in the form of pop-ups and phone notifications.

In all, the prep took me even less time than the recipe said it would. Not only was each step easy to follow, the app also gave me efficient instructions, so I was able to multitask. While the chicken was cooking, I made the yogurt sauce, and when that was done, I just relaxed until everything was cooked.

I was genuinely surprised at how accurate the cooking times were for each recipe in the Joule Oven app. Even when cooking meat, the temperature and cooking times were always exactly correct, and I never once had over or undercooked food.

Breville Joule Oven Air Fryer Pro: Super Smart App

The Smart Oven® Air Fryer Pro | Dehydrate setting | Breville USA

Im not usually a fan of apps for small appliances, mainly because they really dont add to the experience. But if all smart home apps were like the Joule Oven app, Id be a convert. In addition to featuring tons of tasty recipes from the Breville test kitchen, famous chefs, New York Times Cooking, Americas Test Kitchen, Williams Sonoma, Serious Eats, and more, it actually connects with the oven to aid in cooking. When you need to step in and rotate a pan, you get an alert on your phone. The timer on the oven will pause while you make the rotation. Youd think all apps would work so seamlessly, but no.

The recipes are straightforward and include a list of ingredients, total time, active time, serving amount, and skill level. Each step has a corresponding video, so if a cooking or baking term is new, the app demonstrates it for you. As you work through the recipe, when its time to cook or set a timer, the app tells you that, too. It even includes the rack to use in the oven. My favorite app feature is that your phone screen stays on when youre making a recipe. You will never need to use your sticky fingers to enter your phones passcode to return to the recipe.

I used the app recipes to make a ton of meals, and everything came out pretty well and nothing was burned or undercooked.

What About The Cheaper Air Fryers And The Cuisinart Smart Air Oven

I am an appliance snob and frankly do not like the idea of things breaking down on me so I will invest in leaders who are dominant in their category. Like the guys at Phillips, they have been doing what theyre doing for a long time. Brevilles smart oven is smart because it packs in a bunch of extra features like dehydration and proofing temperatures! Theres also cuisinarts contender which will do the basic baking and air frying. But if you look closely at the specs youll know why. Its a mini 0.6 cubic feet compared to Brevilles 1.0 cubic feet. That means you wont be able to bake a 12-pan muffin tray or 1/4 sheet casserole in it. Makes a huge difference if you want an oven that actually acts like a primary oven.

  • 4 Comparison of Breville BOV900BSS and BOV845BSS
  • Brevilles smart ovens are highly popular due to their impressive cooking speeds and precision. So how could you even start comparing two different models from the same series? You take it step by step, weigh each feature against each other, and see which of these two beasts best fits your needs, kitchen, and budget.

Luckily, the Smart Oven Air and Smart Oven Pro have some clear differences in terms of functionality and pricing. These are the features that should make your decision a lot easier.

Both ovens are from Brevilles Smart Oven line. This means that they were both designed around two important technologies: convection technology and the Element IQ technology.

What does convection technology do? It facilitates hot air distribution in the oven through an inbuilt fan. This helps cook food evenly but also faster due to the smart air distribution and minimal heat loss.

The Element IQ technology ensures that the cooking elements are always heated to the appropriate temperature for the selected cooking mode. Together with the superior air distribution, this also ensures optimum and even heat distribution no matter the amount of food youre cooking.

The Breville Joule Oven Air Fryer Pro Needs To Be Smarter

Tyler Hayes Tech & ScienceLgCookingSmart home

Breville has had a multifunction countertop oven around in some form for years. I’ve had one in my home for at least three. Because of its vast, 13 different cooking functions, including Toast, Air Fry and Broil, it has become my family’s de facto oven. I couldn’t have been more excited by the prospect of the new Breville Joule Oven Air Fryer Proessentially the same countertop oven, but with Wi-Fi and a connected app experience.

After setting up the Joule Over Air Fryer Pro, and navigating the app, it became clear that this oven was not what I was expecting. Based on the oven’s advertisements, it looks like it’s simply a connected appliance. But that’s not the case.

In short, you can only perform its curated recipes wirelessly. You can’t set the temperature or cook function through the app. Want to preheat the oven from upstairs before you head down and put the food in? That’s not possible. Even worse, once you select a recipe, you still need to press the physical Start button on the oven itself for it to begin.

There are only a few things more disappointing than having something technologically capable but its being artificially limited. In this case, it’s likely bound by an overabundance of safety concerns. Other appliances allow more app-based controls, however. Samsung, June, Brava, LG and others all allow app-based heating. There are ways to allow the functionality in a way that’s also safe.

    Air Fryer Vs Nuwave Oven

the Smart Oven® Air Fryer Pro Breville

The difference between the air dryer and Nuwave oven is actually pretty simple. It is about the type and the temperature used for cooking. They both cook your food fast, both are easy to use and clean. The air fryer and the Nuwave oven are modern, faster and have the modern state of eco-friendly. Nuwave oven is one of those products that made cooking easier. It prepares your food fast and it doesnt harm the food nutrients. You can cook straight away by avoiding many preparations.

The Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro is a large rectangular countertop oven, measuring 21.5 x 16 x 12.7 inches. Its finished with brushed stainless steel and features a drop down door with a towel bar handle.

It has a sophisticated LCD display thats controlled by buttons and dials. Weighing 38.9 pounds, it’s the heaviest toaster oven weve had on test, however its finished so nicely that you would want to keep this on display.

Final Thoughts On The Breville Joule Oven Air

The second, in what I hope eventually becomes a long line of kitchen appliances bearing the name Joule, is a resounding success. This oven is large enough to compete with your main oven, and is a good bit smarter too. After almost three weeks of intense use, Ive started using my main oven to store extra pots and pans. Its lows are gentle enough to proof bread and dehydrate fruit, and its highs are enough to dish out surprisingly good pizza. While its great alone, pairing it with the Joule Oven App unlocks serious precision potential, and with guided video instructions, you may even pick up a few skills along the way. Those looking for a countertop oven with serious potential, look no further than Breville Joule Oven Air-Fryer Pro.

Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro Review: Ease Of Use And Cleaning

The Breville has an LCD display that is controlled by two buttons and two dials. On the panel, in addition to settings for air frying, toasting, baking and broiling, there are also settings for slow cooking, dehydrating, proofing and reheating among others. With a little trial and error, you can easily figure out how to program the oven. Included with the oven are an oven rack, air fryer basket, broiling rack, enamel roasting pan, 12-inch nonstick pizza pan and a crumb tray. On the oven door, it tells you which rack positions to use for various cooking functions.

While its cooking, some surfaces of the Breville get excessively hot. The stainless steel top of the oven reached 196°F and the glass door reached 252°F, temps hot enough to cause a burn. On the positive side, the handle and the controls remain cool to the touch. As it operates, the Breville has a dBA reading of 61.4, which is just above the average for air fryers.

The Breville has some nice extras. Theres an interior oven light that makes it convenient to check on your food as it cooks. You also have the option of changing the volume of the buzzer, so you can lower it if you find it too loud and increase it if you want to hear it from another room. When you use the middle rack positions, the rack will automatically pop out to give you easy access to your food. Like all Breville appliances, this product has a cord plug with a loop to make it easy to pull the cord out of a wall socket.
