What We Didnt Like About The Joule Oven
The Joule Ovens smarts are fairly limited. Most significantly, the companion app doesnt allow you to create your own recipes you can create favorites within the app, but you cant share these with others either directly or on social media . While we understand that Breville and ChefSteps are trying to deliver a tested experience for novice cooks, we found the apps lack of basic functionality frustrating, missing recipe creation and customization, recipe sharing and cooking histories.
You can connect your device to Alexa or Google Assistant, but the functionality is minimal, such as asking for status updates and basic manual control, e.g., Set the oven to bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.
Given all of this, as seasoned cooks, we found ourselves skipping the app altogether and reaching for the manual controls instead meaning experienced buyers might want to save some money and just opt for the $399.95 Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro instead.
We didnt feel the additional functions offered enough usability. The air fryer in particular wasnt nearly as effective in our tests as a dedicated air fryer .
As a toaster, the Joule isnt anywhere near as good as a smaller toaster oven or a dedicated toaster. To get any browning on your toast, we had to set the toast setting to level 7 , even if you are only toasting one slice of homemade sourdough. And even then sometimes we needed A Bit More to finish the job.

I use my Breville every night for dinner and sometimes for lunch too. You can see what I like to cook in my oven below. You can toast, roast, air fry, bake, warm and slow cook. There are more, but they seem repetitive to me. It can be used in the convection mode and the non-convection mode. It can also measure in Fahrenheit and Celcius.

I have been using my Smart Oven Air Fryer for over 7 months. I use it exclusively. The only time I used my regular gas oven was to bake a large dish. The Smart Oven heats up to the desired temp quickly. Easy to use. Easy to clean. I chose this appliance for the air fryer feature. It is nice to have only one large appliance on the counter that will do all the baking/cooking tasks I need.

How To Adjust Air
You dont need to seek out air-fryer recipes to get great results in a convection toaster ovenany recipe written for a standard oven works. However, if you have your eye on a recipe written specifically for an air fryer but want to prepare it in a convection toaster oven, you have to make some minor adjustments for the best results.
Generally, if youre following an air-fryer recipe but plan to cook it in a convection toaster oven, you need to increase the cooking time and temperature to compensate for the toaster ovens larger cavity. You dont need to buy an air-frying basketa regular quarter-sheet pan will give you similar air-frying results in a convection oven . Here are some tips for cooking some common dishes in a convection toaster oven.

What To Look For In A Hybrid Toaster And Air Fryer Oven
Since you’re potentially going all-in on one machine, there are a few functions you want it to perform and perform well. For the purposes of this list, I took four main cooking functions into account: Air fry, broil, bake and toast. These, along with roast, are the oven duties the average home cook will rely on most. While some of these cookers sport dehydrate, proof, pizza and other niche cooking functions, most didn’t, so I stuck to testing functions that were possible across all the hybrid ovens.
Air frying: This trendy term has nothing to do with frying but rather mimics the results of deep-frying using super hot, fast-moving convection air for food that’s crispy outside and moist inside. Having an air fry function was the baseline criteria for consideration on this list. You can air fry lots of things, but chicken wings and french fries are two popular options, so I employed them for testing.
Broiling: I’m a big broiler person, especially for fish but also for things like mac and cheese, certain chicken recipes and anything else I want a crispy crust on top of. I find that ovens differ wildly in broiling ability so I wanted to see which of these ovens did it best.
Baking: Baking can mean a lot of things but when it comes to, let’s say cookies and cupcakes, consistency is key. The sign of an oven that bakes well is simple: Will it hit the temperature you set it to and then stay there consistently throughout the bake?

Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro Review: Cooking Performance
In our tests, the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro scored well for cooking Brussels sprouts, breaded chicken and frozen and fresh French fries. It struggled a little when frying chicken wings, but results werent bad. It also scored full marks for roasting a chicken and close to full marks for broiling burgers. When it came to baking, its performance was impressive as it turned out a perfect cake and cookies. In addition, it did a nice job of heating a frozen pizza. The main area it fell down in was toast, which was very uneven.
For many functions, including air fry, the Breville immediately goes into a preheat mode. Once preheating is finished, you need to be ready to put your food in as the timer automatically begins to countdown on the main setting. It will however not count down when the door is open, so as long as you do this you have time. If you want to add more time after cooking is complete, you will need to deactivate the preheat to skip this step. For some modes, including air fry, you can set the oven to remind you to turn the food by flashing Rotate Remind on its display and making an audible noise.
Food air fries in the provided shallow rectangular basket the manufacturer recommends arranging it in one layer. There are no presets for air fried foods, but you can adjust the time and temperature, select a frozen setting and change the speed of the convection fan.
Amazing Toast And Bagels
OK, first of all, you can absolutely give away your toaster. The Toast setting makes toast exactly how everyone wants itbarely golden for the pickiest kids to a very dark brown. We use it for sliced bread, English muffins, and reheating waffles.
The Bagel setting works great as well and only browns the top.

Has Big Counter Space Requirements
To work properly, there needs to be at least 4-inches of space on both sides and 6-inches above the Smart Oven. They also do not recommend having it come right to the edge of the countertop.
Plus, you CANNOT set anything on top of the oven unless you use the bamboo tray. I am a HUGE fan of the bamboo tray, but it would be tricky to fit pans on top with low cabinets.

I bought mine from Williams Sonoma. I used to work there when I was in college and they have great customer service. Amazon is convenient, but not when it comes to addressing problems. When it comes to appliances I dont want to deal with a company that ONLY operates online, call me old fashioned, but its true.
